Rainbow hair: Clairol Color Crave Hair Makeup

I swear ever since L’Oreal released Colorista, an at-home washout hair dye available in a range of pastel rainbow shades, it seems like more and more brands are jumping on the bandwagon.

I’ve tried Colorista a few times and was always happy and surprised by the results. I’m such a fan that I’ve even had a few people I know buy it and try it out due to my recommendation. Since I’m totally pro-coloured hair I was excited to hear that more brands are jumping on board and coming out with their own versions of at-home pastel colour.

New from Clairol is Color Crave, available as hair makeup and semi-permanent hair colour. The semi-permanent hair colour sounds very similar to their L’Oreal counterpart, in that it lets you dye your hair one of 11 different fun bright colours that last for 15+ washes. The difference with this version is that, unlike Colorista, which is for either blonde or brunette hair depending on the colour, the Clairol version is visible on any hair type, meaning that if you want to dye your brunette hair pink, now you can (whereas other brands limit this colour to just blondes). They also offer a bleach kit to give you a more vibrant look.

I haven’t tried out the semi-permanent colour, however, I did get my hands on the hair makeup. This stuff is temporary hair makeup that washes out after one shampoo. Available in six shades (Shimmering Rose Gold, Brilliant Amethyst, Brilliant Ruby, Shimmering Copper, Shimmering Bronze, and Shimmering Platinum), this product also works on both blondes and brunettes and all you simply do is paint it on, blow dry it, then you’re good to go. You apply it by squeezing the tube and the product is dispensed on a sponge applicator tip that you simply swipe on your hair.

I received Shimmering Platinum since I’m still very much digging the whole grey hair look. I recently went blonde so I thought I was the perfect candidate to try this out. I pulled it out last Friday and was so excited to give it a whirl, but instead I ended up with a mess of silver everywhere and a lack of colour in my hair.

Like I said, you apply this by squeezing the tube, which then dispenses the product on the sponge. The issue is that when you paint this on it tends to get other hairs caught up in it (if you want to do some highlights). I found that doing this myself it was a bit tricky as the silver ended up getting sprayed all over my counter, sink, mirror, hands, you name it. What I finally ended up doing was just placing a paper towel down, segregating the hair, and bending over while I painted it on a flat surface. I did use a comb to blow dry the pieces because otherwise I found they would get tangly or dried together, but by using the comb it actually brushed out the colour a little bit. I did see some slight silver in there, but honestly, I couldn’t even take an after photo because it was gone by the time I styled my hair the next morning (and I applied it at night right before going to bed).

Most of the promo photos I’ve seen for this product has shown the product being used on a braid or on styled hair. I think that it would work better that way since the hair is already fastened on the head (meaning that it won’t go flying and you can actually apply some pressure). I love this idea of this product, especially with Halloween coming up, but unfortunately the silver did absolutely nothing for me. I’m thinking a more pigmented colour, like the purple or rose gold, would be a better fit.

Have you tried out any of the Clariol Color Crave products? What were your thoughts?

Memory of scent: A scent journey with Pine-Sol Cleaner

Everyone relates certain feelings to scents. There’s been so many times where I smell something and say “it smells like Vegas”. Whether it’s coconut (because it reminds me of The Mirage) or Victor & Rolf Flowerbomb (where I would often wear the fragrance, and where I bought it for the first time), there are certain smells that remind us of certain times in our lives or fond memories.

My current favourite scent is anything pumpkin spice or vanilla, since one whiff of it instantly reminds me of fall. With the weather getting cooler, all I want to do is stay in, feel comfy in chunky knit sweaters, light my favourite candles, and just chill (with a loaf of pumpkin bread of course). Because of that, last weekend my boyfriend and I decided to do come canning and make some chili red pepper jelly with the chilis we were growing all summer. My boyfriend was manning the stove top, looked away for a second, and the liquid boiled over, onto the stove top and then onto the floor. Needless to say, not only did my smoke detector go off, but since the jelly contains a lot of sugar, my hardwoods were incredibly sticky as well (it was so gross).

Since I knew my Swiffer wasn’t going to cut it, I instantly remembered that I had some Pine-Sol and used it with water to mop my floors and get rid of that gross stickiness and help with masking that peppery scent in the air.

I had a few containers of Pine-Sol but was happy I used the Lavender Clean one since not only did it make my floors so much cleaner, but it made the air smell fresh and relaxing. Since lavender is a very calming scent, it made the whole fiasco of the red pepper jelly mess so much better since although my whole kitchen (and the air in my condo) was a disaster, mentally I didn’t feel like it was.

Although I also love the original scent of Pine-Sol (it reminds me of summer and camping), I’m also digging the Mandarin Sunrise one since it’s so energizing. There’s also a Lemon Fresh one and Spring Blossom, but if you ask a lot of people, they would probably say the original is their favourite. Pine-Sol is such a memorable scent for a lot of people (especially if they grew up with their parents using it to clean their homes). I can totally relate since any time I smell a certain of perfume of mine, it always brings back a memory or makes me feel like I’m there once again.

