Walk on the wild side: A Paradise City-inspired look for Boobyball 2016

title

Take me down to paradise city… 19 days until Boobyball Winnipeg and this year’s theme is the very colourful Paradise City!

In case you aren’t familiar with the wildest charity event of the year, Boobyball is the annual fundraising event for ReThink Breast Cancer, a Canadian charity that brings awareness to young adults concerned about and affected by breast cancer. ReThink is different from say, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and the Canadian Cancer Society, in that it’s targeted to the under-40 crowd, led by young and influential breast cancer supporters, and they throw events that you totally want to be seen at.

Boobyball, their annual flagship event, celebrates its 15th anniversary this year. The event, which started in Toronto and is now held in Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa, and Winnipeg, is one of the most coveted and high-profile fundraising events for young philanthropists in Canada, and has raised over $3.4 million for ReThink Breast Cancer (last year’s events hosted 3,100 young philanthropists and raised over $470,000 nationally). Every year there’s a theme (last year it was space, the year before it was circus) and this year is the jungle-inspired Paradise City.

final-1

2016 marks the third year the high-profile event is being held here in Winnipeg. Our Boobyball will be on October 22, whereas Toronto’s is October 14, Calgary’s is October 27, and Ottawa is October 28 (FYI October is breast cancer awareness month). The party will be held at the Fort Garry Hotel from 9 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. and tickets are available through their site for $115 each (with a $15 tax receipt). The ticket includes admission to the wildest party of the year, complimentary bar service, an amazing gift bag, and more.

In case you haven’t been to their site yet, it’s the raddest portal to get you in the spirit of what they’re all about. Boobyball Winnipeg reached out to me to come up with a Paradise City-inspired makeup, hair and nail look and I couldn’t wait to unleash my inner tiger and come up with something that reflects the theme of the party.

For this look, I wanted to keep it more wearable. Yes, I love wearing bold makeup sometimes, but I wanted to do something that kept to the theme, yet is something that was relatively easy to do and totally something most people can pull off. I did a neutral eye with a wash of green along the lower lash line and a teal in the waterline to make it pop.

final-4 steps 1. Fill in your brows then lay down an eyeshadow primer (I used Too Faced Shadow Insurance) from your lids to your eyebrows. With a medium orange colour, like Salted Caramel from the Too Faced Chocolate Bar palette, apply this colour lightly with a fluffy crease brush to your crease.

2. With a light cream shadow, like MAC Naked Lunch, apply this to your lid area.

3. With a matte brown, like MAC Soft Brown, apply this with a crease brush to your crease area. Go light and build the colour up.

4. Using the same brush and a darker matte brown, apply that over the other brown you just applied in your crease.  I used Triple Fudge from the Too Faced Chocolate Bar palette.

5. Line your upper lash line with a black liquid liner, winging it out. I used Rimmel London Color Precise Eyeliner in Black. After, apply mascara.

6. To up the ante, apply some false lashes. I used Kiss Ever EZ lashes with the Ever EZ Strip Lash adhesive.

7. With a white cream colour (like Too Faced’s White Chocolate), apply this to your brow bone to highlight.

8. For the lower lash line, first line with a green eyeliner. I used Make Up For Ever Aqua XL Eye Pencil in In-21 Iridescent Lagoon Green. Then, with a pastel green (like Make Up For Ever Aqua XL Eye Pencil in M-30 Matte Pastel Green) apply that to your waterline.

9. To finish up the look, apply a green shadow similar in colour to the eyeliner over where you put the liner along your lower lash line (I used Kat Von D Lemmy). After, some mascara to your lower lashes.

final-6

For the face, I used NARS Sheer Glow foundation, Kat Von D Lock It Concealer Creme, the NYX Cosmetics Contour and Highlight palette, Maybellline Face Studio Master Contour Duo and Face Studio Strobing Stick, and Becca Cosmetics Champagne Pop. For my lips I used Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick in Petal Pop, a bright pink.

