NOTD: China Glaze Aquadelic

So if you read my NOTD post from last week featuring China Glaze’s Electric Beat polish, I mentioned that I absolutely had to find Aquadelic, also from their early 2012 Electro Pop collection.  Well, three stores later I finally found a bottle, literally the last one.

When I saw this colour online I was blown away, it’s like the perfect mix of turquoise meets bright meets mint.  It was too pretty to pass up.  Well I thought that way until I found the last bottle of it at a Chatter’s location.  I took a look at it and I was hesitant.  The colour wasn’t as pretty based on the shade in the bottle.  I was floundering; should I get it?  Do I need it? What if I don’t like it?  Well, I chose to bite the bullet and buy it, mainly because I was hunting so long and hard for it, plus it was the last one, so I felt like it was meant to be somehow.  When push comes to shove, I’m so glad I bought it.

I think I may have found my new favourite colour. I haven’t been this excited about a nail polish ever since I painted OPI’s Fly on my nails.  With only one coat painted on my thumb I knew I made the right choice in buying it.  This colour is like pretty much the same colour as Tiffany blue (although not exactly the same, Tiffany and Co. holds the trademark for the iconic shade).  China Glaze already has a colour based off Tiffany’s (appropriately titled For Audrey) but I find this one is more bright and fun.

As for application, two coats of this holy grail polish left me with a beautiful opaque finish.  I polished up the manicure with OPI’s Top Coat.

If you are on the fence about buying this shade, don’t be; just like how a Tiffany’s box can make your heart flutter every time you see one, this polish does the same for me.  There’s something up with China Glaze’s Electro Pop collection, because I didn’t love Electric Beat at first either.  Don’t trust the colours in the bottle, they go on so much nicer.

In my opinion, this shade is a must have.  If you can still find it, pick it up.  You won’t regret it.  Plus China Glaze is pretty affordable, they retails for $6.99 at Chatter’s in Canada, and even less at Sally’s (plus Sally’s always has promos going on).

Julep Maven March 2012 Bombshell Box

So if you are a nail polish fanatic like me (I counted two days ago, I have over 60 polishes, eek!), you would know about the Julep Maven program.  Yes, my friends, another beauty subscription service, however, this time it’s nail polish and hand-related products and you get to pick the polishes you want.  I mentioned in a few blog posts back that Julep was having a promotion for new members where you could get your first box for only a penny.  That’s right, a penny… with free shipping to Canada.  So naturally, being the beauty buff that I am, I signed up.

Like every other subscription service, you do a quiz so they know what kind of style you are.  I didn’t like the polishes that Julep thought would suit me so I chose the Bombshell box instead.

In my Bombshell box I got a Julep-branded nail file, a glycolic hand scrub, and two polishes, Natasha (a coral-red colour) and Sofia (a sheer green polish with micro glitter).

Sofia

Alright, so my opinions on my Julep Maven March 2012 box — I liked it but I wish I would have chosen different polishes.  I absolutely loved the green colour online, and although it’s nice in the bottle, this goes on super sheer.  It’s a nice layering colour, but I wish it applied like how it looks in the bottle.  As for Natasha, it’s pretty,  but I have a lot of similar colours already.  I haven’t actually tried the colours yet, so maybe they will blow my mind when I have them on my nails (like China Glaze’s Electric Beat).  I also wanted to note that Julep nail polishes retail for $14 on the Julep site, so they are pretty pricey compared to other ones other there (OPI, China Glaze, Essie, etc.).  They are also .27 fl.oz., whereas by comparison, a China Glaze polish is .5 fl.oz., so you are getting less polish than other popular brands.

As for the other two products, a nail file is a nail file and those are always needed so I was glad to get that, and the scrub it amazing.  I was a bit hesitant at first because I have so many scrubs already, by oh my gosh, I’m obsessed with this stuff.  First of all, it smells great and the tiny beads feel so good when you massage them on your hands.  Wash it all off and you are left with baby-smooth hands.  The scrub alone retails for $32 on the Julep site, so if you got it in your box, you got a great deal. I will be using this every time I paint my nails from now on, I’m obsessed.

So would I recommend the Julep Maven program?  If you have $19.99 to spend every month on nail polishes, then sure!  I actually cancelled my membership after I got my box because I would rather spend that $20 a month on polishes that I can see in person (not that I spend $20 a month on nail polish anyways).  The program is pretty pricey compared to others out there; however, you do get a few perks.  You get to see what you are getting beforehand so it’s not a surprise (which could be a pro or con if you like surprises), and you don’t like your box you can choose another or skip the month entirely.

