Kind + conscious: Evio Beauty

I love a brand that has a good message behind it.

I recently got introduced to Canadian brand Evio Beauty and as soon as I learned more about the brand, I knew I would love it. The brand was started by Brandi Leifso, who founded it at age 21 when she was living at a domestic violence shelter. The brand is an impact-led clean beauty brand whose mission is to break stigmas with high-performing and inclusive beauty products. Social impact is at the core of their brand and they have donated more than $500,000 of funds and products to organizations that help the underdogs thrive.

Their products are vegan, paraben-free, gluten-free and toxic-free and they ensure that their ingredients are ethically sourced and mindful of environmental impact. The brand is made up of skincare and makeup and the price point of the items are very reasonable with everything being under C$60.

I recently got sent some all-star items and was so excited to try them out, and having used them now for a few weeks, I can honestly say that the brand is quite impressive. If you are looking to dive in and give them a shot too, then here are my recommendations.

Evio Beauty Serum Treatment Kit

Evio Beauty Serum Treatment Kit

The Evio Beauty Serum Treatment Kit (C$51, valued at C$58) consists of their Revitalizing Oil Serum, as well as their bestselling Lip Serum.

The Revitalizing Oil Serum, which retails for C$38 by itself, is a made with a blend of nine plant-based oils and extracts to soothe inflammation and redness and reduce the appearance of fine lines. The blend includes omegas 3 and 6, hempseed oil, rosehip oil, jojoba seed oil, avocado oil, as well as vitamins B, C, and E and helps to hydrate and nourish your skin while also strengthening the skin’s barrier by keeping water in and irritants out.

The formula is an oil and quickly absorbs into the skin. Use it before your moisturizer for radiant, glowing, and even skin.

In addition to the serum, you also get their iconic Lip Serum in Did I Make Myself Clear, which is a soothing lip serum that repairs the skin barrier and forms a seal over your lips to keep moisture in.

This serum, which also comes in a sheer pink, contains hemp and peppermint to heal lips. It also has omega 3, 6, 9 to repair the skin barrier and keep life soft, supple, and hydrated.

I always have to have a lip balm with me at all times, and this one really fits the bill.  It goes on so smooth and feels so moisturizing on the lips. It also contains peppermint oil, shea butter, and hempseed oil and is the perfect lip serum for everyday wear.  This serum retails for C$22 by itself, so to get both products in the set is a great deal.

Evio Beauty Velvet Colour Sticks

Evio Beauty Velvet Colour Sticks

I love a versatile product.

The Evio Beauty Velvet Colour Sticks (C$32 each) is a buildable colour balm that you can use for the lips, cheeks and eyes. Available in four shades, this cream stick gives you a naturally radiant monochromatic look that you can use in a variety of different ways.

I got the shade In a World, which is a nude taupe colour and the kind of shade I would reach for normally for my cheeks and lips.  The product is so creamy and glides on the skin, leaving you with a beautiful flushed colour that radiates and blends in perfectly. These sticks are so perfect for travel since they are super versatile and I find I have been using it a lot for my blush and lip colour lately since this particular colour is super flattering.

Evio Beauty also has a variety of other skincare and beauty products, such as lip glosses, lip liners, concealers, mascara, masks, and more.  You can find them online via their official site or through Hudsons Bay, Urban Outfitters, and Shoppers Drug Mart.

Clean + luxurious: Two must-have Erno Laszlo products to try

I love trying out new products and bonus points if they fall into the clean and luxury category.

I’ve known about NYC brand Erno Laszlo for years now but haven’t had the opportunity to try it.  The skincare brand, which was founded by Dr. Erno Laszlo in 1920s, has been used by legendary screen stars Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Jackie Onassis, and Greta Garbo, and is a science-backed skincare brand.

You can find Erno Laszlo products at places like Sephora and Holt Renfrew, and their products don’t contain any sulphates, parabens, mineral oil, silicones, and more. In fact, they have banned over 2,000 ingredients from their products and they commit to using sustainable packaging as well.

If you’re new to the brand like I am, it can be a little intimidating trying to figure out what products to try first. Since I have a pretty good skincare routine right now I was looking to try some items that I could incorporate into my routine and the two I chose fit the bill perfectly.

Erno Laszlo Multi-Task Serum Eye Mask

The Multi-Task Serum Eye Mask (C$55 for six) is a hydrogel patch that instantly hydrates, nourishes, and brightens the eye area.  Apply these patches under your eyes for 10 minutes and then remove and pat the left-over serum into the eye area.

These patches help to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, dark circles, and bags under the eyes, leaving the area looking renewed and rejuvenated, as well as more luminous.