For my hair, since leopard is forever on trend, I did braided “ears” on the top of my head and then curled the rest. These were super easy to do; do a half-up pony and then split it in hair to do pigtails. Braid the pigtails and then loop them around and bobby pin them in place. After, with a clipless curling iron, curl the lower portion and add some texturizing spray for some added volume (I used L’Oreal Professionnel Wild Stylers 60’s Babe texturizing spray), then hairspray it all to set.

nails

For the nails, first I applied Essie Gel Couture polish in Haute to Trot (a purple-pink colour), then once it’s dry, on the ring finger I did a cheetah pattern using the Sally Hansen I Heart Nail Art Striper in black and Formula X Full Strength nail polish in Let’s Do This, a majestic teal.  To create the cheetah pattern, first, using a dotting tool (I used one from the Sally Hansen I Heart Nail Art Tool Kit), dot the teal colour on your nail, making all the dots different sizes. Then with the black, carefully outline the tops and bottom of the teal circles.

For the middle finger I did a palm leaf using the teal and black. First, with the black striping polish, do one line from the bottom of your nail to just shy of the top, then along the line make some lines going up at an angle. Then, with a striping brush, gently paint on the teal in-between the black lines. For the index finger I did a stripe of silver glitter polish (Deborah Lippmann Today Was a Fairytale), then I did a line of black metallic studs (from the Sally Hansen I Heart Nail Art Studs Kit).

All you need? Revlon Eyes, Cheeks + Lip palette in Seductive Smokies

revlon-title One of the most exciting products I received last June at the London Drugs Fall Beauty preview was the Revlon Eyes, Cheeks + Lips palette. This guy is new for late summer and comes in a three different colour palettes (Berry in Love, Seductive Smokies, and Romantic Nudes) and contains six eyeshadows, a blush, and four liquid lip colours. The colours in the palettes are existing Revlon shades and curated together, so ideally it’s the only palette you need (for any makeup buff out there, obviously this wouldn’t be your only one, but if you’re new to makeup, it could be a stepping stone).

I received the palette in Seductive Smokies, which contains three blue-toned eyeshadows and three purple-toned shadows. As we know purples are great for blue eyes and blues are great for brown, so regardless of what colours eyes you have, the palette is great for you. This palette also contains a mauve-coloured blush, as well as two lipsticks (a pink and a red) and two glosses (a berry and a nude).

This guy has been sitting in my “needs to be reviewed” pile since I got it, but it’s been in the back of my mind forever since I love how much product you get in it. Like I said, if you are new to makeup, I think this is a great idea, since you pay one price (C$19.99 at London Drugs, but currently on sale for $14.99) and you get all these makeup must-haves.

revlon-open

I got to finally play around with it Wednesday night when the BF and I went to see the Book of Mormon playing here in Winnipeg. Unfortunately though, I was very disappointed with the quality of the palette.  Okay, keep in mind that I have a lot of makeup. My palette drawer is huge, meaning that I get to try out a lot of brands and formulas. Sure, some are more luxury brands that you can get at Sephora, but others are drugstore eyeshadows, some as affordable as even $8.99, and they have amazing pigment.  This one by Revlon just didn’t cut it.

I went with the purple side as I have blue eyes and when I started with the lightest colour, it barely gave me a wash of that neutral shade. I had to pack on the eyeshadow and even then, it wasn’t drool-worthy on the eyes. I chose to go with the darker colour in the crease, and although it did blend out, it was very sheer.  It reminded me of makeup that I used when I was a kid, certainly not something up to 2016 standards.

The blush went on quite well and I chose to apply the berry gloss for a sheer wash of colour. Overall, I didn’t love the palette, and for $20, I would say skip it, there’s way more amazing palettes out there, although they maybe won’t have a blush and lip options. Really though, if you were wearing this palette out, you probably wouldn’t carry it around with you anyways to reapply the lip colour, so instead invest in a good-quality eyeshadow palette (if you are looking for affordability, try ELF, it’s inexpensive and great quality) and maybe a Revlon lipstick (they have amazing lip products).

