Smooth & sudsy: Three skincare lines you need for moisturized skin

Okay, so if there is one item I can never have too much of, it’s skincare. Although it may encapsulate a lot of different products, I tend to hoard moisturizers and body washes.

The way I think of it is that both of these items are staples. You need body wash, whether that’s a bar of soap or a liquid, no matter the price or brand, and you need a moisturizer, especially with the chilly Winnipeg weather.

Lately I’ve been trying out a bunch of different brands inside and outside my shower and really have been looking forward to shower time and bed time, when I apply my moisturizer.

Here are my current top three choices for fall…

Le Petit Marseillais Body Wash

Le Petit Marseillais Body Wash

Le Petit Marseillais is an iconic French body wash that launched 30 years ago but has been gaining traction here in Canada as of late. Available in five scents, this gel body wash gently cleanses your skin while the light and easy-to-rinse foam delivers an amazing fragrance.

You can find these in the drugstore, meaning that they are quite reasonable priced. I have the White Peach and Nectarine, as well as the Lavender Honey one, and find them both quite pleasant in the shower. These suds up nicely and leave my skin feeling fresh and refreshed. Plus, you know, the fact that they are French just adds that extra touch of fancy.

Glossier Body Hero

Glossier Body Hero Duo

I proclaimed my love for Glossier a month or so back on here, so when I saw that they came out with a body skincare line (and a powerful marketing campaign to go with it), I had to have it.

Inspired by oil cleansers and rich cream, Body Hero, available as a body wash and moisturizer, cleans, hydrates, and enhances skin. The Daily Oil Wash is made with a blend of seven oils that clean your body while also nourishing it.  The Daily Perfecting Cream is applied after the shower and dries down into your skin quickly so you don’t feel filmy. It also has light-reflecting particles, leaving you with an instant glowy sheen.

I really like the moisturizer from this line, however, as a gal who loves a body wash that soaps up, this one falls short.  Three pumps of the Daily Oil Wash into my loofa and I’m wondering if there is any product in there.  This doesn’t really suds up (it does slightly), which I guess makes sense since it’s an oil (it contains Coconut, Meadowfoam, Olive, and Soybean Oils; Sesame Oil; Grapeseed Oil; Sunflower Seed Oil; and Orange Blossom Neroli Oil). Both of these products also have that powdery deodorant smell to them, so if you don’t fancy that scent (I don’t mind it, but I certainly don’t love it), you may not like these. The Daily Perfecting Cream is awesome though since it doesn’t make you feel tacky and gross when you apply it. It dries down quite quickly, so you’ll have no problems getting dressed right out of the shower.

The Body Shop Vanilla Pumpkin line

The Body Shop Vanilla Pumpkin line

I was really excited to try out Body Hero, but I was even more excited to get my hands (and nose) on The Body Shop’s new Vanilla Pumpkin line.

Comprised of four items (body butter, hand lotion, shower gel, and shimmer mist), this line smells just like fall. Think of it as a PSL for your skin (just try not to actually eat the product).

I got the body butter, hand cream, and shower gel and have been sniffing — er using — them nonstop. Although I’m not really a huge fan of the texture of The Body Shop’s body butters since I find they don’t really dry down as fast as I would like them to, I’ve put that sentiment aside and have been slathering myself in this every night (well okay, I alternate between this and Body Hero). I also love the size of the hand lotion since it’s small enough to toss in a clutch, so you can have that vanilla pumpkin smell accompanying you everywhere you go.

I was never really that much into skincare in the past, but since so many amazing products are coming out with so many different benefits, it’s definitely my new jam. What are your favourite skincare items and brands?

Please note, I was sent these products from PR. All opinions are my own.

Life is a highway: A trip up the Sunshine Coast with Ford Canada

I’ve gotten some pretty amazing opportunities being a blogger.  Even though I mostly focus on beauty, I love doing lifestyle posts, including ones with Ford Canada (because who doesn’t love cruising around in cute cars?). About a month or so back I got invited to take part in their Western Drive program, where I would fly to Vancouver, hop in an SUV, catch a ferry, then make my way up the Sunshine Coast to the most stunning resort to relax and unwind.