Pine-Sol flat lay

Although I’m not a huge fan of cleaning in general, after using Pine-Sol the other weekend I’m kinda tempted to do clean my whole living area just to get a whiff of that scent in the air. I think that whenever I smell it now I’m going to remember that disaster of a situation, which looking back at it now it’s just a funny memory.

What smells invoke a special moment for you?

Hit the books: Fall beauty must-haves from P&G Beauty

Okay so even though I haven’t been in school for seven years, I still get excited about back-to-school time. Although it’s pretty much October and B2S time has officially passed, that doesn’t mean my excitement gets any less.  Back to school also means that fall is officially here and thus cozy sweater time, Ugg boots, and leggings all day every day is back.

So is a more thorough skincare, haircare, and teeth routine.

P&G Beauty was super awesome and sent me a backpack full of products to get me into the pumpkin spice – err fall – season and it included some goodies that I’ve been legit wanting to try.

I’ve always been a huge fan of Olay’s skincare (their Luminous moisturizer is my current daily moisturizer), so I was super excited to try out the new Olay Age Defying Advanced Hydrating Gel Moisturizer, which includes skin conditioners to boost hydration and lock-in moisture. This lightweight and oil-free moisturizer is perfect for normal to dry skin and quickly absorbs into it once you put it on. As a result, it delivers up to 24 hours of intense hydration without clogging pores, perfect for those cold, dry air weather we often experience as we head into the fall months.

I’ve recently had a dry patch along my lower lash line so I was excited to try out the Olay Eyes Deep Hydrating Eye Gel. I swear by eye creams, as they should be a staple in your face routine morning and night. This one instantly hydrates your eyes through its cooling gel formula that also plumps up the delicate skin area under your eyes. Its fast-absorbing formula means you don’t have to wait for it to dry down before applying your moisturizer over top.

Onto another area of your skin… since I work out a lot, deodorant is a must for me. I’ve been using the Tarte Cosmetics vegan deodorant, and although its packaging is uber cute, it’s just not cutting it for me. I’ve often found that vegan deodorant – and it doesn’t matter the brand – makes me smell even worse than if I wasn’t wearing any deodorant at all. I’ve seen the Secret Fresh Invisible Spray in store and was curious about it, so I was super pumped to receive it in the backpack. This spray-on deodorant is perfect for touchups on the go, before the gym, or even if you’re wearing something dark (say goodbye to those pesky white marks). Best of all, it smells amazing (I got the scent Ooh La La Lavender).

Another big item for me due to my gym obsession is dry shampoo. I’ve talked about Herbal Essences Bio:Renew dry shampoo a couple times (heck, I’ve even brought it on TV appearances as well, it’s that good), so I was so excited to learn they have a new volume formula. Since I work out pretty much everyday, I try not to wash my locks after every gym sesh. Instead, I’ll grab some dry shampoo and spray it into the roots to absorb all the sweat and grossness in there. This new dry shampoo has the same natural ingredients that help revive dull, lifeless hair, and best of all, it’s made with natural tapioca to absorb extra oil.  My absolute favourite part is the scent though, I totally prefer this one over the original because it’s white grapefruit and mosa mint.

From your head hair to your leg hair, an item in probably anyone’s shower is a good razor. I’ve always been a fan of Gillette Venus since it came out, so I was excited to try out the Gillette Venus ComfortGlide razor, which contain moisture bars that are designed to flex around every contour of the body. It also releases skin-conditioning body butter, so you can skip the moisturizer once you step out of the shower.

Lastly, and the item I was most excited to try, is the Crest 3D White Whitestrips with Light. I first saw these earlier this year when Desi Perkins mentioned it on her Instagram and have been waiting for it to hit Canadian shelves ever since. This is the first at-home whitening light technology from Crest and is proven to deliver a dramatically whiter smile compared to just strips alone. First you put the strips on your top and bottom teeth as you normally would for an hour. After that, grab the light, which features the best and fastest blue-light teeth whitening technology available over the counter, put it up against your top row of teeth and hold it there until the light turns off (about five minutes), then do your bottom row.  I will note that this does take up a lot of time, so I would recommend using it for special occasions. In totally it’s probably like an hour and 15 minute treatment. I initially put the whitestrips on and then took a nap until my phone alarm work me up, then I sat there with the device in my mouth.  Did my teeth look white after one application? No. But then again, this isn’t a one-time thing. I would recommend popping those strips in your mouth while you’re doing something else and then watch some YouTube vids or something while you’re using the light. Do it everyday to see results, and if you don’t see results, Crest has an awesome money-back guarantee.

I have to say that I really do love everything that I tried out.  It’s kinda weird to blog about deodorant or razors, but these are items that we use everyday and will continue to use everyday.  And trust me, not all brands and formulas work the same (vegan deodorant, anyone?). Let me know your favourite staple skincare, body care, and haircare products for fall.
