Spring product love: Kiehl’s Super Fluid SPF 50

So you know how they always say to wear sunscreen every day to protect your skin from skin cancer and premature aging/sunspots?  Yeah, well I don’t do that.  In fact, I don’t really know anyone who actually does.

It’s a good idea in theory but really, who wants to slap on sunscreen everyday, wait for it to dry, and then walk around with that gross smell all day?  Now don’t get me wrong here, I believe in taking good care of your skin and body as much as anyone else but the hassle of applying sunscreen every day is a pain.  Luckily, I found my solution.

I got to try the Kiehl’s Super Fluid UV Defense SPF 50 lotion when I got a whole whack of Kiehl’s products a few weeks ago.  Now, I can’t vouch for the rest of the body, but I apply this on my face after my moisturizer in the morning and it acts as a foundation primer, while at the same time protecting my skin from the sun.  When the sales lady told me I could use it as a primer I pretty much fell in love.  I mean, if I’m going to use a primer anyways, it may as well be something that has a high SPF right?

From Kiehl’s:

Shake-shake away 90% of skin aging with this oil-free, lightweight facial sunscreen.  Provides long lasting protection against damaging UVA and UVB rays, which can cause again, dark spots, freckles and skin darkening.  Water-resistant and recommended for daily use after your moisturizer or under make-up application.

I got the 50 ml bottle of this (also comes in a 125 ml size) and it retails for C$36, which sounds like a lot of money, but when you think about how pricey some foundation primers are out there (Laura Mercier’s foundation primer is C$40 and Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer with SPF 15 is C$50) it’s really not that bad.  And you are getting something with a high SPF factor in it.

The product is quite runny when you squeeze it out of the bottle so I find that I have to work fast with it otherwise it will get all over my hands. I usually squirt a dime-sized amount on my fingers to cover my entire face.  Also, considering that it is a sunscreen, it goes on sheer, not white, unlike other sunscreens out there.

So would I recommend this product?  Yes, absolutely!  I think I have finally found my holy grail primer.  Not only it is great for a base but you can use it as a sunscreen for the beach, pool, etc.  This is definitely one of those products that have a variety of different uses, and although it’s a little pricey at first, I think that its well worth the money and I will be purchasing this again when it runs out.  It’s also unisex; not just for women, so really anyone can use it.

I'm wearing Bare Minerals Mineral Foundation over top of the Kiehl's Super Fluid. It provides a perfect foundation base. ** Please excuse my gross hair, I had a bad dye job recently and I'm currently growing it out. I swear it doesn't look this bad in real life.

Have you tried Kiehl’s Super Fluid?  If so, what were your thought?  Also, what is your favourite foundation primer?

NOTD: Urban Outfitters Hot Tub

Spring has basically sprung and I couldn’t think of a better hue than Urban Outfitters’ Hot Tub nail polish.

I picked up this gorgeous hot pink fuchsia colour in Montreal at the Urban Outfitters store on St. Catherines and it was love at first sight.  For only $6, I knew I couldn’t leave the store without it (they actually had a promo on, two for $8 so I picked up Crowded as well).

Pictures do not do this colour justice.

The polish glides on your nails and is perfectly opaque after just coats.  The colour didn’t last as long as Crowded but I still got at least three days of wear before it started to chip badly.

Unfortunately, the photos didn’t really catch the right shade, it looks a bit more coral in the pics. However, if you have an Urban Outfitters near you check to see if they still have this colour, it’s a must have!

Also, on a completely unrelated topic, I found an awesome deal for all you nail polish lovers out there.  Monthly nail polish subscription service Julep is offering a first box for only a penny for new customers (and free shipping to Canada)!  I signed up yesterday and chose to get the Bombshell box.  I have heard a few things about Julep and I’m excited to try out the polishes.  The boxes run around $19.99 a month, which is quite pricey, so I’ll probably just cancel after my first box, but hey, a penny for two polishes that would cost me $19.99 otherwise, you can’t go wrong!

To sign up for your box visit Julep and enter code PENNY at check out.

March 2012 Topbox

If you read my posts about the December and January Loose Button Luxeboxes you’ll know all about the different kinds of beauty subscription services that are all the rage here in North America.  Basically, you pay a certain amount of money a month (usually it’s a small amount like $10 or so) and every month you get a box of deluxe and full-size beauty samples.  It’s a total surprise until you open the box, so you won’t know what you are getting.

Way back in November I came across Topbox, which is a Canadian beauty subscription service that provides only the top brands.  I was blown away by the inaugural November box that I signed up right away.  The boxes were actually sold out at the time until March so I had a few months before I got a box of my own.

I got my first Topbox on Monday and already actually knew what I was getting (I came across an open bomarkx video on YouTube – I couldn’t resist a peek!).

The box is actually a tube canister that you open at the top.  I think I actually prefer a box over the tube as I’m not quite sure what I will do with these from now on.

Here’s what I got:

  • Cargo eyeshadow in Cannes (3.5 ml) Full size (7g) retails for $18.50 ** I believe this is a full size product
  • mark. Nailed It Trend Mini Nail Lacquers in Violet Femme shades.  Retails for $7
  • Redken Color Extend Shampoo and Conditioner samples (set of two).
  • Simple Facial Wipes. Full size for 25 wipes $10.99.  Sample included seven wipes.

I had read reviews online and other people got either a sample of the Make Up For Ever mascara or makeup remover instead of the Cargo eyeshadow.  I don’t really need any more mascara samples or makeup removers (plus the box already came with makeup removing wipes) so I’m glad I got the eyeshadow.

I really liked the March 2012 Topbox and although the products I got I wouldn’t necessarily buy in stores I’m glad I got to try them out.  I really like the pale lavender pink Cargo eyeshadow (applies really nice) and the nail polishes.  The lip stain was okay, it’s not really a colour I would have picked out for myself, but with that being said, I don’t really have a colour like that in my collection.  The shampoo and conditioner samples were mediocre, I have so many of those at home already that it’s not really a memorable product or anything.  I did, however, really enjoy the makeup wipes as those are always needed.

So would I recommend Topbox?  Based on my first box, yes!  For only C$10 a month (I believe it’s like $11.60 or so with taxes) you definitely get your money’s worth, plus you pay on a month-to-month basis so you can cancel at any time. In this box alone I got my money back and then some (the approx. retail price of my box was around $42).  If you are interested in signing up, make sure you get on their wait list as they are currently all sold out at the moment, however, they will probably be letting people sign up again soon.

So how would I compare this box to the Loose Button one?  I actually really loved all the products I got in both my December and January Luxeboxes, however, I find that with the Loose Button one every box seems to be different, whereas Topbox seems to be more consistent in what people get in their boxes, as in the products all seem to be the same.  I got really great brands in both my Luxeboxs, but I know that based on other people’s reviews, some boxes contained drug store products, which is still nice, but maybe not worth the $12 you pay for it a month.  With Luxebox, I find that it’s more of the luck of the draw.  They still offer a good box though, don’t get me wrong.

Did you receive the March 2012 Topbox?  If so, what were your thoughts?
