Buzzing beauty: Burt’s Bees Nourishing Mascara

In case you aren’t familiar, Burt’s Bees recently came out with a makeup line.

The skincare brand that boosts natural ingredients now offers up everything from foundation to lipsticks, blushes, and even mascara.  I tried their foundation a few months back and absolutely loved it, so I was very excited to give some of the other items a try as well.

The Nourishing mascara (C$13.97) is formulated with Jojoba oil and naturally moisturizing glycerin to nourish lashes (hence the name), and best of all, it doesn’t contain parabens, phthalates, SLS, petrolatum or synthetic fragrances, and is ophthalmologist tested, not tested on animals, and is cruelty free.

If you are into natural beauty, then this may be the mascara for you. The brush is a typical comb mascara brush that allows you to reach the very base of your lashes.  The formula dried down quickly and lashes don’t feel too stiff.

Now since I loved the foundation so much, I had high hopes for this mascara.  To sum it up, it didn’t impress me.  But here’s the thing, it’s called a nourishing mascara, not a volumizing one, not a lengthening one, it’s supposed to nourish your lashes, which is does.  And that’s about all. It didn’t give me great length, and honestly, this paired with an eyeliner, your lashes aren’t going to stand out at all.  I did try this with Smashbox’s new mascara, and paired with Super Fan, it gave me a little more length, but not anything stellar.

Overall, I would say that if natural beauty doesn’t intrigue you, then skip this. But, if you are looking for more natural beauty brands, then I would look into purchasing this since it’s so widely available and at a fair price.

Have you tried Burt’s Bees Nourishing mascara?

For mama: Three Mother’s Day gift ideas

Ah yes, Mother’s Day. A day filled wth brunch, flowers, and pampering mom.

I actually won’t be in town this year for Mother’s Day, but as always, I will still be getting my mom a gift this year.  Instead of just guessing what she would like (a mall gift card is always a good idea in her books), she usually just tells my brother and I what she wants every year.

If you are stumped on what to get your mom this Mother’s Day, I have a few awesome ideas that I’m sure your mum will love.

Callia flowers

Flowers

Okay, so this one is obvious and basic, but forget the usual grocery store bouquet and try out an online flower shop like Callia Flowers.

Available here in Winnipeg, as well as Calgary, Edmonton, and Greater Vancouver, this online flower retailer makes shopping for florals super easy. Just log on, choose one of their four set bouquets (which gets changes out every four to six weeks), fill out the card details, and voila! A farm-fresh, hand-tied bouquet will get delivered to your mom (or whomever you want to send flowers to), all thanks to the touch of a button (plus they have a 100 per cent Happiness Guarantee, meaning that if you are unhappy with your bouquet then they will replace it).

Each bouquet (standard size ones retail for C$49, mini bouquets for C$19, and deluxe size for C$69) comes in their signature turquoise Callia box, which also includes a card of your choosing, plant food, and more.  Some of the flowers actually come closed so they last for weeks. If you want to go above and beyond for mom, you could even sign her up for their subscription service, which is a set fee for multiple months of delivery (at a reduced rate per month).

Callia did reach out to me to talk about their services, however, I have actually ordered from them in the past and each recipient who got the flowers absolutely loved them. I like how it’s a set fee (rather than a marked-up holiday price), and you can pick the day you want the bouquet delivered (so for instance, take care of your Mother’s Day gift today by selecting May 13 as the delivery date, and boom, you’re done!). If your recipient isn’t home they can also leave it with a neighbour with a note on your door saying it’s next door. I’m sure your mom will be rushing over there to grab them as soon as she gets home from brunch ;).

Lierac Lift Integral Serum

Skincare

I think it’s safe to say that a lot of moms have mature skin.

My mom is constantly bugging me for anti-aging creams and serum, so skincare is always a good gift idea for really any holiday. Since I’m pushing 30, I’ve actually been incorporating a lot of anti-aging skincare items in my routine and one that I think mom will love is the Lierac Lift Integral line, in particular the Superactivated Lift Serum.

This anti-aging firming serum (C$105) contains two natural biopolymers for a tightening and lifting effect. It also contains lifting active ingredients, including mahogany extract and purple tulip extract coupled with the anti-aging Hyalu-3 concentrate. Use this after you cleanse and tone your face and before your nightly moisturizer for maximum benefits.

I was actually going to gift this to my mom for Mother’s Day, but then I started incorporating it into my routine alongside my Estee Lauder serums and have been loving how this makes my skin look and feel (don’t worry, I give a ton of skincare to my mom throughout the year). It is pricey, but serums typically are more money than a moisturizer, and a little goes a long way. Lierac also has a number of items as part of this line, including daytime and nighttime creams, a mask, and a eye lift serum.

