Case of the blues: Budget-friendly and budget-blasting blue eyeliners

title blue

With the snow finally melting and weather getting warmer, I have been rocking one of my favourite summer trends, blue eyeliner along the lower lashline.

I have done a few looks using this technique on my blog and I absolutely love it.  It creates a pop of colour to any look and is so fresh and fun for the summertime.  Rock it during the day, at the beach, or at night – really anywhere!

There are a few ways you can achieve it; either with a wet eyeliner brush and electric blue eyeshadow, or with eyeliners.  I have a few different eyeliners that I’ve done it with and they range from drugstore to department store, so therefore you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg to create it.

Splurge! Lancome Kohl in Love eyeliner in Jade Crush (C$24)

lancome

This electric-blue beauty glides on your lids and leaves you with vibrant colour that lasts all day long.  This eyeliner is probably my favourite of the three because it’s oh so creamy and the colour is just perfect for spring and summer (plus it’s waterproof, so you can rock it at the beach and pool and it’s not going to budge).

Note, this colour came out in their spring line, check your Lancome counter to see if they still have it (I’m not sure if it’s limited edition or permanent).

Save! Rimmel London ScandalEyes Shadow Sticks in Tempting Turquoise (C$6.99)

This one is a double-whammy because it acts as a liner, eyeshadow, and eyeshadow base.  The colour is a vibrant turquoise that provides a high-shine and luminous finish.  Rimmel also makes a turquoise liner in their ScandalEyes Waterproof Kohl Kajal liners that is also as radiant.

Save! Rimmel London Special Eyes Precision Eye Liner Pencil in Azure

This blue isn’t as vibrant and bold as the first two but it’s a good alternative for those who want to rock the trend but want a toned-down, more conservative version of it.  This liner isn’t as creamy at the Lancome version, but it’s quite easy to work with and it does glide on.

Whether you choose to save or splurge, rocking the blue eyeliner trend is easy.  Blue may be a scary colour at first, but once you learn how to wear it, it can create a fun look.

For a different pop of colour, layer the blue over top of your black winged liner.  There are numerous ways you can rock it!

The Lash Diaries: Almay One Coat Triple Effect mascara

title mascara

Like just nail polish, I consider myself a mascara snob.  I don’t typically use drugstore mascaras because I used to have eyelash extensions so once I gave that up I didn’t mind spending a lot of money on a good mascara.

I received the Almay mascara last week and to be honest, didn’t have high expectations for it.  I was sure it performed well, but I haven’t ever tried anything from Almay, plus I haven’t really seen or read any blog posts about it.

From Almay:

Get fuller, longer, curvier lashes in one coat for 100% pure impact. The patented triple-action gel formula instantly builds, extends and sculpts your lashes. Triple impact brush wraps mascara evenly around every lash in one smooth application. Gently formulated with aloe and vitamin b5 to help keep lashes conditioned. Extra-gentle, non-irritating formula.

brush

Going in with no expectations for this, I can say that I was pleasantly surprised by the results I got with this product.  The brush is spiral so it can get in there and coat every lash and leave behind a sufficient amount of product.

This mascara left my lashes looking long, full and dark. Now, with that being said, there were some pitfalls with it.  I found my lashes to be quite stiff, and I found that product kept getting onto my eyelids which was super annoying. That happens to me often with mascara, however, it happened a lot with this product, so that was quite irritating to clean up.

no mascara one coat two coats

Overall I am satisfied with this mascara and it’s quite affordable at only C$6.68 at Wal-Mart.  If you are curious about this one already, give it a try, it may surprise you!

Have you tried Almay’s One Coat Triple Effect mascara?  What were your thoughts?

Please note, I was sent this mascara by PR.  All opinions are my honest own.

Topbox April 2013 (Regular box)

topbox title

Special for Earth month, this April’s Topbox came in their recycled packaging. Unfortunately, this was the only thing “earthy”, but hey, you know, they tried.

Just like the last few months, Topbox subscribers had the choice of choosing a Prive box, which consisted of Elizabeth Arden, Aveda, or Pure + Simple, or a regular box.  None of the Prive ones appealed to me so I chose to be surprised and chose the regular one.

Here’s what I got:

  • Boxx Cosmetics travel-sized contour brush ($34)
  • Elizabeth Arden All Gone Eye and Lip Makeup Remover (50 ml, 100 ml retails for $24)
  • KMS California Free Shape Quick Blow Dry spray (30 ml, 200 ml retails for $18.75)
  • Michael Todd True Organics Tropical Fruit Enzyme Exfoliant Scrub (30 ml, 100 ml for $18)

Aside from the makeup remover (I have enough remover to last a lifetime), I really like what I got.  I threw the scrub and blow dry spray into my gym bag to use there.  I always like receiving makeup brushes, so I’m happy to receive the contour brush (plus, it retails for $34 so it’s a total score).

I used the blow dry spray and scrub on the weekend after my workout on Saturday and loved both products.  My hair did dry quite quick surprisingly, so I was super impressed with the spray.  Same with the scrub, which was a lot smoother than I expected, plus the smell of papaya was amazing.

Overall I’m happy with the assortment of products I got this month.  Each product was in a generous size so I will be getting some good use out of this stuff.

What did you get in your Topbox for April?
