Fast and dry: Poshe top coat

I’m really picky when it comes to top coat.  My collection of nail polish spans close to 90 shades so naturally I need a really great top coat to make the colours shine and look complete.  For a while now my favourite has been Seche Vite’s, but then I heard that it’s not 3-free and contains a chemical that can cause birth defects in California (I’m in Canada, but still), so I thought it should probably look for something else.

For a while now I have been using the OPI Top Coat, which to be honest, is not my favourite.  It’s not fast drying and it doesn’t leave my polish looking super shiny.  I had a gift certificate for Sally’s Beauty Supply so I thought I would pick up the Poshe Super Fast-Drying Top Coat.

If you are looking for a good dupe for Seche Vite, this is it.  This top coat leaves your polish dry in a minute and super shiny.  Plus, it’s 3-free (no Formaldehyde, Toluene or Nitrocellulose).  When I was using OPI’s top coat I felt like painting my nails became a bit of a chore because it took so long to dry; with this product, the whole process takes five minutes and then I’m out the door without worrying about my polish chipping.

Speaking of chipping, I do find that this protects my manicure from major chippage (is that even a word?), but there is still some minimal tip wear.  I don’t mind that though because I like to switch up my polish every few days, so if my manicure is looking less than perfect after a day or so I don’t feel so bad about taking it off.

Nail polish - SpaRitual Knowledge is Power

Overall, if you are looking for a great top coat, this is it.  I still have a special place in my heart for Seche Vite (I still use their base coat, I’m in the process of finishing it up), but if you are worried about crazy birth defects (I’m not, but I still like to be safe just in case), then I would pick this one up. They are quite identical, although Seche Vite may leave your nails looking a tad shinier, but honestly, I would rather have a top coat be safe for my health than use one that could potentially harm it.

Have you tried Poshe top coat?  What were your thoughts?

Summer locks: my picks for summer hair products

So between chlorine, the sun, heat (temperature and hot tools), and sweat, summertime can be quite harsh on your hair. I have a lot of hair products but there are a few that I regularly use on a daily basis whenever I do anything to my hair.

Dove Style + Care Amplified Mousse

If I want an extra bit of volume, I will apply this mousse to the roots of my hair fresh out of the shower.  I have a few mousses but honestly I prefer this one the most as you don’t need a lot of it and it really does do it’s job.  For the most part in the summertime I will usually just air dry my hair but if I want some major volume I will apply this prior to an at-home blowout.

Kiehl’s Heat-Protective Silk Strengthening Cream

If I am going to blow dry my hair I will often apply this product closer to the ends.  I know that Kiehl’s is mostly known fro their skin care, but honestly every hair product I have tried from them has been great.  This stuff also leaves your hair nice and shiny, not to mention soft.

Redken Nature’s Rescue Radiant Sea Spray

This is a product that I usually only ever use in summertime as it is a hair fragrance that leaves your locks smelling like the ocean. I mean it’s not the same scent to a T but it leaves your tresses scented like beach.  The best part?  Whenever you toss your hair around it sends off a scent burst.

Schwarzkopf Essensity Natural Shine Serum

If I choose to straighten my hair I will often apply a shine serum to finish off the look.  I have really been loving this one from Essensity as it looks like a cream once out of the pump but leaves your locks smooth and shiny.

Dove Anti-Frizz Serum

I am seriously obsessed with this stuff.  I don’t really have frizzy hair to begin with, but I will apply this to damp hair and it just leaves my hair looking nice, soft, and manageable.  Typically I use two pumps of the product and then apply it closer to my ends.  I cannot recommend this enough.

Kiehl’s Olive Fruit Oil Deeply Repairative Hair Pak

I have tried a few hair masks but honestly, nothing compares to this one.  Apply this to damp hair after you shampoo, leave it in for five minutes, and your hair is so smooth.  I don’t use this everyday, but if I feel like my hair is feeling a little coarse I will apply this stuff and my hair will be back to looking smooth and healthy-looking in no time.  I did use this right after I highlighted my hair blonde (I basically went from black to blonde highlights which is very damaging) and after a few uses my hair went from dry and brittle to soft and manageable.

Topbox July 2012

A new month, a new Topbox.

Unlike the past few months Canada Post decided to be nice this time around and deliver my box in a timely manner.  Obviously as soon as I got home I teared the package open to see what goodies this month’s “box” included (it comes in a tube).

  • China Glaze nail polish in Purple Panic (neon) (full size)
  • NuMe Hydro Punch Hydrating Shampoo (20 ml – full size 250 ml/$24.99)
  • $100 voucher to use at numeproducts.com
  • Pure + Simple Calming Cucumber Mask (20 ml – full size 50 ml/$25.25)
  • Sampar Essentials Ultra Hydrating Fluid (two samples – full size 50 ml/$80)

Overall I found this month’s selection of products to be satisfactory.  I knew ahead of time that I would be receiving a nail polish (they send out a questionnaire which asks what you thought of the previous month’s products and preferences on upcoming samples).  Luckily I don’t already own that particular China Glaze shade.  I put the colour on right away and actually really like it, it’s more of a magenta then purple, but it’s very eye-catching (nails of the day post coming soon!).

As for the other samples, I did receive a shampoo sample in last month’s box so I wasn’t too keen on that.  I did try it out and it did smell nice, however, I’m not too sure how moisturizing it was on my hair.  If I want something that will leave my hair super soft I will usually reach for either Pureology or Dove.  Shampoo samples are nice to receive though if you are travelling somewhere and need something small.  I also take them to the gym.

I really enjoyed the face mask as I don’t have any masks currently.  With calming cucumber in it, this stuff will be perfect for sun-exposed skin.  Plus I totally plan to bring this on my upcoming Vegas trip in August (hello, +40 C weather and sun!).

I was pretty indifferent about the serums as I already use Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Serum, as well as my holy grail face items so I know ahead of time, even before trying it out, I won’t be purchasing that product.

Finally, it was a nice touch to include a $100 gift certificate for NuMe, however, all the products on the site are over $100 anyways (it has to be a styling tool or extensions).  I already have two straighteners, a clipless curling iron, and a hair dryer so I don’t need any more styling tools.  In addition, I am very picky with hair extensions so I wouldn’t buy those from that site anyways.

Overall, I was quite happy with this month’s selection of products.  My favourite was definitely the China Glaze nail polish.

What did you get in your Topbox?
