Feathers: A festival fashion look

Title

With festival season in full swing here, it’s hard not to get caught up in all the fashion.  My local H&M is still stocking the brand’s Coachella collection, and just about every retailer have festival-inspired outfits to please just about anyone’s inner hippie.

I’ll be heading out to the Winnipeg Folk Festival (July 7-10, 2016 in Birds Hill Park) next month and after going last year, I can finally see what the hype is all about. Although I’m more into electronic music (I also went to EDC last year in Vegas), the Winnipeg Folk Festival, or Folk Fest as us Manitobans like to call it, was such a fun, relaxing atmosphere that I was asking myself why I’ve never been to it before.

The performance schedule is up via their official site, but aside from figuring out which artists I want to see and which stages they’re playing at, I’m still trying to plan what to wear on each day.

Bench Forest

I got this dress from Zaful and it features multicoloured feathers and a shorter length (it’s also super affordable!), making it perfect for listening to music underneath the hot summer sun.  I paired the dress with a cropped jean jacket from H&M as it gets cold at night, some gold bangles, and dressier flip flops.

For the makeup, since you’ll be spending all day outside, you want to keep it simple so nothing smudges. I went with Rimmel London’s Match Perfection foundation, Benefit’s Fake Up Concealer (so I don’t look tired throughout the day), Vita Liberata’s Trystal Tan for bronzing (an absolute must!), lots of highlight for a dewy look (Benefit High Beam and Becca Champagne Pop over top) and a nude lip (Kylie Cosmetics Gloss in So Cute).  I kept the eyes super simple since I tend to smudge the most around that area. I just popped a highlight around on my brow bone and since I have eyelash extensions, I just let those command the attention. I also applied some facial jewels from Sephora to give it a more boho feel.

Close up purple hair

For the hair, I sprayed it with some dry shampoo then braided a strip on the side. I also applied some purple temporary colour to an underneath section of hair for a pop of colour (ColorMe Lavender).

I have a few more outfits planned that I’ll be rocking at Folk Fest. I love this dress since I think it’s so music festival appropriate. Umm hello, feathers? Totally something to rock in the middle of a provincial park in the hot summer months surrounded by good tunes, good eats, and great people.

Dive in! Marc Jacobs Splash fragrances in Rain and Cotton

TITLE Marc Jacobs’ fragrances have always been a hit or miss for me. I love a more fruitier, floral scent, and I find his to be more masculine in nature. With that being said, I’ll never shoot down an opportunity to try out his new ones.

The newest Marc Jacobs fragrances are actually old scents, brought back for spring 2016. Available in Cotton, Rain, Pear and Cucumber, these originally debuted as limited edition scents about six years ago and I guess the demand was so great for them, that MJ just had to open the vault and bring them back.

I received two of the scents, Rain and Cotton, and both of them are bolder fragrances.  Available for C$65 each at Hudson’s Bay, these 100 ml fragrances have been all the rage lately on the blog rounds.

Fragrances

Rain is a captivating blend of wet-cut grass, sparkling wild strawberry, clementine, musk, teak wood and more. If you are into more masculine-smelling fragrances, take a look at this one since it’s base notes include teak wood, amber, musk, and oak moss.

Cotton is a more clean scent, and is designed to capture summer in a bottle. Top notes include peach, mandarin, bergamot, aquatic accord, with the base notes being white suede, blonde wood, and musk. Also a more poignant scent compared to what I usually like.

I haven’t given the other two – Cucumber and Pear – a sniff, but Pear has quite the following already. Although these aren’t my favourite scents, I really do like the design of the bottles. They are both a square with a thick black top. They look oh so cute on any vanity.

Have you tried Marc Jacobs’ Splash fragrance?

Please note, this set was sent by PR. All opinions are my own.

Coming soon… Makeup Revolution London coming to London Drugs

MR title

Okay, I have a confession to make.  After receiving the haul of all hauls at the London Drugs Beauty Event, I haven’t really dug into it all. I feel like most people would be ripping open packages and swatching everything and anything, but the stuff has just been sitting in its bag since I got home.

The truth is I don’t want to start using everything and then when it comes to photographing it, it doesn’t look pretty because it’s already been dipped into (#beautybloggerproblems). I knew upon returning home that the first thing I would getting my hands into would definitely be the Makeup Revolution London stuff.

Makeup Revolution London is a brand completely new to me. They are actually making their way into London Drugs locations this fall after first launching in the U.S. earlier this year. Their table at the event was one of the most exciting ones for me because they had so many palettes and highlights, and as soon as I walked up I was handed a large stack of makeup. I knew I loved the brand already.

Blush and highlight

Makeup Revolution London is a relatively new brand, having launched in March 2014. Every product looks very high-end, but retails for under C$20 I believe. They have everything from single products to palettes to brushes.

I received an assortment of palettes, as well as one of their highlighters. In fact, their highlighters were the first things I saw as I approached the table. Their Vivid Baked Highlighters (available in three shades) just look so shimmery that I had to swatch them on my hand to see how well they worked in real life. One swipe left me with beautiful shimmering colour and then I was told the price on these. Are you ready? Six dollars. Yes. Six Canadian dollars.

Contour and eyeshadow I was also gifted their baked blush palette and contour palette, and after swatching and using both of them, I can say that I can’t believe that these are both under C$20. Both of these palettes look like they would retail for C$50 and up, not the C$12 as quoted by the Makeup Revolution London site. I’ve always been a huge fan of the NYX contour kit since the price is amazing (around C$28), but MRL’s is around C$16 and includes eight powders (three bronzers, three highlights, and two baked shimmery highlights).

The other products I received were three of their eyeshadow palettes. The Revolution Ultra Eyeshadows, which includes 32 eyeshadows; the Unicorns Unite palette, which has 12 shimmer eyeshadows and six mattes in fun colours; and the Iconic 3 palette, which I was told was a dupe for Urban Decay Naked 3. I haven’t quite gotten to dipping my toes into all the eyeshadow palettes just yet, but I’ve used the Iconic 3 palette a couple times and the colours were quite pigmented and creamy. I did find the darker colours to be on the lighter side, but I would rather build up colour then it going on too dark in the first place.

Eyeshadow palettes

Overall, I still can’t believe that all these products retail for under twenty bucks. I think that once people see it popping up in stores they won’t believe their eyes either, mostly because the packaging makes it look very expensive.

For those of you in the states, you can find these products exclusively at Ulta.  Lucky for us West Coasters who have London Drugs locations, these products will be popping into LD locations soon.  I did ask about the east coast for my readers in Ontario and beyond and I was told that Rexall will be carrying them (double check your Rexall location though, I believe it was this booth that was telling me that).  You can also order from their official site as well.
