Factory Girl: Edie Sedgwick Makeup Look

Four more days until Halloween!  Halloween is my favourite holiday because not only do I love all things horror and candy but you get to dress up as someone else!  And I mean who doesn’t want to be someone else for a day?

I was requested to recreate Andy Warhol muse, Edie Sedgwick, the original factory girl. She was also an “it girl” and heiress.  Her signature look is very ’60s – the eyeliner in the crease, nude lips, big lashes.

This is an easy costume to recreate, all you need is a black or striped shirt, dark denim, and pull your hair back.  If you want to really channel Edie, grab a cigarette or fake one (I’m not supporting smoking here but a lot of her photos show her with a cigarette).  The real magic of her look of course is her makeup.  You can also use this eye makeup with voluminous Brigitte Bardot hair for a sex-kitten look.

So let’s get started! Start with a clean canvas.  The products I used were Hard Candy Sheer Envy primer then YSL Touche Eclat, MAC Pro Longwear foundation in NC15, and It Cosmetics Bye Bye Undereye concealer.  I chose a pale foundation because Edie was quite pale, plus this foundation contains an SPF so therefore in photos I will look whiter than I actually am. Grab your bronzer and do some slight contouring of the cheekbones and your forehead. Be very light here, you don’t want to go overboard.

Using a light pink blush lightly apply some colour to your cheeks. I used MAC’s Coygirl. Make sure to fill in your eyebrows because she had some thicker ones.  Don’t go overboard with the thickness but just enough to make them more pronounced. Remember, it’s all about the eyes for this look.

Using a white or silver eyeshadow, lightly pat the colour on your eyelids.  I used Lancome Color Design Style Section Metallic. Grab your favourite black liquid liner and line your upper lash line winging it out.  I used my handy tried and tested MAC Liquid Eye Liner. Now for the fun part.  Grab a black eyeshadow (I used MAC Carbon) and lightly line where your crease is all the way from your tear duct to the outer edge then connect it to the winged part you created on your upper lash line.  I had to draw it on a few times until the colour got dark enough.  When I got it down pat I actually grabbed a brush and smudged it a bit then took my liquid eyeliner and went over it for a more defined look. Next grab your white eyeliner and line your waterline.  I used a NYX eyeliner in white ($3.99 at Zellers). Now grab your black eyeliner and line your lowerlash with it.

After that I actually grabbed a white eyeshadow and went over the white on my lower lash line to really make that white pop.   Grab your liquid eye liner once again and go over the black on your lower lash to define the look.

Grab a highlighter and highlight under your brows.  I used It Cosmetics Brow Power Lift.

Now the final steps are to curl your lashes and apply mascara.  I actually used a primer before my mascara to get maximum volume but it’s not necessary.  I didn’t use fake lashes for my eyes but I would definitely recommend them (I didn’t have my glue handy).  Luckily with my YSL Faux Cils mascara my lashes looked fake enough, but for extra effect I would for sure add wispy lashes to the outer corners to make the eyes pop even more.  Heck, I would even add some falsies to the bottom lashes as well.

Lastly, apply a nude coloured lipstick, or if you don’t have one use concealer to blank out your lips.  MAC’s Myth would be perfect for this look, I used my It Cosmetics concealer to wipe out my lips because I lent that lipstick to a friend.  Either one works.

And voila!  We are done!

Hope you enjoyed the look!  Don’t forget to subscribe :).

Lift Without the Botox: It Cosmetics Brow Power Lift

So you guys know how much I love It Cosmetics Bye Bye Undereyes Concealer, I’m seriously obsessed with it. Other than that one product, that was the only thing that I have ever tried from It Cosmetics which is a makeup line created by Jamie Kern, a former TV news anchor, Miss Washington USA, and a contestant on the reality show Big Brother. She launched the line in 2008 and it is available through QVCBeauty.comBeauty 360itcosmetics.com and The Shopping Channel in Canada.  A couple of weeks ago the company sent me one of their new products, the Brow Power Lift double ended pencil. Now I love me a good highlighter, I use it underneath my eyebrows, on the inside corner of my eyes, anywhere really that needs some brightening up. This product is a highlighter but contains hydrolyzed collagen and Vitamins A, C & E.  Because of these power ingredients, the product lifts the look of brows, opens up and brightens eyes, plus lifts and illuminates features instantly.

The pencil, according to the supplied press release, doesn’t just lift your look instantly, it also is a “wrinkle-fighting secret weapon”:

Whenever you have stubborn wrinkles, such as 11 lines or marionette lines, just line the deepest inset of the wrinkle and it instantly looks pulled out, as if you just got a cosmetic filler injection!  The high performance illuminating pigments last all day, plus the anti-aging benefits work simultaneously for younger looking, lifted features!