The formula contains a gel-forming agent called Locust Bean Gum that works to help the patches recover their structure upon application, meaning that once you apply them they won’t slip and slide all over the face.  They also include algae extract, niacinamide to brighten, Centella Asiatica, which is antioxidant rich, allantoin, which soothes, and moisture-binding humectants Saccharide Isomerate and Sodium Hyaluronate saturate skin with moisture.

These are on the pricier end for eye patches (you can also get a two pack for C$50 (but honestly why get the two pack when the six pack is $5 more?), so I would reserve these for special events.

Erno Laszlo Shake-It Tinted Treatment

Now that your eyes are looking fresh, time to get the rest of your skin in tip-top shape. The Erno Laszlo Shake-It Tinted Treatment (C$81) is a tinted toner treatment that comes in one universal shade that works across all skin tones.  Apply this to your skin to help even out your skin tone, control excess oil, and visibly reduce pores for a sheer, matte finish.

The brand recommends you apply this directly after your moisturizer. Shake it up, apply it on a cotton round, and then work it onto your face.  This product is billed as limited time, but I believe it has been around for a while.  The formula is a skincare/makeup hybrid and features 80 per cent treatment and 20 per cent pigment.  It’s great to use on an everyday basis, especially if you aren’t doing anything or seeing anyone (like I am since I work from home).  It contains a water-binding glycerin which helps skin retain moisture, as well as citric acid for astringent and antioxidant properties.  It also contains calcium carbonate to absorb surface oil, and a cosmetic-grade alcohol which tightens pores without drying out the skin.

I really like this product and like applying it in the morning before my sunscreen. I find it’s very light but does give a nice finish to your skin. It’s not like a tinted moisturizer or anything but rather lighter in finish and feeling.  Do I think it’s absolutely necessary for your skincare routine? No, but I do think it’s a good thing to use if you don’t wear makeup often but want a little something on your face.

Erno Laszlo Shake-It Tinted Treatment swatched

Of course these are just two items from Erno Laszlo. The line contains way more items that will help your skin look like a movie star ;).

Feeling breathless: Tula Brightening Serum Skin Tint Sunscreen with Broad Spectrum SPF 30

Tula Brightening Serum Skin Tint Sunscreen with Broad Spectrum SPF 30 My favourite sunscreen is the Tula Protect + Glow Daily Sunscreen Gel Broad Spectrum SPF 30.

I’ve tried a lot of facial sunscreens and they have the tendency to feel thick on my face or pill after I apply them. This particular Tula one has a gel consistency to it so it absorbs nicely and doesn’t leave a layer on the surface of your face.

Now when it comes to actually adding coverage to my skin, IT Cosmetics’ CC Cream is usually my go to, with the Rodial and Smashbox versions as close second. Tula doesn’t have makeup products since they are a skincare line, however, they have recently introduced a new product that melds together sunscreen and coverage and I couldn’t be more excited to try it.

Tula Brightening Serum Skin Tint Sunscreen with Broad Spectrum SPF 30

The Tula Brightening Serum Skin Tint Sunscreen with Broad Spectrum SPF 30 ($40 USD) is a skin tint that is weightless in texture while still leaving your skin feeling breathable. It has a serum-like formula to it and in addition to providing you with SPF 30 sun protection, it also evens the look of skin tone and increases your skin’s radiance.

The formula contains their new Rainbow Seabright Elixir, which contains rainbow seaweed and niacinamide and helps to even out the look of skin tone and brighten and protect skin from blue light and pollution. It also has hyaluronic acid and ceramides to improve skin hydration and suppleness, as well as their S6Pro Complex to improve skin smootheness and collagen to improve the look of fine lines and wrinkles.

Tula sent me a few shades to try out and since this is their first true makeup-esque product (aside from their Filter Primers), I do have to say that they outdid themselves with the shade range. The colours range from very light to very dark and everything in between. Tula actually worked with professional makeup artists that are experienced in working on diverse skin tones to come up with the extensive shade range.

Tula Brightening Serum Skin Tint Sunscreen with Broad Spectrum SPF 30

Now when it comes to application, I have just been applying it with my fingers and find it absorbs and blends in nicely that way. You can of course also use a brush for a more flawless application. Overall it leaves you with a nice light coverage, something that is not as heavy as the IT Cosmetics version or others that are similar that I have tried.

Unfortunately this is not available in Canada on the Tula site as of yet since it is technically a sunscreen (their sunscreens aren’t available in Canada yet) but if you are in the United States then I would look out for it if you are already a Tula fan (use code SHAYNA for 15% off!). I can see myself wearing this on a daily basis since it is so lightweight and gives me just enough coverage that I don’t need to wear makeup if it’s a day where I’m not going anywhere or doing anything but want to have a little bit of skin coverage.
