Alexandra Stan’s Lemonade music video inspired look

So I was on the hunt for new music and saw that Alexandra Stan had a new single out.  I have been listening to her for a few years now and whenever she releases a new song I usually love it right away (I’m the same way with Inna, another Romanian artist).

Anyways, her new single “Lemonade” shows a more “classier” Stan (not to say she’s trashy or anything), and not only is the song great, but her makeup looks fab too.  This look is very wearable if you choose to not apply the lashes and maybe take the exaggerated winged liner down a bit.  Regardless, it’s a beautiful look and easy to recreate.

Here’s how to create it:

Like always, start off with a fresh base.  I used Garnier’s BB Cream with Bare Minerals Original Foundation over top.

Grabbing a bronzer (I used It Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores Airbrush Bronzer) and apply this in the hollows of your cheeks and bring it up to your temples.  Stan has a very contoured, bronzed face in the video.

Next up is blush.  Grab a tan shade and apply it along your cheek bones.  You don’t necessarily want to apply the product on the apple of your cheeks; more along the bone.

Her eyebrows are a lot thinner than mine, but even if you have thicker brows like myself, the point is that they want to look perfect and polished.  I used It Cosmetics Brow Power Perfector in Universal Taupe.

After you fill in your brows, grab a highlight and apply it under the arch.  I used It Cosmetics Brow Power Lift (the pearl side).

Moving onto the eyes, her eye makeup is very neutral and basic.  I often wear the following combo to the office because it’s simple, easy, and quick to do.

For the lid area I applied MAC’s Paint Pot in Bare Study. You can use either a cream product or a powder, but make sure it is a neutral beige colour.

Grabbing a soft brown colour, like Urban Decay’s Buck from the Naked 1 palette, work this into your crease using a fluffy brush. Make sure it is blended well.

Grabbing that same dark brown colour, line your lower lash line, keeping it tight.  After, grab either a white eyeliner or a light-coloured eyeshadow and line your waterline with it. I used It Cosmetics Brow Power Lift for my waterline as well.  Her lower lashes are very subtle and simple.

Moving onto the hardest part and the step that makes the look – the eyeliner.  Stan has a very pronounced winged liner along her upper lash line.  Make sure you take you time doing this step!

What I did was just line my eyes along my upper lash line using a liquid eye liner (MAC’s Liquid Eye Liner in black), then going back, from the middle of your eye draw a diagonal line and then connect it from where your liner ends along your lash line.  From there, fill it in.  It takes some practice to get right, so make sure you have some Q-Tips and eye makeup remover handy just in case.

Once you have the liner down, curl and apply mascara to your lashes.  Then, pop on some full falsies.  She is obviously wearing fake lashes in the video and a full fringe adds that sex kitten look to the eyes.  Make sure that you don’t add mascara to your bottom lashes, keep those very minimal.

Because the main focus is the eyes, the lips are very subtle and neutral, with a hint of gloss.  I used Revlon Lip Butter in Creme Brulee with Bailey Fresh Lip Gloss in Berry over top.

And here’s the final look!  Like I said earlier, if you tone down the eyeliner a bit and don’t add the lashes this look is perfect for the day time. Recreate it as shown and it would be perfect for a night out.

Let me know if you try this one out!

August 2012 Topbox

This month’s Topbox came a little later than normal because apparently they didn’t get a sample on time.  Luckily this month’s tube came with a decent amount of goodies so I would say it was well worth the wait.

Here’s what I got:

  • L’Eau de Chloe Perfumed Body Lotion Sample 30ml – Full size $60 (200ml)
  • Dot Marc Jacobs Eau de Parfum Sample 4ml. – Full size retail $79 (50ml), $105 (100ml)
  • Expression Blush Brush – Full size retail value $22.
  • Pink Wipe – 1 wipe – Full size 15pcs $12
  • Kellett Skincare Polishing Gel Cleanser Sample 10ml – Full size $45 (130ml)
  • BONUS ITEMS: Nexxus Therappe Shampoo 89ml and Humectress Conditioner 89ml

Not a bad box this month, it’s definitely more of a bath and body one I would say though.  The Chloe body lotion has a nice scent and Ziggy and Chase sure tried their hardest to lick it off me when I applied it.  I often find that perfume samples are usually lazy on beauty box company’s part, however, the Marc Jacobs sample is a great size, it’s similar to what you would get when you buy those perfume samples that come with a gift card for a full size at Shopper’s Drug Mart.

