So a skincare must? Definitely a cleanser.
There is nothing like washing your face in the morning and at night and your skincare routine should start with a cleanser. Using one of these products help to remove any makeup, dirt, oily, pollution, etc. from your skin, prepping it for the rest of your routine.
So I always say on here that you don’t need to spend an arm and a leg on a good cleanser as there are so many different ones out there and when it comes to skincare, it’s a pretty basic product. You don’t need to go fancy or look for any special bells and whistles. Most of them do the trick. With that being said, I do have a few favourites in my collection, some of which are a little more expensive, but regardless they all pretty much do the same job.
Now if you are on the hunt for a new cleanser but want some recommendations first, then keep reading.
Fresh Soy Face Cleanser
When it comes to cleansers you can get at Sephora, the Fresh Soy Face Cleanser is definitely the most iconic.
The Soy Fresh Face Cleanser (C$58) is a pH-balancing face wash that contains amino acid-rich soy proteins that help to melt away makeup and the look of impurities for more toned skin.
Perfect for all skin types, this helps with dry, dull and uneven texture. The lightweight gel gently removes any dirt, oil, makeup, you name it, on the skin so you are left feeling soft and hydrated. The formula also contains calming cucumber extract to soothe the skin, as well as rosewater to calm and balance.
Fresh has this cleanser available in a variety of sizes and price points so you don’t have to break the bank to pick it up. I recommend their limited-edition 200 ml size since it will last you for a few months (I would say anywhere from three to four months!).
Tula Purifying Cleanser
Another favourite of mine is the Tula Purifying Face Cleanser (which I’ve also got all my friends hooked on – it’s that good!)
Tula’s Purifying Cleanser (C$35) is a refreshing probiotic cleanser that cleans your skin deep into the pores to remove impurities and condition skin. It’s perfect for all skin types and I love using it with my FOREO Luna or Clarisonic for an even deeper clean.
The star ingredients in this cleanser are lactic acid to naturally clean and exfoliate the skin; chicory root, which is a natural anti-inflammatory prebiotic to help boost the appearance of firmer skin; turmeric root, which helps reduce the signs of inflammation; blueberries, which help protect skin from free-radical attacks; and probiotics to hydrate and lock in moisture.
I talk about Tula a lot on here and this is definitely one of the products that you should pick up from the brand. There’s a reason they call it a cult classic; it’s really that good! If you are interested in picking it up, or any Tula product, use code SHAYNA for 15% off your order!
CeraVe Hydrating Cream to Foam Cleanser
If you are looking for an amazing drugstore cleanser – or just a great cleanser in general – then take a look at CeraVe.
CeraVe is known for their cleansers and I’ve also chatted a lot about them on here. I know so many people who use this cleanser and it’s often sold out at the drugstore. There are a few formulas out there but the one I really love is the new Hydrating Cream-to-Foam cleanser for normal to dry skin.
The Hydrating Cream-to-Foam Cleanser (C$19.99) joined their their lineup of existing cleansers earlier this year and it’s aimed at normal to dry skin and is perfect for removing makeup and cleansing your skin. This cleanser starts off as a cream formula and then works it way into a foaming cleanser to gently and effectively remove makeup, dirt, and oil, all while cleaning your skin.
The formula is effective and gentle and contains the brands three essential ceramides to restore the protective skin barrier, as well as MVE delivery technology, which is control released for all-day hydration. The cleanser also has amino acids and hyaluronic acid to hold water on the skin.
CeraVe has a ton of other cleansers available if you have different skincare concerns. Make sure to check them out in the drugstore aisle to find the best one for you.
These are just some of the many cleansers I have used over the years. When it comes to skincare you should definitely try to invest your money in a good serum, eye cream, and moisturizer, your cleanser isn’t the most important in terms of where you should be spending your money. All of these are relatively affordable and will do a great job of cleansing your skin.
What’s your favourite cleanser?

Cleanser, toner, and moisturizer. I grew up using this routine religiously when it came to skincare. As I got older I started to incorporate a lot more items into my routine, including a serum.
Right now, being 33 years old, I can’t imagine doing my skincare without including a serum. Although you technically don’t need to use one, a serum just has a higher amount of active ingredients than a moisturizer so it’s better for treating certain skincare concerns.
Although serums are pretty expensive when compared to other products in a regimen, they don’t have to be. As you know, the skincare industry has exploded over the past few years and you can find incredible drugstore products that rival their luxury counterparts.
If you are looking for a new serum to incorporate into your routine that won’t break the bank, then don’t worry boo, I got you. Keep reading..
L’Oreal Paris Revitalift 1.5% Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum
As you get older you’ll find your skin starts to droop. One thing that can help with this is using a serum that is targeted for anti-aging. The L’Oreal Paris Revitalift 1.5% Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum (C$38.99) is a face serum that is designed to give you visibly plumped skin and reduced wrinkles. This serum contains the brand’s highest concentration of pure hyaluronic acid, which is something that your body naturally produces. When it is added to skincare it helps to reduce fine lines and wrinkles while retaining moisture to the skin, which creates that plumping effect.
This serum has two forms of hyaluronic acid in it. It has 0.5 per cent high molecular weight pure hyaluronic acid to intensely hydrate the skin and help lock in moisture for a more dewy look. It also has 1.0 per cent low molecular weight pure hyaluronic acid to absorb more easily to help smooth skin texture and instantly plump the skin.
