Prime time: Three primers to add to your collection

Ah yes, primers. The hidden superheroes of our makeup routines.

Do primers really work? Do you really need a $40 primer for your makeup to last longer? It may seem like a gimmicky item, but when I don’t wear primers, I can tell there is a difference.

Primers go way beyond just making your foundation last longer on your skin. Nowadays there are so many different primers out there targeted for different skin concerns. Have big pores? Redness? Dullness? Dry skin? Uneven skin tone?  Just like how you would prime your wall before painting it, you should also prime your face before applying makeup.

Anyways, since primers have definitely become a league of their own, I wanted to share some new ones to hit my collection lately. Since, you know, you can never have enough of them and every primer works differently for every individual.

So here goes…

Tula Face Filter Blurring & Moisturizing Primer

Tula Face Filter Blurring & Moisturizing Primer

One of my favourite skincare lines recently came out with a primer!

Unfortunately for us Canadians, Tula is no longer shipping to Canada for the time being, but if you have a trip scheduled to the States (or a U.S. mailbox), then definitely add their new primer to your order!

The Face Filter Blurring & Moisturizing Primer ($34) helps to smooth the appearance of uneven skin tone, neutralizes the look of redness, locks in hydration, and creates a base for your makeup. The formula, perfect for pretty much any skin tone, includes the usual Tula  ingredients which make their products so amazing, including probiotics, prebiotics, turmeric, chia seeds, and more to not only help your skin look its best, but also feel its best too!

The great thing about this primer is that you can wear it so many ways. You can obviously wear it under makeup or it can be worn by itself since it dispenses white, but then once blended, it releases glow particles that create a warm-toned base to blur out any imperfections and give you a sun-kissed glow.

You guys know I love Tula products and I’ll be sharing a few more new ones over the coming weeks with you guys. If you are interested in picking up this primer, use my code SHAYNA for 20% off your order!

Fenty Beauty Pro Filter Mattifying Primer

Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Mattifying Primer

Just like Tula, I love anything and everything Fenty Beauty as well.

Since I already have the full Fenty Pro Filt’r face line (foundation, concealer, setting powder), I absolutely needed their primer when I saw they released one (I have their eye primer and LOVE it!).

The Pro Filt’r Mattifying Primer (C$42) is a primer for combination to oily skin that helps to instantly mattify your face and extend the wear of your foundation.

This white primer joins the brand’s other primer (Instant Retouch Primer) but is designed for oily to combination skin since it helps tone down shine. In addition to providing with you a matte base for your foundation it also smoothes the look of pores and helps your foundation last longer and blend out more evenly.

The formula includes Blue Agave Extract and blurring powders to help give you the perfect base for the rest of your routine.

I have normal skin so I may not be the perfect candidate to try this out and tell you if it does its job properly, but that didn’t stop me from using it and loving it. Typically I apply my makeup after my skincare routine in the morning when my face is looking a little shiny anyways. The formula just melts into your skin and I found it helped create the perfect base which made my makeup last longer on my skin.

Stila Lingerie Soufflé's Skin Perfecting Primer

Stila Lingerie Soufflé Skin Perfecting Primer

Okay, so this one I have actually chatted about before (and dedicated an entire post to) but I had to mention it again since I’m still digging it and I truly think it’s one of the best ones out there.

The Stila Lingerie Soufflé Skin Perfecting Primer (C$47) is available in two tones (illuminating and bronzing) and has a variety of functions to give you the perfect makeup application. First thing you’ll notice when you apply this is how refreshing it is on the skin, thanks to its whipped gel formula. In fact, it contains over 70 per cent water making it a nice treat on your skin (it also has some natural botanicals thrown in for the most comfortable wear… seriously, it’s so refreshing!).

As for the actual priming factor, this product has light-reflecting pearls which add a natural-looking glow with a blurring, skin-perfecting effect. You’ll notice that once you apply your foundation over top it will go on so smoothly. Sometimes with primers you will feel a tackiness to the skin, but not with this one, it literally makes all your other beauty products just glide on the skin.

What I love about this primer is the fact that it’s so moisturizing and refreshing on the skin when you apply it. It truly feels like a moisturizer and just glides on the skin, leaving it hydrated and primed to take on your day. Best of all, it comes in the most stunning glass container that is totally excessive but looks super cute on your vanity.

Primers from Tula, Fenty Beauty, and Stila

Although you don’t see the primers on your skin, they are definitely a must in anyone’s makeup collection. I also want to note that these primers are a little on the pricey side, but if you are looking for one more affordable, I’ve also been digging the CoverGirl TruBlend Base Business primers, which come in a variety of different formulas for multiple skin concerns.

They may be an investment, but if you’re spending your hard-earned cash on makeup products anyways, might as well pick one up that will help your other ones perform their best.

What’s your favourite primer?

Please note, I received these products from PR. All opinions are my own.
