The Lash Diaries: Mon shu! Karl Lagerfeld for Shu Uemura eyelash curler

I have always wanted a Shu Uemura eyelash curler as they are the cult favourite tool for eyelash curling. When I heard that Chanel head designer and creative director Karl Lagerfeld released a limited edition collection I knew I had to pick up a curler… finally.

The curler is actually the same as a traditional Shu eyelash curler but includes a mini Mon Shu, a character Lagerfeld designed for the line, hanging from the arm, as well as a red pad in the curler (and a spare for later).

This is my first time using a Shu curler as I had a Sephora-brand one previously.  When I got my Sephora one I was told that it’s the same curler, it just has the Sephora name instead of Shu Uemura. I would have to disagree. I find the Shu curler is more round than the Sephora one and I would also say it gives a better curl on just bare lashes.

Bare lashes, no curl (side note: hello shine!)

Curled lashes

With mascara - YSL Faux Cils Shocking

If you have always wanted a Shu curler I would recommend picking this one up. I got mine at Holt Renfrew and it’s the same price (C$24) as the regular curler.  Aside from the charm and the red pad it’s the exact same curler as the original version, but I mean owning something that has that Karl Lagerfeld flair, makes it all the way better.

Have you tried the Shu Uemura x Karl Lagerfeld curler?  If so, what are your thoughts?  Also, do you think the curlers are worth the hype?

The Holiday Collection: Sephora Deco Daze Brush Set

There are very few brush sets that get my heart racing.  When I saw the Deco Daze set from Sephora, I knew this set was a showstopper.

This gorgeous set includes a powder brush, an angled blush brush, an eyeshadow brush, an angled liner, and an eye brush (as per the packaging from Sephora), all housed in a gorgeous clutch.  Now I usually find the brushes from sets to be lacking in quality and these are certainly not the best brushes I own (for the record, I love Quo brushes from Shopper’s Drug Mart), but this set is a real winner because of the clutch.

Top to bottom: Powder, Angled Blush, Angled Liner, Eyeshadow, Eye Brush (as per the packaging).

Alright, first about the brushes. I don’t necessarily agree with Sephora on their description of the brushes.  What they call a powder brush is more of a blush brush for me (and even then, I prefer a fluffier, round brush), the angled blush brush I use more for contouring.  Now, the “eye brush” is clearly an angled liner brush, they really messed up on that one (really Sephora?  Eye brush? You clearly use it for liner).  Aside from that, the quality on these are okay.  My favourite brushes are the liner, angled blush, and the shorter eyeshadow brush (which is perfect for getting the highlight on your brow bone).  I have much better brushes in terms of quality but these aren’t bad.  They are soft, not rough, but I just wish they were more fluffy.  For example, the eyeshadow brush is kind of sparse, same with the “powder” brush, which I use for blush.

Moving onto the clutch, this is easily my favourite part. It’s a hard case with a satin-like finish underneath a gold deco pattern.  On the inside it has a little pocket and a gold chain in case you want to wear it over your shoulder.

This is the perfect gift for anyone girly.  The brushes are a bonus but the real gift is the clutch.  If you are looking for a gift more for the brushes then I would skip this set because I feel like you could find better quality brushes in other sets (these are still good, but they aren’t the ones I reach for on a daily basis).  This set is really all about the clutch.

This set retails for C$70 ($58 USD) at Sephora.

Please note, I was sent this set for review purposes.  All opinions are my own.

NOTD: Deborah Lippmann Raise Your Glass

Deborah Lippmann, plus Canada’s luxury department store?  Can’t get any better than that!

Recently, Holt Renfrew, Canada’s high-end luxury department store (similar to Sak’s Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Barney’s, you get the idea), celebrated their 175th anniversary.  To commemorate the occasion, a few designers put out products exclusive to Holts to celebrate this milestone.  Among the many designers (most of which are some of my faves), including Christian Louboutin, Canada Goose, Michael Kors, Kate Spade, and more (see the list here), one of my favourite nail polish brands, Deborah Lippmann, released a shade exclusive to the department store in their signature magenta colour.

Now if there is a shade that makes my heart a-flutter, it would have to be Holts magenta (well, and Tiffany blue – check out Essie’s Where’s My Chauffeur or China Glaze Aquadelic).  I could spend hours, if not days, in Holt Renfrew.  My city unfortunately has the world’s worst Holt Renfrew location, as they are just personal shopping suites and select makeup counters, but whenever I’m in a larger centre (Montreal, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Toronto, etc.) I always stop by the store and just take everything in (luckily I’m usually alone, so I’m not rushed – no one is allowed to rush me in Holt Renfrew). In fact, one of the items on my bucket list is to visit every location in Canada, I just have Ottawa and Quebec City to tackle, i’ve been to all the others.  I have been to many Sak’s, Neimans, etc., but none of them have the magic that Holts has.  Maybe because it’s in Canadian dollars, or maybe because it’s really the only nationwide luxury department store Canada has, but nothing can compare to Holt Renfrew.

Anyways, when I was in Vancouver a couple weeks back I knew I had to pick up the special edition Raise Your Glass varnish by Deborah Lippmann, a beautiful Holts magenta colour with glitter.  I also picked up a few other goodies as well, posts on those coming soon!

Alright, to be honest, this isn’t my favourite Deborah Lippmann shade.  I originally passed on the colour when I saw it at my local store, but when I was in Vancouver, I knew I had to get it.  Not so much because of the colour, but because it’s a special edition item.  I wouldn’t say it’s true to colour, and it’s certainly is not long lasting (chipped after one day), but it’s a collectors piece and I’m happy to have it in my collection.

If you can still find this polish at your local Holts location and if you are a die-hard fan like me, I would suggest picking it up.  It is a pretty colour and Lippmann really added some flair with the colour by including glitter, something she is famous for.  I mean, what kind of party would it be if there were no glitter?

Have you tried Deborah Lippmann’s Raise Your Glass?  If so, what were your thoughts?
