Velvet lips: YSL Beauty Tatouage Couture Velvet Cream Liquid Lipstick

You guys know I love a good matte liquid lipstick.  I love the colour payoff, the longevity, and the way it makes my lips look. The thing I don’t like? The way my lips feel.

If you are like me and love a good matte liquid lipstick but hate the dry feeling, then you may want to look into YSL Beauty’s new Tatouage Couture Velvet Cream lipsticks (C$49).

Available in 12 shades, these liquid lipsticks are a matte lip stain with a velvet finish that will coat your lips in rich colour, last all day, and feel comfortable to wear.

These apply via a unique applicator which is square in shape and fits the shape of your lips comfortably thanks to its sharp edge.  The formula is very comfortable and glides on the lips, staying on all day and giving you a full-coverage finish.  This applies colour in one stroke and truthfully, feels very luxe. The product is nice on the lips thanks to the emollient oil cream base in the formula. Sure, at $49, they are pricey for a lipstick, but I can tell you that they definitely feel like a very expensive product.

YSL sent me four shades to try out, three reds and a nude. I do have to say that the nude isn’t really something that I would call a nude, as it still has a more pink/red undertone, but I think that if you have a deeper skin tone than I do, then it would look more like a nude.

Although I don’t wear a lot of reds, I actually did quite enjoy how these looked on. The colour is very much a velvet texture, both in feel and look.  They went on very creamy and stayed creamy throughout the day. As such, I would definitely recommend these.

Overall, I really loved these YSL lipsticks. As I’ve said in the past, I’ve always had a thing for their lipsticks in general, so I knew that these would be a something that I would enjoy from the get-go.  The only thing is I wished that they had more of a colour range. I mean, do we really need 12 different shades of reds? How about a bright pink? A true nude? A purple? A pinky-nude?  I feel like brands really focus their shade range on reds and truthfully, even when I was swatching these, I felt like there wasn’t much difference between the colours.

If you are looking for a comfortable matte liquid lipstick, then I would take a look into these. Again, they are pricey, but the quality is there for these and I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with the result you get from wearing them.

Hair affair: Three products you need to try this season

I finally took out my extensions last week.

After a year and a half of wearing them it was actually quite nice to have a lighter-feeling head, to be able to run my hands through my hair, and to have more time in general since it takes way less now for my hair to dry and style it.

And so with that I’m actually quite excited to bust out my styling products since I kinda feel like I have a new head of hair (when in reality I just have less of it). I have a ton of styling products but I always love getting new ones since can you ever really have too many hair products? The answer is always no, friends.

If you are looking for some new styling products and want to up your haircare game this season (even if we can’t really do much with our hair cause of COVID), then keep reading…

Hair products from Head & Shoulders, Joico, and Kerastase Head and Shoulders Supreme Exfoliating Scalp Scrub

Head & Shoulders Supreme Exfoliating Scalp Scrub Treatment

Okay, so the first thing I couldn’t wait to do when I washed my hair for the first time without extensions is to use Head & Shoulders’ new Supreme Exfoliating Scalp Scrub Treatment (C$8.97). This is a product that you actually use before your shampoo and conditioner and works the same way as a facial scrub in that is helps to rid your skin of product build up and dead skin cells.

Wet your hair and then work this onto your scalp to detoxify it and let it breathe. The formula is infused with Vitamin E and argan oil, making it very gentle on the skin and prepping it for the rest of your haircare routine.  Like I said, start with this product first and then go in with your shampoo and conditioner.

I love this scrub because it’s truly something that I’ve never seen before. I use a facial scrub at least once a week to refresh my skin, so it makes total sense that we should have something like that for our scalp too.  You may not be aware, but dry shampoo (which we’ve all been using lots of) leaves a lot of build up so it’s good to use something that will allow you to go in there and detoxify the area and let your scalp breathe and stay healthy. I also suffer from dry scalp and psoriasis runs in my family so this has definitely come in handy and will continue to come in handy during the colder months when I suffer the most from flakes and dry patches.