Chloe Nomad perfume

Perfume

This one is a given. I mean, what mom wouldn’t like a new fragrance?

When it comes to scents, usually memories are attached to certain perfumes, but if you want to get your mom something a little different and create new memories then there are so many new perfumes to choose from. My top pick? Chloe Nomade.

Chloe Eau de Parfum has been a favourite of mine for years now, so I knew I would fall in love instantly with Chloe Nomade, and so will your mom! This one is a little more floral than the original Chloe, with keynotes of oak moss, freesia, and mirabelle liquor. It’s floral, but not as floral as Gucci Bloom. I would classify it as more woodsy than flowers. It’s definitely a powerful scent, but soft enough that it’s not overpowering.  It’s one of those fragrances that mom will be able to smell on her all day and instantly cheer up her mood. Heck, she’ll probably think of you while she wears it, and since it’s such a beautiful aroma, you’ll probably sneak a few spritzes of it as well when she’s not looking.

Scent aside, the bottle is inspired by the brand’s famous Drew handbag, complete with suede tassels.  This clear bottle with rose elixir will look wonderful on mom’s vanity.  You can find it at Sephora, Shopper’s Beauty Boutiques, or Hudson’s Bay for C$122 (50ml) or C$154 (75ml).

Aside from flowers, skincare, and perfumes, other great gifts of course include something DIY, a new purse, or a day at the spa. Honestly though, I’m sure mom will love whatever you get her.

What are you getting your mom for Mother’s Day?

Locked & loaded: Three hair products you need this spring

When it comes to haircare, I have way too many products for one person.

I don’t know what it is, but when it comes to shampoo and conditioners, hairspray, hair serums, you name it, I just get so excited to try out new products.

Since I have an entire shelf in my cabinet dedicated to hair products, I thought I would throw together a guide for the top-three products you need to try out this season. For the colder months, I usually just stick with my normal shampoo, conditioner, split-end tamer, and serum (and of course hairspray for when I curl my hair), but the warmer months usually have me styling my hair higher with more just-got-home-from-the-beach curls.

Here are my top-three choices of products you need to bust out this season.

Joico Body Shake and Beach Shake texturizing sprays

Joico Beach Shake and Body Shake Texturing Finishing Sprays

If you’ve tried Joico’s original Hair Shaker, then you’ll love these.

Available in two new formulas, Beach Shake and Body Shake, these texturing finishers will add major volume and definition to the hair.

Designed for the perfect, imperfect beachy locks, Beach Shake adds texture to your hair, but without the usual dry, salty finish. Instead, this product delivers hydrating ingredients to deliver a satin sheen, all while drying quickly. The formula is infused with coconut and sunflower seed oils combined with bee’s wave for nourishment, hydration, and shine. Hair feels touchable and smells great thanks to its tropical fragrance.

The Body Shake Texturizing Finisher adds volume to the hair, while absorbing oil, so hair is full of body and texture. I love this one in particular since it gives your hair some volume when sprayed at the roots, as well as texture if sprayed at the mid-to-end of the hair shaft. You can also use this to achieve some of those stylish messy, modern waves that are oh so in for summer.

L'Oreal Paris Colorista Electrics

L’Oreal Paris Colorista Electrics

I chatted about the L’Oreal Paris Colorista Spray One-Day Colours last week and also new are electric shades to the regular range.

Available in three colours, lime green, hot pink, and turquoise, these just scream music festival to me. Unlike the sprays, you apply this directly on your hair using the glove and brush and the colour lasts anywhere from five to 15 shampoos. I’ve reviewed Colorista in the past and always enjoyed how it made my hair look and feel (very soft, unlike the sprays). These three new shades are designed for highlighted, light blonde, or bleached hair.

If you are into neons, then definitely take a look at the three new electric shades in the range.

Revlon Uniq1 Dry Shampoo

Revlon Professional Uniq One Dry Shampoo

Take your dry shampoo to the next level with Revlon Professional’s Uniq One Dry Shampoo, which gives you 10 benefits in one product.

This multi-use product cleanses your hair without water, refreshes and revives locks, absorbs oil, helps to preserve colour by reducing washes, provides hair with a fresh scent, leaves minimal residue, extends the life of your hairstyle, is easy to use, adds volume, and leaves you with a natural finish.

Okay, so maybe all 10 points are typical of any dry shampoo but I do quite like this one since it doesn’t make my hair feel overly starchy and leaves behind a nice refreshing scent. You can find this in a full size and a travel size, perfect to toss in your pool or beach bag!

Let me know what you’re planning on incorporating into your hair routine this spring.
