Your best skin yet: The skincare products you need to try this month

Skincare, the one beauty category that everyone should have in their arsenal.

There are so many skincare products and items out there that it can definitely be tough to narrow down what’s best for you and your skin.  Dry, oil, normal, combination, acne… and there’s the actual products themselves… makeup removers, cleansers, toners, serums, eye creams, moisturizers, sprays… the list goes on and on.

If you are looking into refreshing or revamping your skincare routine but don’t know where to start then I have some recommendations on what to check out this month. Keep reading for my picks for October.

Avon Anti-Pollution skincare products

Avon Anti-Pollution skincare line

Environmental damage does a lot to our skin. I’ve written before about skincare items that help with daily aggressors and pollution, but Avon just came out with a line that is both affordable and comes in a range of products to help combat wrinkles, sagging skin, dullness, clogged pores, etc. that comes with exposure to air pollution.

The Avon Anti-Pollution collection is comprised of a serum, a charcoal clay mask, and charcoal clay masks that will make your skin four-times more resistant to pollution.

The Avon Anew Neutralize Anti-Pollution Serum (on sale for C$29.99, regular C$44) is a serum that can be used morning and night to help protect and repair your skin. Its formula is powered by botanical extracts and includes an invisible shield to help block pollutants and free radicals that cause signs of premature aging and moisture loss.

Apply the serum after the Anew Neutralize Anti-Pollution Charcoal Mask Stick (on sale for C$15.99, regular C$28), which is a a clay mask that you just glide on the face.  This stick contains a combination of charcoal and kaolin clay to help absorb toxins, oils, and impurities. Leave it on for 20 minutes or so and then rinse off for fresh, clean skin.

Finally, for a weekly treat, use the Anew Neutralize Anti-Pollution Charcoal Pore Strips (on sale for C$7.99, regular C$15), which include six individually packaged pore strips that are formulated with charcoal, known to draw out dirt that is deep in your pores.  Put a strip on your nose and then gently wet it to adhere to your skin. Leave it on for 15 minutes or so and then peel off to reveal cleaned pores.

I think this collection is fabulous, especially since I spend a lot of time in NYC. Even though Winnipeg is a much smaller city, pollution can be found anywhere and these items help your skin be four-times more resistant to dirt, dust, smoke, and smog.

Biotherm Life Plankton eye cream

Biotherm Life Plankton Eye

When it comes to which items to buy for your skincare routine, make sure you don’t forget about the eye area.

When I first started getting Botox I started with my crow’s feet since they had started forming minor lines when I smiled. I have seen people around the same age as me or even younger who have really intense crow’s feet and although I have some minor ones, I chock it up to having used eye creams over the last few years which has probably diminished the appearance of them.

New this year is Biotherm’s Life Plankton Eye cream (C$54), which is supposed to make your eye area appear younger. It targets the eye contour to get rid of any puffiness, bags, and dark circles.  Infused with their highest concentration of Life Plankton, this eye cream will prevent premature eye aging by sustaining skin regenerating capacities and fighting those dreaded crow’s feet and wrinkles.

A little goes a long way with this since the texture is light. The creamy gel formula envelopes the eye area to create a second-skin natural barrier to protect it from aging.  At the same time, it will hydrate and nourish the eye area.

Rodan and Fields Recharge set Rodan + Fields RECHARGE regimen

If you are like me and freshly out of your 20s, but don’t have a good skincare routine yet, first off, get on it, and secondly, maybe looking into Rodan + Fields’ newest line, RECHARGE.

This collection of products (which actually comes in a handy set for C$156) is designed to fight skin issues that typically pop up in our 20s.  This can include dullness and dryness. Included in this set is the RECHARGE 3-in-1 Super Cleanser, RECHARGE Ultra Boost Moisturizing Treatment, and the RECHARGE Protect + Blur Broad Spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen.

Use all three products together to reveal younger-looking glowing skin, as well as added protection against everyday aggressors like UVA/UVB rays, blue light, lack of sleep, and more.  The brand has come out with a prelaunch set which includes these products, along with headband and stickers too.

R+F used Multi-Med Therapy in designing and coming up with this collection, which is the right ingredients in the right formulations applied in the right order. RECHARGE features the brand’s Electri5 Complex which is a unique blend of their RFA+ antioxidant technology together with electrolytes, peptides, probiotics, and superfruits. Their RFA+ technology balances skin’s equilibrium and boosts skin’s energy to defend against visible signs of stress.

This set is designed to be used together, so I recommend picking up the whole collection if this would be something that would be suitable for your skin.

Volition Beauty Screen Time mist and Reversa Retinol serum

Volition Beauty Screen Time Hydra Mist

Volition Beauty’s newest product is probably my favourite skincare product this season.

The clean beauty brand is known for coming up with innovative products and their Screen Time Hydra Mist (C$38) is no different. I’ve talked about the effects of blue light before and how my blue light glasses have completely transformed my life as I sit in front of a computer all day (and when I’m not in front of that computer, I’m looking at my phone). The light emitted from these devices, known as blue light, is often said to cause eye strain and photo aging (although I don’t believe this has actually been proven).

Since Volition Beauty is a crowd-sourced beauty brand, in that anyone can submit an idea to them and if it’s feasible and innovative they will then let people vote on the ideas online, this new product comes from Instagram mega-influencer Tezza.

Screen Time is a hydrating mist that contains 12 oils and extracts to help protect skin from photo-aging while also leaving you with a soft, dewy finish. The brand says it’s ideal for normal and dry skin tones and will also help combat dryness, fine lines, wrinkles, and redness. Just shake it up, spray it on, and go about your day knowing that your face will be safe from those harmful gadgets we use all day, everyday.

Standouts in the formula include marigold extract, which minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles; Indian ginseng, which promotes a healthy-looking glow; and Vitamin B5, which hydrates and softens the appearance of redness.

I’ve been using this spray pretty much everyday since I got it and have been using it as a makeup setting spray. It’s tough to say if it’s actually working since I would think it would be a longevity kind of product, but I love the idea that it’s giving me protection. I have seen first-hand how my blue light glasses have affected my brain health (I have not gotten a migraine since I’ve made the switch), so I love knowing that this stuff is protecting my face while I’m in front of a screen.

Reversa Retint[A]list cream

I’ve did a whole post on retinol and why you should be incorporating it into your routine, but if you are still on the hunt for the retinol cream of your dreams, then take a look at what Reversa has released recently.

Brand new to the Canadian skincare line is Retin[A]list (C$60), a cream that is formulated with powerful anti-aging ingredients, as well as protecting and soothing molecules that help to reduce the appearance of dark spots, wrinkles, sagging skin, and loss of elasticity and firmness.

This 100 per cent vegan formula contains retinol, fragmented hyaluronic acid, Tasmanian berry extract (known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties), and (6)-paradol, which is a multipurpose super antioxidant that protects the skin from damage caused by chemical products, pollution, and UV rays.

Apply this serum every evening for long-lasting hydration, a reduction in the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, dark spots, and blemishes caused by acne. It also helps with restoring skin’s radiance and protects against environmental stressors and pollution.

There are so many awesome new skincare items available this season that if you are looking for some new stuff to try, definitely keep these in mind.  With the holidays coming up, that’s always a great time to invest in whole collections since lots of brands typically come out with special-edition sets.  Since we are already full-fledged into fall and my skin at least has been quite dry, I’ll definitely be using these items to keep it in tip-top shape.

Have you tried any notable skincare items lately?