I was very disappointed that this didn’t live up to my standards, but let me know if you tried it out and if it worked for you!

Fall faves! Five beauty items you need for fall

title

Where did the year go? Seriously, I feel like we just cracked open that champagne celebrating 2016. Although it seems like this year is all but gone, I’m so excited it’s finally fall.  Autumn is my absolute favourite season; from everything pumpkin, to the cool weather, to the leaves changing, chunky sweaters, tall boots and leggings, and most of all, Halloween!  I just get so excited just thinking about it.

With the hemlines getting longer, the sun going down earlier, and the the colour palettes getting darker, it’s time to change up your beauty routine. Fall is all about dark lips, dramatic nails, musky scents, and lots of moisture.  Here are my top five beauty picks you need this season.

lips-and-nails

Bold nails

Summer calls for neons and brights, fall is all about darks and neutrals. Try a deep berry, black, taupes and darker-toned nudes. I have a few faves for the autumn season, Marc Jacobs Beauty Enamoured Hi-Shine Nail Polish in Blacquer (a creme shiny black), OPI Infinite Shine polish in Lincoln Park After Dark (creme dark eggplant purple) and You Don’t Know Jacques (a creme taupe).

Deep lips

A dark lip colour is a must for when the weather gets colder. Although I’ve forever been on a nude and baby pink kick, I’ve been loving deep berries lately. Sport the trend with Maybelline Color Sensational The Loaded Bolds in Midnight Merlot and Mauve It, both of which are very long lasting on the lips. I also have been loving Make Up For Ever Artist Rouge in C506, a dark purple, and Kylie Cosmetics liquid lipstick in Leo (this may have been LE for her bday collection, but try Kourt K, also a dark purple).

perfumes

Musky scents

Put away the fruity and floral, fall is all about dark, musky scents. Think spicy, tobacco, bergamot.. I’ve been loving Elizabeth & James Nirvana Bourbon, Rose and Black, The Body Shop White Musk (I love Red Musk for winter), and Thierry Mugler Angel (a forever favourite).

skincare

Supple skin

With the weather getting colder, that means you’ll need to really focus on your skincare. Cold, dry weather sucks the moisture out of your skin, and although we aren’t in the thick of it yet, it’s always good to take some precautions early.

For the body, I’ve been loving Mereadesso Beautiful Body Balm, which is a high-performance non-greasy all-over body balm. Not only does it dry fairly quickly, but it’s blended with eight vitamins and minerals, as well as 28 globally sourced botanical extracts.  It’s also good for cellulite and stretch marks.

For the face, I’ve been using the Lise Watier HydraForce Hydra-Protective Creme-Gel, which contains Gaspe algae extract, which guarantees global skin hydration, acting as a defensive shield against external aggressors. I pair that with Nip + Fab Dragon’s Blood Fix Serum, a lightweight serum that gives you instant moisture. It contains hyaluronic acid and velvet flower that work together for an intensive hydrating effect.  Skin feels comfortable and looks pumper, diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

mens

Smooth and supple men’s products

Finally, for all the men out there, shorten your shower time with the Jack Black All-Over Wash for Face, Hair and Body, which is a mild cleanser so your guy can use it all over. To keep that beard in check, try the Jack Black Supreme Cream Triple Cushion Shave Lather, which provides a luxe lather that lifts whiskers up, giving you a smooth, close shave. It contains a Triple Cushion technology with three protective layers of macadamia nut oil, glycerin, and soybean oil, it also has the skin treatments benefits of their Beard Lube technology, leaving skin soft, hydrate and refreshed.

I’m so excited to sport these trends with thick turtlenecks, tall boots and a grande PSL.  What are your favourite fall beauty trends?
