Under the sea: Tarte Rainforest of the Sea collection

Tarte Title

Have you seen Tarte’s new collection yet?!

This summer collection has been making moves across the blogosphere lately, and with good reason.  Tate’s Rainforest of the Sea collection includes 19 products, everything from brushes to eyeshadow and highlight palettes, a foundation, skincare, and so much more. Best of all, it’s housed in the most eye-catching packaging. Seriously, if you haven’t seen the stands yet in Sephora, stop what you’re doing, go to your nearest Sephora store and check it out.

Now although it has a summer/marine feel to the whole thing, the name actually stems from the ingredient list. According to Sephora, Tarte literally explored the depths of the ocean in order to source ingredients that drench skin in hydration. What they came up with is the Rainforest of the Sea complex, which is a proprietary blend of algae and marine flower extracts. If you take look at the product offerings in the collection it’s pretty clear that it’s all about glowing skin. Dewy, radiant skin, as if you came straight from the ocean.

Tarte products

The two stars of the collection are definitely the Rainforest of the Sea Water Foundation and the Skin Twinkling Lighting Palette.  The Water Foundation (C$47) is available in 12 shades and is a lightweight full-coverage hydrating foundation. It promises a wear of 12 hours and contains 20 per cent water to hydrate dry skin, while also masking redness, dark spots, and uneven skin tone. You apply it via a few drops from the dropper on a sponge or brush and then buff into the skin for a smooth, radiant finish.

The Rainforest of the Sea Skin Twinkling Light Palette (C$50) is a highlighting trio palette with three universal shades for highlighting, strobing and perfecting. There are two highlights (Sunlight and Moonlight) in here, a champagne colour and a soft lilac, as well as Filtered Light shade, which is a setting powder that brightens and corrects.  To me, it seems like the Filtered Light shade is similar to the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palettes, which I apply over foundation for truly perfect skin.

Swatches of foundation Highlight palette

The foundation paired with the lighting palette truly give you amazing skin. I’ve been wearing these non-stop and I’ve had so many people commenting on how amazing my skin looks.  And the funny thing is that most of the comments have come from people in my fitness class, therefore after an hour of sweating.  Yes folks, my skin still looks amazing and flawless after working out.

Tarte also offers a couple different lip products in this line.  Their Rainforest of the Sea Drench Lip Splash Lipsticks (C$26 each) are available in 12 shades, everything from a bright orange to a hot pink to deep purple.  I received the colours Top Down, a poppy coral, and Bonfire, a blackberry. These are matte lip shades but ultra creamy at the same time (a rarity!). The vibrant lip formula, which goes on opaque, helps firm, treat, and protect your lips while providing intense hydration and hiding the appearance of fine lines.

They are long wearing, which is great since you really don’t get a lot of product in the tube (see image below). At that price point and considering how big the tube is, I feel like Tarte could have put more product in there, but if you don’t mind the fact that you aren’t getting a lot, they are an amazing formulation (matte lipstick that’s comfortable to wear? Yes, please!).

Lipstick bullet Top Down Bonfire

They also offer the Rainforest of the Sea Quench Lip Rescue (C$23 each), which is available in four shades (I got the colour Nude). Don’t let the colours fool you because they are quite sheer (they are meant to be worn as a balm). These help prevent signs of aging while delivering intense hydration and soft colour. The tinted lip balm contains essential extracts and oils to help restore the appearance of your lips’ softness, moisture and elasticity that’s reduced over time. These go on super smooth and glossy, and if you are into balms, I highly recommend checking them out since they are so comfortable to wear (I was very surprised by these and it’s just a glorified lip balm).

Nude

I can’t think of the last makeup collection that has impressed me so much (okay maybe I can, the Sephora x Minnie Mouse collection), but everything from here is just so amazing. And let’s not forget about the gorgeous packaging. The blue! The purple! The chevron! The ombre! I just can’t. Seriously, run to Sephora (or Sephora online) and pick up a few of these gems, you won’t be disappointed!

This doll needs a vacation: My vacay must-haves!

Title Two days ’til Mexico!

Although I’m fortunate to travel quite often, very rarely is it for vacation.  Also, when I travel, it’s often to big cities or smaller areas that aren’t typical tourist hotspots. On Sunday I’ll be jetting off to Cancun, Mexico to spend a few days just relaxing, eating, drinking, tanning and swimming, and I couldn’t be more excited.

My boyfriend and I planned this trip about a month ago and since then I’ve been strategically thinking of what I want to bring. I’ve already made a few stops at Forever 21 to pick up some beach essentials (a new bathing suit and a floppy sun hat), but since I’m a beauty junkie, I’ve put a lot of thought into what I want to bring cosmetic-wise. And let’s not forget the pre-Mexico prep.

So here, dear readers, is my list of must-have items for a sunny vacation..

Before vacay

Pre-vacation prep

An absolute must is hair removal. Make sure you book a waxing or sugaring appointment a couple days before you jet off. And I’m not talking legs here (I just shave my legs); since I plan on spending the majority of time in minimal clothing and a bathing suit, booking a brazilian is a must.

