Customizable colour: Make Up For Ever Artist Color Eyeshadows

We’ve all been there. We save our money to buy our dream eyeshadow palette, except there’s always a colour or two that gets zero love.

Sometimes I wonder why certain brands include certain colours, or even the process of curating a palette. Ever wanted to create your own custom palette? Well now you can!

In follow up to their genius Artist Color Powders, Make Up For Ever has come out with Artist Color Shadow, a new range of 121 highly pigmented, blendable eyeshadows that you can put in a refillable palette.

Make Up For Ever Artist Color eyeshadows

It looks like these have replaced the brand’s old eyeshadow formula and are available in matte, diamond, metallic, iridescent, and satin finishes and feature a smooth, pigmented wear for 12 hours. Best of all, you can create your own customizable palette thanks to a variety of different size options, such as single (C$24), duo (C$37, $46 value), trio (C$50, $68 value), quad (C$63, $90 value), and a six palette (C$77, $134 value).

Make Up For Ever reached out to me to create my own custom trio and I have to tell you, it was harder than you think. With a staggering 121 different shades in a variety of finishes I had to really think about what I wanted and use often. I was instantly drawn to M720, a matte apricot since it looked like the perfect transition colour, which is a must in my books. Since I’m always using matte browns for the crease, I went with M603, cinnamon, which is the perfect brown since it’s not too light and not too dark, making it perfect for both everyday wear and nighttime looks. Finally, I wanted to finish the look with a champagne shade, so I went with I524, pinky beige, which is super flattering on the lids and nice and basic for any look. The only thing missing in my opinion is a matte white for the highlight, but since I had three colours to choose from, I figured these three were staples, and perfect to do an everyday eye look.

So how do they perform? Well the first thing I noticed about them was how buttery soft they feel. They also blend like a dream and deposit colour on the lids with even the smallest amount on your brush. I’ve always enjoyed Make Up For Ever’s shadows in the past, but am really blown away by this new formula and I love how customizable the whole system is.

I highly recommend checking these out at your local Sephora. I’m not sure if all the shades will be available in store, but I can’t say enough great things about this system. Since the shadows have magnetic backings you can also buy a few if you have a Z palette, however, the more you buy the deeper the discount on them (the price include the actual palette).  The palettes themselves are quite slim, making this perfect for travel.

I mean really though, who hasn’t wanted to play makeup company for a day and create their own line? Thanks to Make Up For Ever, now you totally can.

Will you be trying out any of the Make Up For Ever Artist Color Shadows?

Good skin: Burt’s Bee Goodness Glow Liquid Makeup

Okay, so I know I literally just reviewed a foundation last week, but I just had to post about this sooner rather than later, because I think I found my new favourite drugstore foundation. And it’s from Burt’s Bees of all brands.

Random, right?!

So apparently, the skincare and lip balm brand released a series of makeup items not so long ago that includes a full range of products made from natural ingredients. I was sent their foundation for a photo on Instagram (not even by the brand might I add), and since I had it lying around anyways, I thought I would give it a try. After one wear, I was seriously impressed.

Burt's Bees Goodness Glows Liquid Makeup

The Goodness Glows Liquid Makeup is a full-coverage mineral foundation that leaves skin smoother and more radiant, with a natural, glowy finish.  Made with Meadowfoam Seed Oil, which is known to moisturize, this 98.9 per cent natural moisturizing foundation hydrates and nourishes skin, while giving you all-day wear. Available in 12 shades to match a variety of different skin tones, this is perfect for dry or combination skin.

I was sent 1025 Natural Beige, which is a touch too tan for my white winter skin, but I still managed to make it work. This is definitely a full-coverage foundation, but best of all, it makes your skin look luminous and smooth. After one use of this I noticed how radiant my complexion looked. After the second wear, I had friends commenting on which brand I was using.

Needless to say, this stuff is awesome. I love the fact that it’s mineral, which usually isn’t that much of a selling factor for me personally, but with that being said, if I’m able to put good stuff on my skin, I’m all for it. Also, natural makeup is definitely what people are looking for right now, and this foundation is formulated without parabens, phthalates, SLS, petrolatum or synthetic fragrances.

Now with so many positives, there must be something negative right? Well the only downside to this product that I can think of is the price. I can’t really seem to find any Canadian retailers who have this online just yet (not sure when the makeup line officially launches, or if it has launched already), however, it looks like it’s retailing for C$19.99 on the Burt’s Bees site, which is quite pricey for a drugstore foundation. With that being said, it was actually Walmart who sent me the product, so they will be getting it in stock (if they don’t have it at your local Walmart already), and they are traditionally affordable with their prices.

