Wear a mask: Three masks to try out this fall

Okay, so it’s a no brainer that with all this mask wearing, our skin is in need of some extra TLC.  Swap out your face mask for a different one full of skincare benefits that will help to protect your skin against “maskne” and other irritating factors.

I have an abundance of masks in my collection and truthfully, you can never really have enough. Just like other skincare products, every mask is different and there are so many different formulas out there that target different skincare concerns.

Every Sunday I like to put on a mask to help reset my skin for the week, but occasionally I will throw one on during the week as well in the morning to energize my skin for the day ahead.  I have a few here in Montreal that I’ve been rotating in and out, and if you are on the hunt for a new one, then keep reading..

Tula Detox in a Jar Exfoliating Treatment Mask

Being the Tula freak I am, when I pulled out their Detox in a Jar Exfoliating Treatment Mask ($48 USD) out of a box when unpacking my beauty products from New York, I was excited to find it in there. I’ve tried a few of their masks but wasn’t aware of this one, making it even more exciting to try.

This blue clay-based mask is geared to exfoliate and detox skin, leaving it noticeably smoother and softer.  It contains bentonite clay to exfoliate and draw out impurities, lactic acid to exfoliate and fight the look of dull skin, blueberry extract to hydrate and even out skin tone, turmeric root to reduce the appearance of inflammation, and probiotics to create a barrier to lock in moisture.

Apply this to the face, leave on for at least five minutes then rinse off to reveal bright skin.

Bliss In the Honey Mega Moisturizing Lavender Honey Mask

I’ve always had a thing for Bliss products after trying them out when I stayed at the W Montreal many many years ago.  I thought their products were so luxurious and delicious smelling, plus the branding is so cute.

The Bliss In The Honey Mega Moisturizing Lavender Honey mask ($16 USD) is an intensely moisturizing honey mask (making it perfect for the chilly temps on the horizon). It contains honey and lavender oil to give you an instant boost of hydration and super soft skin.

Apply this to your skin, leave on for five to 10 minutes then rinse off to reveal bright skin.  It’s great for super dry or irritated skin since it gets rid of dullness.

Other key ingredients include Acacia Honey, which protects against oxidative and environmental damage; honey extract to boost moisture and radiance; propolis extract to balance, heal, and soothe skin; squalene to prevent against moisture loss; cocoa seed extract to protect against damage; and lavender oil to calm the skin.

Apply this to your skin, leave on for five to 10 minutes then rinse off to reveal a bright and soft complexion.  It’s great for super dry or irritated skin since it gets rid of dullness.

Volition Beauty Detoxifying Silt Gelee Mask

Volition Beauty Detoxifying Silt Gelee Mask

The Volition Beauty Detoxifying Silt Gelee Mask (C$79) is one of those masks that does it all. This mask is packed with nutrients to address a variety of issues.  Pores looking and feeling clogged? Skin looking dull? Then this is the mask for you!

This mask contains black silt to cleanse and remove impurities from the skin, as well as plant-derived squalene to smooth skin and minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It also contains jojoba oil to hydrate and nourish the skin.

In case you aren’t familiar with Volition Beauty, their line is vegan, cruelty-free, gluten free and is reef safe (plus all their packaging is recyclable). This mask comes with a sponge as well that you use to help remove the product after it dries on the face.

Out of the three masks, this one does feature the grossest-looking formula (to be blunt), however it was designed that way since the brand says it takes dirt to remove dirt.

I know that when it comes to skincare, there are a million products out there, so adding more products into your routine may be a lot. I highly recommend picking up a mask or two to really give your skin some TLC, especially with all this mask wearing we have been doing.

Iconic lashes: Dior DiorShow Iconic Overcurl mascara

My lashes are Dior.

Okay, technically not, just you can say that if you’re rocking Dior mascara, which if you’re on the hunt to try one, then definitely get our hands and lashes on their newest formula.

Along with the new eyeshadow palettes and liners I chatted about on Wednesday, Dior also recently reinvented their famous DiorShow Overcurl mascara (C$37). DiorShow Iconic Overcurl mascara is known for giving lashes volume and curl, and the brand recently redesigned the packaging and formula, giving you 24 hours of wear and some hydration in your lashes.

This mascara features a curved brush to define the natural curve of lashes and fan them out with precise volume. Dior says that the formula lasts 24 hours on the lashes (although you probably shouldn’t wear mascara for that long) and will curl, define, and fan out lashes, making them noticeable and stunning. The formula is also enriched with cotton nectar to nourish lashes and make them softer, supple, and stronger.