You’ll find with regular use, this serum will leave your skin looking more youthful and plump. Skin will also feel more firmer and elastic, as well as brighter.
Garnier Green Labs Replumping Serum Cream Hyalu-Melon with SPF30
So this next serum is actually a three-in-one product.
The Garnier Green Labs Replumping Serum Cream Hyalu-Melon with SPF30 (C$18.97) is a moisturizer, serum, and an SPF all in one. This product has a lightweight moisturizer feel to it and a pleasant scent of watermelon. It contains watermelon and hyaluronic acid to hydrate skin and fill in fine lines and wrinkles for smoother skin.
I really like the idea of this since it cuts out three products and has it all in one lightweight formula. I’m not sure how potent the formula would be but if you are in your teens or looking for something for travel then this would be a great option. I found it was really pleasant to apply and my skin did feel hydrated all day. I also love the added SPF since it’s super important to apply a sunscreen every morning (even if you aren’t going outside or if it’s winter).
Vichy Mineral 89
When it comes to drugstore serums, one of the most iconic ones is Vichy’s Mineral 89 (C$41.95).
This serum, which Vichy says is the number-one serum in Canada, is aimed to repair, fortify, and hydrate skin to protect is against aggressors like pollution, weather, stress, and fatigue. The formula contains 89 per cent of Vichy volcanic water and natural-origin hyaluronic acid.
Any skin type can use this and is great for daily use. It contains only 11 ingredients. This lightweight serum is great to use morning and night. After regular use it will make skin feel more hydrated, plumped, and toned. It will also leave you with a healthy and radiant glow.
Of course these are just three drugstore serums. There are so many available now that come with a good price tag and great ingredients. The skincare industry has truly evolved over the last 10 years and you definitely don’t need to break the bank to pick up a good serum.

When it comes to my daytime skincare routine, one thing that I have to include now is Vitamin C.
A few months ago I participated in a Zoom call with Skinceuticals where they talked about their Vitamin C serums and the importance of adding Vitamin C into your routine. If you suffer from uneven skin tone, hyperpigmentation, wrinkles and fines lines, or dullness (which honestly, who doesn’t have one of those?), then it’s time you started to incorporate a Vitamin C product into your routine.
In case you aren’t familiar with what Vitamin C (also known as L-Ascorbic acid) does, and why you should use it, let me entertain you. Vitamin C is great for protecting your skin against free radicals from sunlight that causes damage to skin cells. It also helps with stimulating collagen production, which is helpful for improving the visible signs of aging. In addition to all this, it brightens your skin and can help with hyperpigmentation.
Now the Skinceuticals Vitamin C serums are on the pricier end of things, but if you are looking for a more affordable option, then RoC has your back. They recently introduced a Vitamin C collection earlier this year, which contains products aimed to give you younger-looking, brighter, and more even skin tone.
The RoC Vitamin C collection contains four products, three of which they sent me. The collection contains a 10 per cent active Vitamin C blend and will help you attain younger-looking skin.
Start first with the Multi Correxion Revive + Glow Gel Cleanser (C$14.99), which is a cleanser that is clinically proven to give you brighter and more radiant skin. This cleanser contains a formula with a potent combination of glycolic acid to resurface and extract skin-dulling impurities, as well as Vitamin C to give you brighter, smoother, and more even skin.
You can use this cleanser for both morning and night, and over time you will notice smoother skin and better tone and texture.
Now that your skin is clean and prepped, go in with the RoC Multi Correxion Revive + Glow Daily Serum (C$43.99). This serum contains a supercharged formula that gives you more luminous skin, as well as visibly reduced lines and wrinkles. It contains a 10 per cent active Vitamin C blend and is lightweight enough to use daily. The Vitamin C blend contains a highly stable form of Vitamin C with complementary peptides, antioxidants, and advanced hydrators for better efficacy.
Definitely apply this serum in the morning before your moisturizer and then make sure to apply SPF (very important). You can also apply this at night, but it’s most important to apply during the day. I don’t usually apply a Vitamin C at night (I like to use different serums for nighttime use), but if this is the only one you have, then you can definitely apply it at night.
Finally, to round out the routine, apply the Multi Correxion Revive + Glow Gel Cream (C$43.99). This moisturizer gives skin 24-hour hydration, as well as boosted radiance and a more plump complexion. The formula is a gel-cream hybrid and won’t leave you with a greasy feeling. After time you’ll notice more luminous skin that looks brighter and tighter.
You can use this moisturizer both morning and night. I like using it in the morning since I have a more heavy-duty moisturizer for nighttime use already. For night time use, RoC also has the Revive + Glow Night Serum Capsules, which is a more potent serum with 20 per cent pure Vitamin C. I didn’t receive these to try, but if you are looking for something more serious to up your Vitamin C game, then I would look into these.
Overall, whether you use this regimen or not, adding in Vitamin C to your skincare routine is a must. Vitamin C is such a necessary part of skincare and if you are in your mid-to-late 20s and early 30s, then I would highly recommend looking into picking up a Vitamin C product for you. The great thing about RoC is it is more affordable than other lines out there and is easy to find since you can grab it at the drugstore.