If you watch my Instastories (shayna_apopofcolour), the trip happened last Thursday and Friday, where myself and 15 other bloggers from across Western Canada met up at the Fairmont Vancouver Airport before embarking on a road trip in beautiful B.C.  I was partnered up with Coal and Canary co-founder and new BFF Tom (they make amazing candles), and we drove a Ford Edge all the way up to our destination.

on BC ferry Smitty's Marina in Gibson's, BC

When we got to Vancouver it was cold and rainy, and luckily Tom volunteered to drive, so I could watch the sights of beautiful B.C. and man the GPS. After making it to the Horseshoe Bay ferry (which was also my very-first ferry ride) we departed towards Gibsons Landing where we made a pit stop at Smitty’s Oyster Bar where we ate so much seafood that I couldn’t wait to make it back to the car so I could relax in those comfy Ford Edge seats. Next, we drove to Roberts Creek where we did some light yoga on the pier, then had more goodies at a local cafe (seriously, we did so much eating). After that we hopped back into the SUVs and made our way to our final destination, the Painted Boat Resort.

Once we made it to the resort, we checked in and headed to our rooms, which were actually two-bedroom townhouses basically. Seriously, the accommodations were larger than my condo. Unfortunately we didn’t spend too much time in them, but there was no complaining since our next activity was a photography lesson with Jess Findlay.  Ford set up the SUVs all over the resort so we had the opportunity to walk around and take different shots.

So it turns out the SUVs are the fastest-growing segment globally and in Canada in automotives. They are super popular with baby boomers and millennials as they give you enough room for your gear and extra passengers. Since 2009, Ford is the top seller in SUVs in Canada and since they have a huge selection to choose from, there is truly an SUV for everyone. The Ford Edge that we drove is actually built right here at the plant in Oakville, Ontario, where they are shipped to more than 100 countries worldwide. That plant alone provides jobs to more than 4,000 people and they also build the Ford Flex in there as well. The Ford Expedition, which is a large SUV, will be coming out in the New Year, and the Echo Sport will be making it’s way here shortly as well for the first time in North America. It’s a smaller SUV, and to be honest, sounds like it’s right up my alley.

After our photography lesson, we had a few hours to chill before dinner time (yes, more eating), where we started off with prosecco and caviar tasting. After that we made our way upstairs for the main courses before heading outside for stargazing and s’mores making. After too much prosecco and way too many s’mores, this girl made her way to bed.

The next morning, we packed up our stuff, ate the most amazing buffet breakfast then switched up cars, where Tom and I got the Ford Explorer for the drive back.  I just had the Explorer last month so I was very familiar with it (the one we had was actually the one I had last month, it still remembered my Bluetooth). Although this SUV is kinda large for my taste (the Edge’s size was much more comfortable), I do love those massage seats (I believe this is the only Ford SUV that has the massage sets in it).

Although I’ve driven most of the Ford SUV lineup, I still get so excited for all the tech features that the cars offer. Since the Sunshine Coast has some steep roads, the SUVs really made the drive comfortable and the horsepower was way better than my Honda Civic (especially driving up those steep highways). I also loved the Blind Spot Information System, which has a cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping system, and adaptive cruise control. Even though I wasn’t driving, these features were super handy in case we got too close to other vehicles.

After a whirlwind two days, we finally made our way back to Winnipeg. I had so much fun doing this program and seeing beautiful B.C. I’ve been to Kelowna and Vancouver a ton of times, but it was so nice to take a ferry to one of the islands and really experience the beauty of the province (in case you didn’t know, Manitoba is quite flat).  A huge thank you to Ford Canada for inviting me on this trip and for making it so amazing. Check out their lineup of cars on their website.

Huge thank you to Ford Canada for inviting me on this trip. I did not receive compensation for this post, but Ford Canada did pay for all travel and accommodations.

