It’s a summer thing: Five products that smell and scream summer

summer title I hate to say it, but summer is almost halfway over. Seriously though, where does the time fly since I feel like New Years was just last week…

Everyone has those products that just smell like summer. Whether it be coconut, the beach, or something more floral, there are so many beauty products out there that once I get a whiff of them, they just transport me to a place or time in my life.

Although many products bring back fond memories for me, here are my top five beauty items that just scream summer.

Batiste Dry Shampoo in Tropical

Batiste’s Dry Shampoo in the Tropical fragrance has a coconut and exotic fragrance that transports me directly to the front desk area of The Mirage Casino and Resort in Las Vegas. Las Vegas has been an annual tradition with my girlfriends and I, and we always stay at The Mirage, which infamously sprays a pina colada scent into it’s facilities. Every time I spray this stuff in my hair my heart starts to beat faster due to my love of the city and that hotel. I just close my eyes and pretend I’m there.

Summer products

Sun Bum SPF 30 Original Sunscreen Lotion

This is another product that just smells like summer (and with good reason since it’s sunscreen). I’ve never been to Hawaii, but I like to imagine that this is what it smells like. This sunscreen is a moisturizing formula that protects your skin and enriches it with Vitamin E. Like most of the other products in the Sun Bum line, it has that summery coconut smell to it. You’ll be slathering it on just to get a whiff of it.

Juicy Couture Viva La Juicy

Forever a favourite of mine, this perfume also reminds me of Vegas (probably because I picked up my first bottle of it at the Juicy Couture outlets there). Quintessentially summer in a bottle, this perfume combines scents of fresh berries with vanila and jasmine. Bathe me in it!

Olay Fresh Outlast White Strawberry & Mint Body Wash

What else would smell like summer more than strawberry and mint? This soothing body wash is designed to work with your skin’s natural pH, giving you nourished skin, all the while providing a scent that will have you in the shower for hours.

The body shop pinita colada

The Body Shop Pinita Colada collection

Having had too many pina colada’s this past April in Cancun, I was ecstatic to learn that The Body Shop was coming out with a collection dedicated to the pineapple and coconut cocktail.

Comprised of a shower gel, a body butter, and a body sorbet, this collection is summer in a bottle (plus the labels are sooo cute and bright!). Buy it for the tropical scent and then use it for the moisture.

Although I’ve been using these products on the ‘reg, I’ve also been obsessing over some edable items as well. Since we all want that summer bod, I’ve been adding Genuine Health’s new fermented Greek yogurt proteins+ protein powder to my morning and after-workout smoothies for a healthy kick.  Since this post is heavily focused on coconuts and pineapples (what can I say, I’m obsessed), check out this recipe for a creamy colada smoothie (aka the healthier version of a pina colada) using the fermented Greek yogurt proteins+.

  • 1 cup of full-fat canned coconut milk
  • 2 cups of fresh pineapple
  • 2 scoops of Fermented Greek Yogurt Proteins+ Vanilla
  • 2 tbsp ground flaxseed
  • 1 tbsp raw honey
  • 1 cup ice cubes

Directions: Add all ingredients into a blend and blend well. This recipe makes one serving.

I’ll be chatting more about Genuine Health’s new Greek yogurt protein powder this Friday, and be doing a giveaway, so check back at the end of the week!

Nourished nails: Sally Hansen Color Therapy nail line

Title Colour that also cares for your nails? Yes, please!

Forever being a huge fan of Sally Hansen polishes, their new line of lacquers got me intrigued. Colour Therapy, available in 33 shades, has a patented argan oil formula that infuses nourishment and moisture into your nails, making them more healthy.

The line consists of colour, a top coat, and a nail and cuticle oil.  Sally Hansen promises up to 10 days of fade-proof, chip-resistant wear.

close up

I got the top coat, argan oil, and one of the colours, Pampered in Pink, at the London Drugs Fall Beauty Preview last month in Vancouver. Like I said, being a huge fan of Sally Hansen polishes already, I was so excited to try this line out since I have thin, brittle, peeling nails. Since there’s no base coat, I just went in with the colour first, then the topcoat, then the argan oil once the polish was dry.

