Red-y for fall: Sally Hansen Red/esign collection

There is something so classic and feminine about red nail polish.

If you are a huge fan of reds (honestly, it’s suitable for any occasion), then you’ll want to look into Sally Hansen’s new redesigned Complete Salon Manicure collection, which includes nine shades of red nail polish.

In case you haven’t tried Complete Salon Manicure (C$8.97 at Walmart Canada), this line is made of a keratin complex formula for stronger nails and delivers up to 10 days of chip-free wear.  I’ve tried out a ton of colours in this line and really love the formula in the polishes since they deliver opaque colour in one stroke (usually) and are chip-free for more than a couple days.

This new collection features nine shades of red, with five new colours in the mix (Cherry Delightful, red-Handed, Oh So Lava-ly, Berry Fancy, Belle of the Ball) . Sally Hansen says that the Cherry Delightful colour is the most universal of the bunch, suitable for a number of skin tones.

I swatched each and every one, and although I don’t have a fave, I was struck by how much I loved each and every colour. A few of them were very similar, but for the most part, if you are looking for a classic red, then you’ll definitely find one in this bunch.

The real showstopper of this line is definitely the brush. It features a contouring brush that easy deposits the colour on the nails in a simple, smooth, and streak-free application. I usually use a base coat and top coat, but I believe that you don’t actually need one for this line.

When it came to actually swatching these, although the colour went on great with one stroke, I did find that they subtly stained my nails, so therefore I did have to do a polish a day to test and photograph these. I mean usually you wouldn’t actually try on nine polishes in the span of an hour, so this wasn’t a huge deal, but I thought I would just mention it in case that would be something that you would look out for in a polish.

Overall I really liked this collection. I’m not a huge red person (in both polishes or lipsticks), but red is so classic and timeless that any of these shades won’t go out of style anytime soon (or ever, really).

Bold + bright: Mary Kay Matte Lipstick

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, you can never have too many matte lipsticks.

Although my formula of choice is a liquid lipstick, sometimes I like to wear a traditional lipstick formula since it’s easy to remove and is typically more comfortable to wear.

I received the limited-edition Mary Kay Matte Lipsticks about a month back and couldn’t wait to try out these bold colours. Available in four shades, the brand collaborated with the most influential trendsetters in Milan to bring consumers a uniquely designed lipstick. This is their most matte formula and it delivers some major pigment-packed colour.

If you are looking for something more subtle to wear, then this is not the collection for you. The colours include Puro Mirtillo (deep burgundy), Grazie, Violet (violet), Orange Mio (bright orange) and Roma Red (tomato red).

Each shade goes on quite opaque and the colour does wear well.  The colours are very bold, so if you like wearing bright shades, then this is definitely the collection for you.  Are these any different though from other matte lipsticks out there? To be honest, they didn’t really awe me. I have so many matte bold lipsticks in my collection and these compared to others out there. I wish they would have included a nude in this collection since that’s so easy to wear, especially when it’s a traditional lipstick formula, but I guess they were going with a theme in this collection and they stuck to it.

If you are looking for a bold lipstick to change up your routine and like Mary Kay products, then I would look at giving these a shot. They do what they are billed to do, but they aren’t anything too unique. The colour does last a long time on the lips and although they are matte, they are very comfortable to wear.  You can order them through a Mary Kay seller and they retail for C$20 each.

Lashes 2 kill: Physician’s Formula Killer Curves mascara

You can never try out too many mascaras.

I’ve been on this drugstore mascara kick lately and honestly, I’ve been so impressed with what these brands have been releasing as they really have taken things up a notch over the past few years.

I recently reviewed a couple new Physician’s Formula items and have been impressed with what the line has been releasing. I haven’t really used much from the line over the years, but always have been so intrigued by it since the ingredients they seem to use are so innovative.

Anyways, this brings me to today’s post where I tried out the Killer Curves mascara. This mascara, which was gifted to me by London Drugs (C$14.99), is a volumizing mascara available in two shades, black and black/brown, that has lash-lifting polymers and collagen to provide a combination of curl and volume. Since it seems that Physician’s Formula products always aim to do the body good, it also contains provitamin B5, polymers, collagen, amino acids, and peptides.

As for the brush, you apply this mascara thanks to the slight hourglass-shaped wand that coats and sets every lash; yes, even those tiny ones on the corner. For me, when it comes to what I like in a mascara, the brush is a huge factor and I found this brush to be the perfect size to coat each lash, leaving them looking fuller and longer.

Overall, I think this mascara does the trick. It worked well for my lashes as they did look more voluminous. I do like the fact that it contains vitamins, so you are actually nourishing your lashes as you wear this.

Is this mascara any different from other drugstore formulas out there? I think it compares to a lot of my favourites, but it didn’t strike me as being a memorable mascara. I would put it in my “it did the trick” pile, but it’s not anything extraordinary.

Before and after using Physician's Formula Killer Curves mascara

It left my lashes long, curled, and noticeable, and when it comes down to it, that’s all you really need for a mascara.

Have you tried Physician’s Formula Killer Curves mascara? Let me know your thoughts.
