Brows that wow: BrowLuxe Precision Brow Pencil

Brows need a little lift?

I recently blogged about how much I am loving the Benefit Cosmetic’s Goof Proof Brow Pencil. As you guys know, I got my eyebrows microbladed last year and although I love how they look, it’s still smart to invest in a good brow pencil to fill in any sparcity as the pigment wears away (microblading doesn’t last forever).

I’m from Winnipeg and one of our city’s entrepreneurs, Giovanna Minenna, has been getting a lot of press lately thanks to her Dragons’ Den appearance, as well as her brow pencil, Browluxe.

BrowLuxe Precision Brow Pencil

At first glance, the Browluxe Precision Brow Pencil (C$21.95) looks very similar to the Benefit Goof Proof, and more or less, it works the same way. This pencil is housed in a luxurious gold casing and features a spoolie on one end and a retractable pencil on the other. The pencil side is actually angled to replicate a microblade, allowing you to recreate those fine strokes representing brow hairs.

The pencil is available in eight different shades to cover a variety of brow colours and skin tones. The formula is vegan-friendly and not tested on animals (which, I don’t believe the Benefit one is) and your brows won’t move all day thanks to its water-resistant formula.

I received the shade Coffee, which is one of their newer colours. Overall, I thought the pencil did a great job of filling in my brows since it was nice and creamy, and the angled tip was a nice help to create that faux hair effect. In addition, I really love how the spoolie helps to correct any mistake you can make (not only does it brush out your brows, but it acts as a great eraser as well!).

If you are looking for a new brow product to try out, or if you are a fan of Benefit’s Goof Proof but looking for a vegan version, I would recommend looking into Browluxe. Not only is it a natural product, but it’s also a Canadian brand (the pencils themselves are made in South Korea), which is definitely a huge perk (#supportlocal). They do offer worldwide shipping and if you are in the Winnipeg or Calgary area, then you can pick yours up a number of stockists available through their site. If you choose to order a pencil you can also score 15% off with code POP15!

Sugary sweet: Tarte Sugar Rush makeup line

I love practically everything Tarte Cosmetics does. In my eyes, the vegan makeup line basically can’t go wrong with any beauty item, so when I saw they came out with a whole new brand of products, I was instantly intrigued.

Sugar Rush is the kid sister to Tarte and features the same healthy ingredients and fun, cheeky packaging as its predecessor (in fact, all the packaging is recyclable).  Although the line features a small amount of items compared to Tarte, its main focus is on skincare and makeup. There are under 20 items to choose from, all under $25 USD, making it super affordable and – not going to lie – geared towards more of a younger audience.

Now I’m 30 but definitely think I’m young at heart, so I was jumping for joy when some of these items came in. The brand features a cute cactus brush set, a couple eyeshadow palettes (including one that looks like a watermelon), blushes, lipsticks, and more.

I received a couple of their Beach Cheeks Cream Blushes, along with an assortment of lip products. At first glance you would never even know that the Beach Cheeks Cream Blushes (C$20) aren’t even part of the regular Tarte line since the packaging is definitely something you would see the brand come out with.  Available in two shades, these blushes are housed in a seashell case that opens up to the product along with a mirror.

These blushes are a gel-cream formula which you can apply with your fingers or a brush for a flawless, natural finish. The formula contains shea butter, mango seed butter, and avocado oil to leave skin moisturized. I got both shades, Beaches & Cream (peachy pink) and Ocean Girl (rosy pink), and although I’m not really a cream blush fan these did do a good job on packing the colour on for a natural-looking flush. Honestly, you wouldn’t even be able to tell that this isn’t a Tarte-branded product, that’s how good of a job it does (Tarte doesn’t offer a cream blush formula, but their Amazonian Clay Blushes retail for C$38, so almost double the price). I haven’t applied these with my fingers but I did find a brush did a good job of applying the product.

If you’re looking for more colour, then their Sugar Coat Velvet Lipsticks (C$19) should be right up your alley. These liquid lipsticks, available in four shades, dry down to a velvety matte texture that give you a finish worthy of a lipstick that’s more than C$20. All four shades are neutrals, making them wearable for just about any skin tone and the formula itself contains sunflower seed and rosehip oil to help smooth the appearance of lips. It has a delectable vanilla scent to it and won’t dry out your lips.