For facial hair, I’ve been plucking and shaping my brows forever, however, I’ve been treating my upper lip with the Tria Beauty Hair Removal Laser 4X, which has considerably reduced the hair in that area, so I don’t have to worry about a pesky girl-stache.

For nails, I’m planning on wearing press-on nails, which is something I often do when I travel. I don’t like bringing nail polish with me in case it opens during the flight (and not to mention the drying time), so instead I love using press-on nails. I love these tropical ones by Kiss Nails, and although these were from last year, they also have many other beautiful designs as well.  For the toes, I often go for a pedicure before a vacation (especially a beach or pool-filled one).

Finally, since I don’t tan that well I like going for a spray tan or a self-tanning mousse I apply myself. I teamed up with OrganicTan Winnipeg for one of their airbrush tans (and their SunnaSmile teeth whitening treatment for a pearlescent smile). If I don’t go for a spray tan, I’ll often either apply a self tanner, such as Vita Liberata or St. Tropez a few nights in a row prior to takeoff.

From the perfect foundation (with SPF!) to a waterproof mascara, here are some items making the flight over to Cancun with me.

  • Smashbox Camera Ready BB Water Broad Spectrum SPF 30 (for day)
  • Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Water Foundation (for night)

Seeing green! Three superfood items that are good for you, inside and out! Plus a giveaway!

Superfood title

With the spring weather finally warming up, I think we can all say we’re on the same page here – bikini body season is coming up. It’s time to start cutting down on processed foods, sugary substances, and eat cleaner.

I’ve actually been steering my food choices lately into more healthier options. I try not the eat process foods full of sodium and instead opt for items that are more clean and just better for my body overall.  Although I haven’t seen a huge change in weight, I have noticed that I’ve been way less bloated, I feel happier, and more alert.

Not only should we be watching what we put in our bodies, but also what we put on them.  Since this is a beauty blog, I get to try hundreds of new products.  Obviously these products are made up of chemicals and ingredients that I have no idea what they do, nor most times, how to pronounce them.  I’m not saying that I’m going all organic, but it’s nice to sometimes use products that are made from natural ingredients.

Vegan Proteins

Since I’m always working out (I teach fitness classes aside from blogging and my full-time gig), having enough protein to restore my muscles is important.  I got the opportunity to try out the Fermented Vegan Proteins+1 recently, which includes protein powders and bars. Vegan proteins have gained popularity recently with health-conscious consumers, but have been known to produce side effects, including digestive distress and bloating. Knowing that, Genuine Health came out with Fermented Vegan Proteins+, which includes non-GMO and non-allergenic ingredients. The ingredient list includes hemp seeds, yellow pea kernels (which are easily digested and low-allergen), quinoa sprouts (which are a strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory), mung bean sprouts (rich in vitamins and minerals, as well as anti-inflammatory), and alfalfa (rich in chlorophyll and high in fatty acids). There are no anti-nutrients included, which commonly cause digestive issues like gas, bloating and pain.

recipe

Since it’s a protein powder, you can drink it as is, add it in a smoothie, or create a yummy snack or meal (pancakes, waffles, etc.). They also offer protein bars (keep reading to win a box!) which are formulated to be easily digested and maximize protein absorption. The benefits include performance, weight management, digestive health, and fermentation. The flavours include dark chocolate almond, double chocolate chip, peanut butter chocolate, and lemon coconut. Each bar includes 13g of fermented dietary protein per serving.

Nip Fab

For the exterior of the body, UK brand Nip+Fab has recently introduced their Kale Fix line, which includes a range of three products packed with superfood ingredients kale and watercress to reinvigorate the skin with vitamins to protect against free radical damage and soften and hydrate dry skin. The range includes makeup removing pads, a clay mask and a moisturizer.

My favourite item from the line was the mask, as you only had to wear it for five to 10 minutes. It goes on clear and then dries to a slight clay texture.  You could totally wear this to sleep since it’s not messy at all and doesn’t change colour that much. After washing it off I would apply the moisturizer to help soften my skin.

The Body Shop hemp

Finally, since I seem to always have dry hands, I’ve been loving The Body Shop’s Hemp Hand Protector, which softens and protects hands. It contains community trade hemp seed oil, which is one of the richest sources of skin-nourishing fatty acids in nature. In addition to hemp being good for you (hemp seeds contain the most balanced and richest natural single source of essential oils for human consumption), The Body Shop’s hemp is a ‘miracle’ crop for the environment, as it helps to regenerate the land between food crops, is four times more effective at capturing CO2 than trees and it uses no pesticides or herbicides at all. So therefore, not only is it good for you, but it’s great for the earth as well.

The Body Shop has a whole line dedicated to this miracle worker, including the new Hemp Rescue Balm, which is 100 per cent vegetarian and high recommend to hydrate elbows, hands, knees, knuckles, and feet.

Since health is so important, I teamed with the Genuine Health to give away a box of protein bars (12 in a box). Contest is open to Canadian residents and closes on May 9, 2016. Enter via the Rafflecopter below.

Good luck!