Joico Zero Heat styling product

Joico Zero Heat Air Dry Styling Creme

Since I have nowhere to go and no one to see, I haven’t been using a lot of heat on my hair lately. Because of that, Joico’s new styling product actually came at the perfect time.

The Zero Heat Air Dry Styling Creme (C$25.40) is available in two formulas, one for thick hair and one for fine/medium hair.  Apply this creme to damp hair for long-lasting, air-dried style with no frizziness. This product helps to enhance the hair’s natural texture, reduces your drying time, provides 24-hour humidity control (perfect for summer), boosts shine, and feels natural in your locks with no sticky residue.

The formula includes flexible polymers to create a flexible hold to define natural texture and give you long-lasting style retention, as well as rosehip oil, which is full of antioxidants, vitamins, and Omega acids. It helps hair look and feel healthy, hydrated, and shiny.

Joico has split this product into two different versions, one for thick hair and the other for fine/medium. Truthfully I’m not sure what the difference is, but now that I’m extension-free, I have been using the Fine/Medium version of it. Joico also recommends to scrunch the hair for some added texture. I just applied it and let my hair do its thing, but I will say that I feel like my hair dried faster and I didn’t have to battle any frizziness once it was dry.

Kerastase Genesis Defense Thermique styling product

Kerastase Genesis Defense Thermique Anti-Hair Fall Care

Okay, so since I’m using to have thick hair thanks to extensions, now that they are out, I feel like my hair is so thin.  I started my extensions journey with tapes and although I now use hand tieds, I do feel like there was some damage from when I would get my tapes removed.  In case you’re not familiar with the removal process, basically the stylist sprays this adhesive remover on the tape and then pulls the two tapes apart. Some are better than others, but this process can definitely be painful.

Anyways, since I’m now nourishing my hair and treating her like the queen she is, Kerastase’s new Genesis Defense Thermique Anti-Hair Fall Treatment (C$49) has come at the perfect time.

This spray is for weakened hair which is prone to falling out due to breakage.  Spray this on damp hair after a wash for anti-breakage protection and optimal hydration without any frizziness or heaviness. The formula is enriched with Edelweiss Native Cells and ginger root to hydrate, reinforce, and protect the hair from heat and styling.

I use a lot of styling products after the shower and truthfully, a lot of Kerastase products lately. There is a whole line dedicated to anti-hair fall, so if you are looking for something really heavy-duty, then I would suggest investing in this line to help with hair breakage. There are so many different styling products out there, so I really love the idea of this one and I feel like it could benefit most people.

Although it was sad to get my extensions removed, I’m actually quite looking forward to styling my hair and really taking care of it and nourishing it for when they are reinstalled again. If you have any favourite styling products which you feel like I should try out, please let me know in the comments!

Colour capture: Avon GlimmerKiss Liquid Lipsticks

Looking for a liquid lipstick with a hint of shimmer? Take a look at Avon’s new GlimmerKiss Liquid Lipsticks (C$14).

Available in four shades, Avon’s new liquid lipsticks are available in four shades and are a silky smooth gel cream formula that is comfortable to wear and give you a sparking look.

I was actually quite surprised with the colour choices in this line. There’s a champagne metallic nude (Sand Opal), sparkly red (Ruby), a fuchsia (Violet Sapphire) and a vampy dark purple (Amethyst).  These apply quite opaque on the lips and leave them looking shimmery and metallic.

This formula is very lightweight and is a silky-smooth gel-cream consistency.  Although they do go on quite bold, it is a pretty buildable colour, so you can either layer it on for a more intense look or apply one coat for something more faint.

I did find the wear to be long lasting, however, in general, bolder colours tend to wear a little in the inner part of the mouth as you go about your day (eating, drinking, etc.), so I do recommend holding onto these for some quick touch ups.

Overall, I wouldn’t say to run out and grab these. They do the trick and are very pretty on the lips, however, I wish there were more shades and more lighter colours as opposed to bright, bold shades.