I wouldn’t say these are non-transferable since it’s a creamy texture but if you like the look of matte liquid lipsticks but don’t like how they feel, then I think you’ll enjoy these. I received the colour Frosting (rosy pink) and am totally looking forward to the day when they bring out more shades to choose from (they also offer minis of these shades for $13 each) since these are so beautiful on and don’t feel as drying as other matte liquid lipsticks out there.

Speaking of lips, Sugar Rush also has a variety of other lip products, including the Couple Goals Double-Ended Lip Glosses (C$23). Available in five shade combos, these are double-ended lip glosses that feature complementary shades in shimmer and cream finishes. The formula is non-sticky contains sunflower seed wax to nourish the lips. The really cool thing about these is you can actually customize them since both ends twist off. So if your friend gets one but doesn’t like one of the colours on them, you can swap shades. These are a comfortable, long wear on the lips (smell delish!).

I’m not a huge gloss person, but did like the shades I received, Best/Friend (peach and peach shimmer) and Jeans and Sneakers (rosy brown and rosy brown shimmer). The only thing I would change about these is I wish the cream end was just a regular matte liquid lipstick with the shimmery end as the gloss. I don’t get the point of having two glosses since you would typically just pick one gloss to wear (especially since they are the same colour, one is just shimmer).

Finally, if you are looking for something nourishing to just throw on the lips, the Lip Sip Vegan Lip Oil (C$19) should do the trick. Available in three shades (red, raspberry, and nude), these lip oils contain jojoba, hazel, and sunflower seed oil for the most comfortable wear. I received the shade Dragonfruit, which is the raspberry, and although it looks dark in the tube, it actually just gives you a slight wash of colour thanks to its doe foot applicator (it also has a raspberry sugar cookie flavour that smells delish!).

The brand says these are non-sticky, but let me put it this way, if you were wearing this and it’s windy outside, your hair will definitely stick to your lips.  It’s a thick formula but feels nourishing when applied.

There are a number of other Sugar Rush products to choose from, so if you are a fan of Tarte or always wanted to try the brand, but can’t justify the cost, then I would definitely look into the Sugar Rush brand.  Honestly, if you didn’t know that it was called something else, you would for sure think it was just Tarte. Except of course, a little less money. Cha-ching!

Have you tried anything from Tarte’s Sugar Rush brand?

Vacay dreaming: Buxom Wanderlust Primer-Infused Blush

I’ve never really been picky with my blushes.

I have some friends who live and breathe blushes and go through them as fast I eat a medium-sized personal pizza. For me, a blush will last me a long time and truthfully, it takes a lot for me not to like a specific blush product or brand.

With that being said, although I get in tons of makeup items, I probably get the least blushes out of any item, so I’m always super excited when some new ones roll in. Like take for instance, the Buxom Wanderlust Primer-Infused blushes (C$27).

These blushes, available in six shades (all named after exotic locales… except for Dolly), is a silky primer-infused powder blush, meaning that it pacts some serious colour with a long 12-hour wear. And when I say it packs colour, I mean it PACTS colour.

But we’ll get to that in a second ;).

These blushes contains hydrating hyaluronic acid and a colourless base to seamlessly blend and flatter different skin tones. Colour glides onto the skin and sticks there for a luminous, opaque glow.

I received three of the six shades, Mykonos (peach), Ibiza (pink), and Seychelles (bronze). I am typically quite heavy handed with blushes when I apply them since most formulas I would say tend to lean on the more sheer side. Not these. A little goes a long way and you definitely need a light hand when applying these since the colour goes on very pigmented. That’s definitely not a bad thing though since these blushes will probably last you a very long time.

Overall, I love these and since the packaging is quite compact, it makes it super easy to travel with. I also want to note that although Seychelles is described as a bronze, I definitely think it’s more of a blush as opposed to a bronzer.

I think these will be perfect to wear during the summer months since they’ll look so perfect with a tan, plus those shade names will totally have you feeling like vacay mode is on, even if that means you’re just chilling by the pool at your friend’s house ;).
