Falling for fresh skin: Three serums to try this fall

Ah yes, the fall season.

The sun goes down quicker, it’s chillier in the mornings and evenings, the leaves are changing, and our skin might be feeling drier. There is so much to be excited for in fall (hello #PSL), but usually around this time of the year I like to incorporate a little more TLC into my skincare routine.

Now I love and breathe serums. I have a pretty intense skincare routine (hi, eight steps), but having a serum has definitely been a life saver for my skin. A serum just adds a little more oomph. It is a more potent version of a moisturizer and helps to target a number of skincare concerns.

Now if you don’t use a serum, or are looking to switch up your serum routine, then I have some great recommendations for you. Some of these serums are new and are all great options for fall.

Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Concentrate Matrix

Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Concentrate Matrix

I’m a huge fan of Estee Lauder skincare, especially their Advanced Night Serum, so I was over the moon to learn that they just came out with a new Advanced Night Repair Eye Concentrate Matrix (C$98).

This eye serum has a gel-like consistency and glides on the delicate eye area to support the natural nightly renewal process. This is a refresh of the former eye concentrate, which includes some technology upgrades and a custom-designed stainless-steel applicator that precisely massages the eye area.

Apply this eye serum at night to boost skin cells, which is the body’s natural repair mechanism that works overnight to restore the eye area. The formula includes Chronolux Power Signal Technology that addresses the visible impact of micro-movements in the eye area. It also has a Youth-Generating Power complex to promote the natural production of fresh new cells, as well as collagen to improve elasticity and bounce. In addition to all that it also has antioxidants to protect against skin damage caused by environmental stressors.

This product is designed to be used at night and you can apply it on the lids, as well as under the eyes and the crows feet. As mentioned, it has a unique wand applicator that is great for application around the eye area. You can also use it on your “11’s” to smooth out that area of the face as well (the area between your eyebrows).

Laneige Perfect Renew Youth Serum

Another favourite skincare line for me is Laneige (hello Lip Sleeping Mask, so iconic!).

I’ve always been a fan of their serums and recently they introduced a brand new one, the Perfect Renew Youth Serum (C$79).

This serum is designed to address the five visible signs of early aging, including fine lines and wrinkles, dullness, and loss of firmness and elasticity. Laneige says you’ll notice results in as little as seven days, which is a huge claim, but one I’m definitely looking to put to the test.

The serum contains a number of powerful ingredients, including ginger root to visibly energize skin; tripeptide, which is a complex of three essential amino acids to improve the look of elasticity; as well as a superberry antioxidant complex, which boosts skin’s visible vitality.

I’ve been using this serum for a few weeks now and love the texture of it and how it makes my skin look and feel. I’ll be completely honest with you, I get Botox on the areas that are most prone to wrinkles and fine lines, so I can’t say if it actually works, but my skin looks smooth, supple, and soft and I recently had some skin issues when I got home from Montreal a few weeks back. I typically use this product at night but I don’t see why you couldn’t use it in the morning as well.

Like I said, I love Laneige products and I think this new one will be a staple in my skincare routine for the next few months.

L'Oreal Revitalift Night Serum with Pure Retinol

L’Oreal Revitalift Night Serum with Pure Retinol

It’s important to incorporate a retinol in your routine at least a couple times a week as you age.  I try to use retinol at least three times a week as it helps with anti-aging and reducing wrinkles, as well as smoothing out skin’s texture.

Now for most people, you won’t need an over-the-counter retinol product and thankfully so many drugstore brands now offer retinol serums with a safe percentage of retinol for the skin. One of these brands is L’Oreal Paris with their Revitalift Night Serum with Pure Retinol (C$33.96).

This serum contains 0.3 per cent pure retinol to visibly reduce wrinkles and smooth out skin.  Pure retinol is the most powerful form of retinol and is known to degrade, which means it becomes less effective over time, however, this formula by L’Oreal remains potent and you’ll experience visible results down to the last drop in the bottle.

With a retinol product you want to build up the usage, so maybe you would start once a week at night and then after a few weeks graduate to two nights a week, and so on.  With regular use you will experience smoother-looking skin, which also feels more moisturized and supple. Your complexion might also look brighter and more radiant, and wrinkles will improve.

Three serums to try from Estee Lauder, Laneige, and L'Oreal Paris

All three of these serums are great for night time use and since the weather get chillier when the sun goes down, they will be in high rotation this fall.  Since I only really wear makeup on the weekends now, I have been loving trying out and playing around with different skincare items and these ones are such a pleasure to use.

What have been your favourite serums for fall?