In case you are interested in the program, here are some other perks with becoming a member:

  • Being a Maven, gives you exclusive access to COLOR!  You get it first, and YOU decide how often you want to receive your beauty editor Sneak Peek Box
  • For just $19.99 a month, you’ll receive over $40 worth of trendsetting polish colors and cutting-edge treatment products each month customized in a gift-able Sneak Peek Box
  • Each Sneak Peek Box features new, never before released colors and treatments FIRST to you, before anyone else
  • Your box also includes hits and cult favorites – the products we like to keep on the top of editors’ minds
  • 20% off all julep.com purchases
  • FREE shipping on ALL your purchases
  • Each box also comes with a surprise and delight element- something to look forward to!
  • Receive additional membership perks throughout the year

I’m glad I got to try the Julep Maven program (for the low, low cost of a penny), but I think I’ll take my money elsewhere.

Keep a lookout for nail of the day posts featuring the polishes.  You never know, maybe I’ll change my mind based on the results!

Oh, and before I forget, Sephora has their Chic Week going on until April 6, 2012.  You can get 15 per cent off in stores or online (not for Canadians though, boo!).  I picked up a back up of Laura Mercier’s Silk Creme foundation in Bamboo Beige (I’m almost out of the one I have) and Make Up For Ever’s Aqua Eyes eyeliner in black.  I went during the VIB event on March 29, but unfortunately they ran out of umbrellas by the time I got to the store :(.  What did you pick up?

Inglot Cosmetics: The Freedom System

Like MAC but find the prices to be steep?  If you have an Inglot store near you, check it out!

Inglot Cosmetics is a Polish-based company similar to MAC but not as pricey.  I’ve known about Inglot for a while now but it seems like it has gotten quite a following recently by beauty bloggers and Youtubers alike.  Unfortunately for us Canadians, all the Inglot stores are in Quebec, but when I was in Montreal a month ago Inglot was on my list of shops to hit up.

Like MAC, you can get a completely customizable palette to your specifications, however, at Inglot there are more size options. Appropriately titled, in the Freedom System you can get either round or square options in a two, three, four, five, 10, or 40 size palette (there may be more sizes, check online for details). I looked online and it seems like with the square palettes you get more product, but they seemed to be the same price as the round ones so I’m not sure why anyone would want to choose the circle ones.  When I was there all the palettes were on sale as well (huge perk, since MAC never goes on sale).

After you pick out which palette you want, you grab a magnetic clipboard and choose the colours you want and stick them on the board.  This process literally took me like half an hour; Inglot has basically every colour under the rainbow and then some.  I had the hardest time choosing which shade of taupe I wanted.  I ended up with a dark grey shimmer colour, a shimmery purple taupe, and a bright yellow (the eyeshadows don’t have names, just numbers which I can’t remember).

The case the product comes in is super chic; it has a black base with a frosted magnetic top with “Inglot” printed across it numerous times.  The magnets are quite strong, so I often find myself just sliding one side off to use the colour I want.

The eye shadows themselves are incredibly creamy and soft and apply beautifully. In terms of texture, I would say they are comparable; MAC has different formulations of eye shadows and I’m sure Inglot does too, but the three I chose seemed to feel the same.

In terms of price, Inglot is definitely less money than MAC.  A full size pro palette (15 colour) can retail for around $227 USD, my three square Inglot palette cost me C$29, which was the sale price, I think it retails for $35 to $39, I can’t remember.  Regardless, that’s C$9.67 an eyeshadow.  By comparison, one pan eyeshadow from MAC is C$14.50.  You also get more eyeshadow with the Inglot product (2.7 grams per pan versus 1.5 grams for a MAC pan eyeshadow).  Plus, you aren’t paying for the palette, the C$29 included the three colours and the case to hold them.  A MAC Pro Palette alone costs C$17.50 I believe.

I believe Inglot does ship to the United States via their online store.  If you love MAC but don’t want to pay a lot for an eyeshadow, I would definitely check out Inglot, they offer basically all the same products as MAC but at more affordable prices.  I also picked up a brush from Inglot, but I’ll save that for a separate post.

Have you tried eyeshadows from Inglot Cosmetics?  What are your thoughts?