Think pink: Five items that give back towards breast cancer research

Not only is October prime fall season, but it’s also breast cancer awareness month. This month you may notice that are are so many brands and products going pink as part of the international health campaign that’s organized by major breast cancer charities. The point is to increase awareness of the disease and raise funds for research into its cause and help prevent people from getting breast cancer by going for regular mammograms.

According to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, one in nine Canadian women is expected to develop breast cancer during her lifetime. One in four cancers diagnosed in women in Canada are breast cancer; there’s a one in 30 probability that a Canadian woman will die from breast cancer during her lifetime; the five-year survival rate for breast cancer is 87 per cent; and, it’s the second-leading cause of cancer deaths in women in Canada (lung cancer being the first).

Around seven years back I threw a fashion show for the CBCF, where my partner and I raised close to C$4,000.  I’m not gonna lie, throwing a fashion show takes a lot of work, so I’m more inclined to give back by purchasing products that give a percentage to breast cancer charities. For the past 25 years, the Estee Lauder Group of Companies have been giving raising funds for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) through offering special branded items with a portion of the proceeds going to the BCRF. This year, 12 of the companies have released special items that are pink themed and help support their mission to create a breast cancer-free world.

In case you didn’t know, Estee Lauder owns a ton of popular beauty brands, including Smashbox, MAC, Clinique, Bobbi Brown, Tom Ford, and much more.  I chose five of the items from their list that I feel would make a difference – both for breast cancer and for personal use.

La Mer Limited-Edition Creme De La Mer – C$120

La Mer is offering up a special edition of their iconic Creme de la Mer, a moisturizer that is known as being the caviar of skincare. Although I have yet to try it, I feel like this would give me the chance to finally take the plunge as $17 from the purchase price of this 15 ml bottle will go towards the BCRF (with a maximum donation of $53,000).

Estee Lauder Limited-Edition Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex II with Pink Ribbon Keychain – C$110

I actually use this serum every night and I’m almost out of it, so it was the perfect excuse to pick up a new bottle.

Apply this serum every night after your moisturizer for smooth, radiant, and younger-looking skin. This limited-edition pink bottle comes with a three-charm pink ribbon keychain that has a touch of blue in the design, representing the less than one per cent of men who are diagnosed with breast cancer.

Estee Lauder will donate 20 per cent of the suggested retail price from each bottle towards the BCRF.

Aveda Hand Relief Moisturizing Creme with Invigorating Rosemary Mint Aroma – C$34

Who doesn’t need a hand moisturizer in their bag, especially during the cooler fall months?

This limited-edition hand moisturizer features a pink cap and band and packs a serious punch when it comes to relieving hands of dryness. Four dollars from each purchase will go towards the BCRF with a maximum donation of $331,000 US until September 22, 2018.

Bobbi Brown Pink Peony Illuminating Bronzing Powder Set – C$70

A pink blush is a staple in every girl’s makeup routine, and this one, which comes in the most beautiful rosy pink shade, is universally flattering on all skin tones. Complete with a mini face blender brush, Bobbi Brown will donate $11 from the purchase price of this set, with a maximum donation of $90,000.

Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Water – C$39

Another staple in anyone’s makeup routine, if you are in the need for a new primer, take a look at this one.  This spray gives you the benefits of a primer with hydration thrown in, leaving you with the perfect base for flawless makeup.

Five dollars from the purchase price of this product will go to the BCRF, up to a maximum of C$20,000.

Honourable mention: Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion+ – C$49

One of my favourite products of all time, I remember when I was younger and I would always see this limited-edition version of my favourite moisturizer hit counters and I always wanted it because it featured cute little charms at the top.

Clinique has been releasing a limited-edition bottle of its cult-worthy Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion+ for years and this year the bottle is adorned with a Clinique key ring with four charms, including a breast cancer awareness pink ribbon.

Clinique is donating $10 from each 125 ml special bottle towards BCRF up to a maximum of $475,000 until January 31, 2018.

There are so many different brands relating products this month that go towards breast cancer research. If you use these products already, or have been dying to try them, I highly recommend picking up these limited-edition bottles.

Do you buy items that give proceeds to charities?