The packaging itself is a stunner. This mascara is housed in a beautiful silver casing which features a band with the Dior logo cut out. It is on the heavier side but it’s truly a luxe mascara that will dress up any makeup bag.

This mascara is available in black, brown, and blue, as well as a silver glitter topcoat that is limited edition.

The brand sent me the black version to try out, as well as silver glitter topcoat.  I really like how the brush is curved, meaning that it fits the shape of your lashes beautifully. It’s really simple to get fanned out, voluminous lashes with this and the result is dark noticeable lashes.  I did try the topcoat as well, which is pretty and subtle, but totally not noticeable.  If you must have it in your life then I think you’ll like it. It’s not overpowering at all, more along the lines of “is she wearing a little sparkle on her eye?”

Overall I like this mascara and think it does a good job. Also, at C$37, it’s not too expensive in relation to other luxury brand mascaras out there.  If you are a fan of the original DiorShow Overcurl mascara then I think you’ll really love this one.

Makeup reinvented: Dior DiorShow Collection for 2020

When it comes to Dior makeup, there are a few items that are classic to the house, one of which is their 5 Couleurs eyeshadow palettes.

I’ve had a few of these palettes through the years and although they are super luxe, I haven’t really found them to be anything that special compared to other palettes out there that include more shadows and are more affordable. Don’t get me wrong, there are few brands as luxe as Dior, so you are definitely paying for the name as well, but their shadows have always been something that I found to be more of a treat rather than a necessity.

But now that’s all changed. Dior recently reinvented their 5 Couleurs formula and packaging to perform better and give it a new style.

This season, the 5 Couleurs palettes are inspired by a different Dior couture look. There are four palettes to choose from (C$62 each) and are housed in a brand-new palette with new colours and finishes. There’s Black Bow, shades of grey, white, and black; Denim, shades of blue; Mitzvah, shades of brows and coppers; and Rouge Trafalgar, shades of reds and pinks.

Aside from the packaging (which no longer come in the felt sleeve, which made it super fancy, but not really needed in general), these palettes come in new finishes: matte, satin, pearl, metallic, glitter, and highlighter, all of which feature fine and creamy powder with a lightweight feel. These shadows are also infused with aloe vera to smooth, as well as pine oil to soften, meaning that they are super gentle on the lids once applied.

The palette themselves are now larger and are opened via a silver button with the brand’s initials, CD, on them.  On on the centre shade inside the palette, the word Dior is embossed in the shadow, and they also have new applicators that come with the palettes as well.

The brand sent me two of the four palettes, Denim and Mitzvah, to try out.  Denim is inspired by the timeless casual chic style of jeans, and Mitzvah is named after Mitzvah Bricord, Christian Dior’s muse whose famous leopard print looks became iconic fashion statements.

Since I love browns and coppers, I instantly gravitated towards Mitzvah since that is a palette I can see myself wearing quite often. The first time I used it I did notice a difference in the formula compared to the old ones, I found these were a bit more pigmented and glided on the lids really nicely.  Although $62 is a lot for a five-shadow palette, I would say that the formula justifies the price a little more now since I do find the quality to be a little better than their old ones.

Dior DiorShow 24H Stylo Pencils

Pair their new palettes with their new DiorShow 24H Stylo pencils (C$37) which is a product that Peter Philips, the creative and image director for Christian Dior Makeup, came up with backstage. These pencils, available in 12 shades in both matte and pearl finishes, features a retractable tip that glides on the lids and accompanies these four palettes.

These pencils are waterproof and very pigmented. I have tried more creamier pencils than these, but I would say that these do glide on really nicely and leave you with nice and pigmented colour that lasts all day. Dior sent me matte black and matte blue, which is a dark navy, so it’s a nice change up if you still want something dark but not quite black.

This pencil also features a foam smudger on the other end if you want to smudge out the colour for a smokier look.

I really like these products and love that Dior is putting so much effort into reinventing their makeup line and making it better and better. There are so many amazing cosmetic lines out there so I’m glad that Dior is taking their most iconic products and making them even more amazing to compete with similar and even more affordable brands.

When it comes to Dior, I do think that you are mostly paying for the name when it comes to their makeup, but I do think that these products are really starting to compete with similar lines out there and the quality is starting to really stand out.