The product is also talc-free and infused with ultra-hydrating age reverse and prevent technology.  Plus it is paraben-free, fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, and hypo-allernegic.

I myself don’t have wrinkles yet so I can’t tell you if the product actually does what it claims in terms of making wrinkles disappear, but I can tell you if it is a good highlighter/illuminator.

The pencil (which comes with a handy sharpener) is dual ended, with one end being a pearl highlighter and the other end being matte. Up until this blog post I only really ever used the pearl side and I have to say I love it, it does a great job on highlighting your brows and the handy pencil makes the application flawless.

For the sake of this blog post I tried out both sides and followed the instructions on how to use it.  According to the press release, for a more lifted brow use either the matte or pearl side and trace along the entire length of your brow, both above and below the brow hair from the start of your brow to the end or tail.  Once applied, lightly blend and pat in the illuminator with your fingers along the entire area 1/4 inch above and below your eyebrows.  The illuminator is natural looking, soft, and invisible to the eye, but attracts light to the area both above and below your eyebrows, creating a more lifted, youthful look.

Before

This picture is before I applied the product.  For the sake of this post I used the pearl side on one brow and the matte side on the other.

Pearl side applied to my left brow

Matte end applied to my entire right brow

After I blended both of them in

As you can see in my “after” shot, my eyebrows do look more noticeable, I don’t know if they are necessarily “lifted” but they are definitely highlighted.  As I said before I couldn’t really tell you if it diminishes the appearance of wrinkles because I don’t have any yet.

So would I recommend this product?  Yes, but I don’t think it’s necessary.  I really love the pearl side as a highlighter and the matte side can double as an under-brow concealer.  If you are looking for a great highlighter or if you have wrinkles, I would recommend trying it. The product also feels like butter on your skin and you don’t have to press hard for the product to apply.

It Cosmetics Brow Power Lift retails for $24 CDN on The Shopping Channel.

Have you tried It Cosmetics Brow Power Lift?  What were your thoughts?

Please note: I did receive this product for review, however, it did not affect my opinions on it.  All opinions are my honest own :).

A Pop of Shine

So one of my favourite things about fall is busting out my Ugg boats.  Love em’ or hate em’ they are warm and comfortable, especially after wearing heels all day at work.  I got the black sequined Ugg boots last February in Las Vegas and I have noticed that they are starting to pop up in stores here in Canada.

I have been a huge fan of Ugg Australia for about seven years now and have owned at least five pairs of these boots in all different colours and styles.  Even though they are not the best made boots anymore (they make them in China, not Australia – hey, supply and demand right?) and there is the fact that they are extremely overpriced, but for some reason I keep coming back to them.  So when I saw these sequined boots in the Ugg Australia store at the Forum Shops I knew I had to have them.

I love sparkly things, like seriously, the more glitter, the better.  These boots come in a variety of different colours – black, gold, silver, purple, and red.  When I bought mine they only had black because they were a hot commodity, riding off the coattails of being on Oprah’s Favourite Things.  I like the black the best because they are understated compared to the other colours.  Although I tend to be quite flashy, for these boots I would have picked black even if there were more colours to choose from because 1) black goes with everything and b) they aren’t as in-your-face as the other colours are (not to knock the other colours, I just prefer the black ones the best). I usually wear these with liquid leggings or black denim, when I tried them on in the store with blue jeans I thought they looked like sewage boots, as weird as that sounds. I definitely do not think they go with everything but you can for sure dress them up and down, and besides, with the holidays coming up they are a perfect fit.  Festive and warm.

The boots are covered in sequins and have satin details.  Inside they have the standard sheepskin lining for maximum comfort. So would I recommend them?  I myself love them and they are a fun way to add some flavour and shine to an outfit. In the United States they retail for $170 and in Canada for $255.  If you are Canadian like me, I would either order them online from an American retailer like Victoria’s Secret or take a trip down to the U.S. to get them.  I hate how Ugg Australia is marked up here in Canada by so much.  So with that being said, they are a lot for really a frivolous purchase (when I travel I usually buy one expensive item, this was it), I do not really wear these in the winter time because we get a lot of snow here and iconically I find that snow and slush tend to ruin my Ugg boats.  So far I have only worn these in the fall and spring and a little in the winter if the snow is hard. For so much money I would hate to ruin them because of a little snow and slush.

I also noticed online that there are a pair of over-the-knee sequin Uggs which are just so fabulous but unnecessary for $350 USD.

As a side note, shoes.com is offering 20 per cent off site-wide and free shipping.  If you were looking into purchasing these Uggs or any other Uggs I would check this sale out, it’s on until October 29, 2011.  Sorry for my Canadian friends, they do not ship Ugg Australia internationally but they sell a ton of other fab brands if you guys are interested.

What do you think of sequin Uggs?  Fun or tacky?  Overpriced or not worth it?  Leave me a comment below :).