The colour ended up being very opaque after one swipe, however, it didn’t last that long on me. In fact, it chipped after a day’s wear.  When I eventually took it off, my nails didn’t look or feel any healthier.

Swatch

I have this polish on now to give it a second go, but first impressions aren’t the greatest. I love cuticle oil, so picking up that part of the line I would recommend, but it’s not anything that special and if you have a favourite cuticle oil already, then you don’t need to rush out and pick this up.

UPDATE: The second time around was much better and I think I know why. According to the instructions on the Color Therapy Nail & Cuticle Oil packaging, it says to apply this product before the colour.  Obviously you wipe it off prior to the nail polish, however, since it’s a greasy formula, this doesn’t let the nail colour adhere to the nails as well as a base coat or just bare nails.  For best results, apply the cuticle oil after the colour and topcoat.

I also want to note that compared to the Miracle Gel line, the colours offered in the Color Therapy line aren’t are jaw-dropping in comparison. They are very neutral, safe colours, which are great for lots of people, but I love more eye-catching, fun colours, so I don’t think I will be picking up more colours from this line. With that being said, I would be interested to test out the topcoat with a colour from one of their other lines, or really any other brand. Would I still get the same benefits?  Maybe I’ll give it a try and report back…

Have you tried the Sally Hansen Color Therapy line? What were your thoughts?

Please note, polishes provided by PR. All opinions are my own.

Under the rainbow: Festival-inspired colourful makeup look

Title makeup I’m still recovering from my Winnipeg Folk Festival high.. And no, not that kind of high.

The best part of attending a music festival to me is definitely the outfits. There are just so many fun things you can wear, and best of all, no one looks at you strange or judges; everyone is accepted.

To match the perfect outfit obviously comes a fun makeup look. Two out of the three days at Folk Fest I actually wore a more natural, glowy makeup look, but the first day I went for something a little more dramatic, a rainbow-inspired eye look.  I mean what screams more festival than rainbow eyes?

Final 1

I ended up loving this look because it’s smoky and totally daytime wearable as well if you just swap out the yellow for a beige in the crease.  Since the blue and purple that I used were so dark anyways, it can easily double as a smoky eye. This is also super affordable to recreate since I used the Makeup Revolution London Salvation palette in Unicorns Unite (I found the name to be most fitting).

1.  Steps Fill in your brows and then lay down an eyeshadow primer. I used the Kiss Top Brow Sculpting Brow Pencil and Kat Von D Lock It Eyeshadow Primer.

2. With the champagne colour from the Salvation Palette Unicorns Unite, apply that to the inner corner of the eye.

3. Next, using the same brush, apply a bright yellow over top of the champagne colour to the inner corner. I used a yellow eyeshadow from Inglot.

4. With the shimmery blue  from the Makeup Revolution palette, apply that over your lids, lightly blending it into the yellow so it’s a seamless transition.

5. Next, grabbing the purple beside the blue, apply that to your outer corner and blend the blue and purple together.

6. I wanted the purple to be a little more bright in tone, so I used the lavender colour from the same palette and went over the darker purple for it to pop.

7. Line your upper lash line with a black eyeliner (I used Marc Jacobs Beauty Fineliner in black). I have lash extensions, so I didn’t use mascara, but coat your lashes with a couple coats of your favourite mascara, and if you wish, pop on some falsies.

For the lower lash line, first line your bottom lash line with a cream purple eyeshadow. I used Maybelline Eyestudio ColorTattoo in Lilac Lust.

8. Create the same ombre effect over top of the cream purple shadow. First I put the dark purple on the outer corner, then the blue in the middle, then a mint colour from the Sephora x Pantone Universe Modern Watercolours Eye Palette before finally connecting it to the yellow in the inner corner. Apply a couple coats of mascara to your bottom lashes and then you’re done!

Final 2

I paired this look with glowy skin and a nude lip (MAC Creme de Nude).  Although this look may be more appropriate for an EDM festival as opposed to a folk one, I found that it worked perfectly with an all-black outfit. Plus, music festivals are all about just being yourself, so there’s no limits with how you wear your makeup or do your hair. You do you boo ;).

What’s your favourite makeup look for music festivals?