Still though, this is an amazing foundation, and I highly recommend it if you can find it.

Bright and blonde: Schwarzkopf Professional BLONDME hair products

The biggest problem with going blonde is actually maintaining the colour.

I’ve had some form of blonde in my hair for years now, but recently I chose to go with the full shbang and lighten up my locks all over. When I came home from the salon that day I was blonde-blonde, like verging on the edge of platinum blonde.  It’s been months now since I got that done (probably close to six months) and my colour has tarnished a little, going darker, and definitely in the need of some refreshing.

Now when you’re blonde you need special blonde shampoo and conditioner, which is usually purple or blue shampoo.  I’ve been using the Oligo Professionnel Blacklight Blue shampoo with the Aveda Blue Malva conditioner, which is a purple conditioner.  The combo of those products did the trick, but I didn’t notice that my colour was really wowing me lately.

Schwarzkopf Professional BLONDME haircare

I’ve always been a fan of Joico’s Blonde Life collection, so when Schwarzkopf Professional asked if I wanted to try their collection of products for blondes, I jumped on it.

BLONDME has been around for awhile, but they sent through the BLONDME Keratin Restore Bonding Shampoo, the BLONDME Keratin Restore Bonding Cleansing Conditioner, BLONDME Keratin Restore Bonding Mask, and the BLONDME Tone Enhancing Spray Conditioner.  Since I was travelling for a week a couple weeks back, my blonde definitely was looking like it hadn’t received any love in a while, so these products came at a great time.

The BLONDME Keratin Restore Bonding Shampoo is a rich, restoring shampoo to complete and maintain in-salon blonde colours. It gently cleanses without overloading untreated hair areas, helps to create new bonds, helps to create new bonds within the hair fibres, helps to smooth and condition the porous areas of lightened hair, and contains moisturizing Panthenol to balance the natural water content of the hair structure.  BLONDME Keratin Restore Bonding Cleansing Conditioner is a low-lather cleansing conditioner to maintain blondes. This gently cleanses hair and conditions it, as well as helps to create new bonds within the hair fibres.  It also helps to strengthen weakened areas of the hair structure and helps to detangle the hair. The BLONDME Keratin Restore Bonding Mask is a repairing deep-conditioning treatment to complete and maintain your blonde.  This intensively repairs the internal structure of fragile, lightened, and coloured hair. It also helps to create new bonds within the hair fibres. The mask also balances the optimum moisture level of porous, lightened hair and helps with detangling.  Finally, the BLONDME Tone Enhancing Spray Conditioner boosts luminosity for all blondes with golden shimmer pigments. It maintains and enriches the cool tone directions, detangles hair and improves comb-ability, provides strength and moisture, cools anti-yellow pigments for colour enhancement and neutralization, improves the texture of blondes, and more.

Schwarzkopf Professional BLONDME haircare

I couldn’t wait to hop in the shower to try out these goodies to see how nice my hair looked after using them.  I haven’t tried the cleansing conditioner yet, but I’ve used the shampoo, mask, and spray conditioner a few times and noticed after the first use how radiant my colour looked (as well as how nice in general my hair looked as well, I even had people complimenting me on it). None of these products are actually purple, aside from the tone-enhancing spray, but just like the Joico version, that doesn’t mean that it won’t radiate your blond.

Since I wash my hair only a couple times a week, I’ve been finding the mask to be my new holy-grail hair product, as it makes my blonde definitely look lighter and more toned.  My hair is noticeably blonder once I step out of the shower, which for damp hair, is definitely a feat.  Schwarzkopf says to leave it on for five minutes, so I tend to clean my shower to kill the time (I’ll also do a body scrub as well – five minutes is a long time!). I don’t find my hair to be as smooth once I rinse it out as other deep-conditioning masks, but I’ll gladly trade that feature in for bomb-looking blonde colour.

As for the BLONDME Tone Enhancing Spray Conditioner, this is a great product to use every time you wash your hair since you apply it once out of the shower on damp hair.  Although it is purple, it doesn’t leave your hair looking that colour (just like how a purple shampoo wouldn’t do the same thing). The purple helps to neutralize the blonde to bring out the tones in the hair.

Blonde hair using Schwarzkopf Professional BLONDME haircare

Since these are salon products, you can find them at Schwarzkopf Professional salons, as well as retailers like Chatters. I would say the star products from the line are definitely the mask and the spray, but I would recommend the shampoo as well to keep it all in the family.  Although I have so many hair products, I’ve been putting them all on hold as I’ve just been loving my results so far with BLONDME.

What is your favourite line for blonde hair care?
