White hot: Maybelline Vivid Hot Lacquers swatches + first impressions

So the Internet world is abuzz right now with Maybelline’s Super Stay Matte Ink liquid lipsticks (which I reviewed a couple weeks back), and although those definitely deserve the major hype, the drugstore brand also has another major lip collection out at the moment.

There is a ton of new products released from Maybelline for fall and one of which are the new Color Sensational Vivid Hot Lacquer Lip Glosses, which follow up to the Vivid Matte Liquid lipsticks that were released last year I believe.

I have previously reviewed the Vivid Matte Liquid lipsticks and although I do think they give you major colour payoff (in some fun colours as well), they were too creamy for my liking (if I’m going to do matte, I want those suckers to dry down). The new Maybelline New York Color Sensational Vivid Hot Lacquer Lip Glosses are a high-impact lip gloss this time around and available in 12 shades from nudes to reds to even a blue and black. These come in a glass tube (it’s actually really nice packaging) and colour goes on super pigmented and glossy. They are quite sticky at first, but they do dry down and stay a little tacky.  Colour is pretty long wearing for a gloss.

I received 11 of the 12 shades and was impressed with the colour range on these. There are some gorgeous nudes, one pink, one red/orange, and a lot of darker, bolder colours, perfect for fall. Looking for a deep purple lipgloss that looks black? Maybelline has you covered.

The consistency on these are quite thicker than a traditional gloss. They kind of remind me of MAC Lipglasses, both in how they feel when applied, as well as how they look. The colour is bold, however, I did find that for the darker colours, they get quite patchy. It was hard to apply the deep purple or the blue and make it look smooth (not to mention the fact that it was tough to apply them within the lines of my lips since gloss tends to slide around). For these darker colours, although you can wear them by themselves, I highly recommend just layering them over a lipstick of a similar shade, as it would make wearing the colour so much easier.

After a few hours of wear these do tend to stain the lips and lose their lustre, but it’s not a bad look that you need to reapply right away. Overall, I would stick with the lighter shades since I found them to be a little more wearable, however, I do like the fact that there is a unique shade range in here, so there’s a colour for everyone.

Into the rainforest: The Body Shop new Spa of the World and Amazonian Savour products

One of my summer musts? A moisturizer of course!

I’ve never really been much of a nighttime moisturizer kinda gal. I have a couple on my desk at work since I get dry hands and of course I apply some cream to my face morning and night, but I’ve never really been into applying a moisturizer at night before bed. I recently reviewed some of the Rodial and Nip & Fab toning creams, and ever since then I’ve been applying them every night.

I’ve been huge fan of The Body Shop for a while now and aside from the amazing scents they have in their collections they release some awesome products as well. As part of their Spa of the World collection, new for this year are some firming lotions (perfect for bathing suit season). First up, if you’re into applying self tanner or getting spray tans, an exfoliator is a must. The brand’s exfoliating scrubs are awesome since they are both creamy and coarse, really allowing you to get rid of those dead skin cells and providing moisture after the shower. The French Grape Seed Scrub (C$32) contains grape seeds, which are known for their high polyphenol content, a powerful antioxidant known to firm skin. Apply this product in the shower prior to self tanning application for an even tan.

To keep the colour on your skin, make sure to moisturize often! I’ve been switching out my toning lotions for their new Ethiopian Green Coffee Cream firming body cream (C$36). Like the name says, this contains caffeine, which brands often use in their moisturizer to refine, firm and tone. I have some of their Spa of the World lotions from past collections and the older ones are thicker moisturizers, whereas this one is a little thinner, really super refreshing on the skin and absorbs quickly.

Other items in their new Firming range are the Thai Market Lime Firming Oil and the Indian Turtle Massager.

The Body Shop Amazonian Saviour Multi-Purpose Balm

Also new this summer is the Amazonian Saviour Multi-Purpose Balm (C$15), which is great for reviving dry skin, skin marks, and even tattoos. This multi-tasking beauty product is made from 100 per cent natural-origin ingredients and is enriched with community trade babassu oil and beeswax. The texture of this particular product is very waxy and at first I thought it would have the consistency of something like Rosebud Salve, my holy-grail must-have beauty product, however, it’s definitely a thicker balm, as opposed to one with a petroleum jelly feel.

I don’t have tattoos so I can’t say how well this works on reviving them, however, this balm did feel awesome on dry patches and dried down nicely.

I’m still using up my past Body Shop Spa of the World products and have been enjoying incorporating these in my routine. If you have your summer tan already established I would look into incorporating a moisturizer into your routine to lengthen the longevity of it. Pair that with one that contains caffeine and a scrub designed to get rid of dead skin cells, these products are a must.

Have you tried any of The Body Shop Spa of the World products?

Splash proof: Make Up For Ever Aqua XL Ink Liner and Color Paint

Ah yes, summertime. Hot weather, pool days, time spent at the beach… What does this all have in common? Getting wet.  Sweat, water, etc. etc.

Since racoon eyes are so not cute, usually I’ll reach for waterproof makeup if I feel the need to look extra fine at the pool or if I’m spending lots of time outside. I remember this one day in Thailand at the beginning of the year when it was so unbearable outside and my makeup was running all down my face. It was not cute.

Luckily, Make Up For Ever has released some new Aqua XL products to their lineup to save the day when it comes to wearing makeup poolside.  New to the line are the Aqua XL Color Paint and the Aqua XL Ink Liner.

Make Up For Ever Aqua XL Colour Paint and Ink Liner

The Aqua XL Color Paints (C$31 each) are a blendable, ultra-pigmented cream shadow with waterproof wear and a 24-hour staying power.  There are 20 shades available, ranging from mattes to iridescent to lustres. They are a cream formula which dry down for waterproof, long-lasting wear. You can wear them as a liner, shadow, or base under the rest of your eye looks.

I received the shade I-80, iridescent pink beige, since I wanted to use this as a base or just to have something on the lids to jazz up my summer look. The colour is a beautiful frosty pink that is on the nude side, making it perfect to complement any colour.  The product comes housed in a squeeze tube with an angled applicator, allowing you to either apply the colour with a brush or with your fingers.  You can either apply it lightly for a slight wash of colour, or go in with a heavier hand for a more noticeable look.

Once you apply these, they do dry down quickly. I have used it for both a base and by itself. When by itself, it did hold up well, however, faded after a few hours. As an eyeshadow base, it held the shadow on top quite nicely.

The Aqua XL Ink Liners (C$30) are a waterproof, smudge proof, and long-lasting liquid eyeliner that promises 24-hour staying power, even after a day of swimming. These are available in 15 shades and a variety of different formulas (matte, metallic, diamond, and lustre). The felt-tip allows you to precisely apply the product to your lids.

I got the colour D-60 Diamond Brown since I love wearing brown liquid liners. I find brown to be less harsh (especially for daytime wear) for blue eyes. The colour went on quite nicely after a few strokes, but I find brown colours to be a little more patchy when you apply them in general. The formula dried down on my lids, and although it’s a diamond formula, I didn’t find it to be very sparkly at all. It was a nice finish. The liner itself also isn’t too wet, it applied exactly where I wanted it and it set rather quickly. Although I didn’t try it out for 24 hours, the liner held up very well throughout the day.

I’ve alway been a huge fan of Make Up For Ever products and their Aqua XL line. They are always the products I reach for when I’m spending the day outside or by the water since I know they will hold up quite well. I know summer is half over (I hate to say it!), but if you have a lot of pool or beach days coming up, I would look into purchasing some of these.  Aside from the neutral shades, the liners and the paints also come in a variety of fun, bright colours like turquoise, lavender, yellow, green, etc.