I wasn’t too impressed with the blush brush, which is too bad considering I loved the Expression bronzer brush that was included in the May box. To me, the brush just feels cheap.  I’ll be sticking to my tried and true Quo brush that I have had forever to regularly apply my blush.

The Kellett Polishing Gel Cleanser and the Pink Wipe was a little iffy, mostly due to the fact that I’m not sure where you use these products.  Well, I have somewhat of an idea but the card that Topbox supplies didn’t really go into too much detail on where you would use these.  Is the gel cleanser for your face?  Body?  And the Pink Wipe, well I’m assuming that is for your nether region…  kind of an odd sample to give away.

I would probably say my favourite sample would be the bonus Nexxus shampoo and conditioner samples, which were very generous.  You can never have too much shampoos and conditioners and these are the perfect size for travelling.

Overall, I’m happy with the box, I’ve had worse boxes and I’ve had better ones.  I hope the ones coming up offer more makeup products.  I’m so over the skincare and perfume samples.

Did you get August 2012’s Topbox?  If so, what were your thoughts?

The perfect legs featuring Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs

I never thought I would do a blog post on my legs.  I’m definitely one of those girls who when asked their best and worst features my legs would have to be on the worst list.  I’m pretty short (5″3) with what I like to refer to them as “short and stubby” gams.  For the longest time I wouldn’t even wear shorts because I just wish they were longer and thinner (and I work out six days a week too, including teaching a fitness class).

Anyways, enough the whining (cry me a river, right?).  I have known about Sally Hansen’s Airbrush Legs for a while now but I have never bothered to give it a chance.  The product isn’t a self tanner, but it’s a rub on spray that will diminish the look of veins, spots, and any other “imperfection” you may have on your legs.  It’s essentially like pantyhose without the pantyhose.

The Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs comes in four colours, Light Glow, Medium Glow, Tan Glow, and Deep Glow.  Being the pale girl I am, I chose to try Light Glow, however, I did have a friend on hand who is darker than I am (she tans way better than I) to try out the Medium Glow version.

Before.

Here are my before shots.  As you can see I have a few veins that are visible. Plus, I just look pasty white.  I need something to make those bad boys stand out.

The product is very easy to apply.  You actually spray it directly onto your hands (it’s pretty cold) and then rub it onto your legs.  Make sure you don’t get it on your clothes though.  As for drying time, it sets very quickly, about a minute and it surprisingly didn’t rub off on anything, even my white capris that I wore the day after.  To remove the product you have to scrub it off in the shower.  It is billed as waterproof and I didn’t actually test the waters to see if the claim is correct, but I really have to loofa this stuff in the shower to remove it all.

Here is my after shot.  As you can see, my legs to look smoother, and best of all, they are pretty shiny.  The product leaves a sparkly sheen on your legs so they literally sparkle.  It’s not anything too dramatic, it’s subtle.

Before

After

Above is my friend’s before and after shots using the Medium Glow colour.  In the after shot her legs literally looked airbrushed.  I did Photoshop these photos, however, I just adjusted the lighting I didn’t correct anything in them.

I was a little apprehensive in using this product because there are so many items out there that claim to do things and then don’t live up to the hype.  This stuff actually works and you better believe I will be applying it whenever I’m sporting shorts or skirts during a night out.  I also know that Kim Kardashian uses it to cover her psoriasis which is pretty impressive.

It is a little pricey at around C$15 a bottle, but to me it’s worth it.  Please note that it is not a self tanner, it’s essentially just leg makeup. I would definitely use this over a tanner though to really make my legs look fab.

Thanks for the photobomb Zig.

Have you tried Sally Hansen’s Airbrush Legs?  If so, what were your thoughts?

Please note that I was sent these products for review purposes, however, all opinions are my own.
