Fitness Fridays: Protein pancakes

pancake title

Being on a huge health kick lately, my co-worker Jen sent me her recipe for protein pancakes.  Now whenever I hear about protein pancakes, I always think that it includes protein powder, which I tried and didn’t end up liking (I’ll give it another chance eventually). Her recipe was super easy, low in sugar, and didn’t include a lot of stuff.  In my books, it was already Shayna approved.

These protein pancakes are so simple, it’s stupid.  All you need are egg whites and quick oats.  I throw in some cinnamon to add some flavour, but you can add other ingredients as well if you choose.

Here’s how to make them:

  • 1 cup quick oats (I get mine from Superstore/Loblaws, the no-name brand)
  • 12 egg whites (typically it’s two tablespoons for one egg white, so 24 tablespoons)

ingredients

In a bowl, mix the two ingredients together and then add any other mixings you want (bananas, applesauce, cinnamon, blueberries, strawberries, etc).  Heat a non-stick pan and spray with Pam or any other non-stick cooking spray.  Pour some of the batter onto the pan and after a few minutes flip over.  And that’s it!

With this recipe I can make on average, around seven pancakes.  I’ll usually have one or two for breakfast the day I make them and then put the rest in tinfoil and bring them to work for the week.  During the work week I’ll usually just have one (heated up and plain, nothing on it) and eat it over the course of an hour with a coffee.  Surprisingly it keeps me full until lunch.

Here are the nutritional facts:

egg white facts oat facts

Based off seven pancakes (and these two particular ingredients):

  • 57 calories per pancake
  • 7.14 grams of protein (per pancake)
  • No sugar

The nutritional information in these pancakes are amazing and because of the oats, you feel full for quite some time.  After discovering how yummy, healthy, and easy these are to make, I’ve given up my beloved Special K Morning Shakes (which according to my co-worker were full of sugar anyways) and am going to be eating these for breakfast from now on.

Like I said, I eat them plain (although I do add cinnamon to the mixture), but you can add some syrup on top or peanut butter.  If you make them let me know what you think of them!

Spring sniffs: My favourite fragrances for every occasion

perfumes

When it comes to choosing a perfume in the morning, I have more than enough options to choose from.  Between the full-size bottles and hundreds of samples, I always have a scent on hand.

I have had the opportunity to try out a whole whack of different fragrances, but I have quite the number of full-size bottles.  Depending on how I feel, I’ll reach for one fragrance over another.  Here are my favourite scents for any occasion.

Fun and flirty: Viva La Juicy by Juicy Couture

I received a vial of this in a Sephora VIB bag and fell in love it.  I picked up a full-size bottle at the Juicy outlet in Vegas (on sale!) and have been in love ever since.  The scent is so flirty and summery, and best of all, reminds me of Vegas (always puts me in a good mood).

Notes (from Sephora):

Wild Berries, Mandarins, Honeysuckle, Gardenia, Jasmine, Amber, Caramel, Vanilla, Sandalwood, Praline.

Work-friendly: Christian Dior Hypnotic Poison

This sultry, mature scent is subdued enough for daytime, and tantalizing enough to rock at night.  I tend to wear this more during the winter months because it’s a muskier scent, but I have been still rocking it considering the snow here doesn’t seem to want to melt.

Notes (from Sephora):

Bitter Almond, Caraway Spice, Sambac Jasmine, Cinnamon, Tuberose, Vanilla, Musk, Mosses, Jucarunda Wood.

Girly: Britney Spears Fantasy

I have had this one for awhile and although I don’t wear it that often anymore, I still die every time I smell it.  This perfume literally smells exactly like cotton candy.  Rock it at an amusement park or on a date, it’s sugary-sweet scent will leave you feeling young at heart.

Notes (from Amazon):

Top notes of Lychee, Quince & Kiwi; middle notes of Cupcake, Jasmine & White Chocolate Orchid; finish of Creamy Musk, Orris Root & Sensual Woods.

Fresh: Escada Moon Sparkle

Although this scent isn’t available anymore (it was limited edition for 2007), Escada releases a similar scent every summer but just changes the name and colour of the bottle (this year it’s called Cherry in the Air).

I always find the Escada limited edition summer fragrances so fresh and sweet to wear that they are often my most reached-for scents. There isn’t an occasion I can think of that I wouldn’t wear this fragrance for.  A must-have for sure, check out the newest limited edition Escara perfume next time you are at your local Sephora or department store.

Just a note, Amazon.com still has Moon Sparkle in stock if you are interested in ordering it.

I can’t find the notes of this particular fragrance, but here are the notes from the 2013 limited edition, which are often quite similar (from Sephora.com):

Black Cherry, Raspberry, Mandarin, Marshmallow, Gardenia, Coconut, Sandalwood, Oakwood.

Expensive: Angel by Thierry Mugler

This iconic perfume may just be my all-time favourite scent.  I remember receiving a sample vial of this when I was a teenager and I have been wanting a bottle of it ever since.  This musky, sexy fragrance always reminds me of a department store; to me, it’s like Neiman Marcus in a bottle.  I finally got my bottle of this holy water last year but I don’t wear it that often, mainly because it’s a strong scent.  Because it’s a perfume (as opposed to an eau de toilette), it goes on strong.  One spray can be overpowering at times.  With that being said though, it’s one of those fragrances that is so distinctive that when I smell someone wearing it I have to comment “is that Angel?”, and it always is.

Notes (from Sephora):

Bergamot, Hedione, Helional, Honey, Dewberry, Red Berries, Vanilla, Caramel, Patchouli, Chocolate, Coumarin.

Mature: Chanel No. 5

Another icon, and no doubt the most famous fragrance in the world, this perfume was released almost 100 years ago (in 1921).  Although it does smell, and I hate to say it, like grandma, there is something so elegant and timeless about the scent that no matter the age, anyone can wear it.  I tend to reserve this scent for only special occasions, but I truly think it’s the one fragrance I can think of that should be in everyone’s collection.

Notes (from Fragrantica):

Top notes are neroli, ylang-ylang, bergamot, amalfi lemon and aldehydes; middle notes are iris, jasmine, orris root, rose and lily-of-the-valley; base notes are vetiver, musk, sandalwood, patchouli, oak moss, amber, vanille and civetta.

What are some of your favourite scents?

Also, one more thing, just a quick nails of the day post.  I’m sporting Sally Hansen Salon Effects in Stripe-Tease, which is totally cuter on than in the package.

Smooth shave: eos shave cream

shave title

With warmer weather comes shorts and bikini season.  I don’t think it’s just me, but I find when the weather is warmer, my leg hair tends to grow a lot faster than it does in the winter months (is that too much info?).  Anyways, I tend to find that I am shaving my legs every week in the summer.

Being a huge fan of the lip balm and hand cream, eos has released their 24-hour moisturizing shave cream.  Available in three fragrances (pomegranate raspberry, vanilla bliss, and sensitive – fragrance free), the eos shave cream retails for an affordable C$3.99 at Rexall, London Drugs, Loblaw’s, Jean Coutu, and Uniprix.

The eos shaving cream is packed with natural conditioning oils, shea butter, and vitamins C and E, and softens and smoothes your skin for a full 24 hours.  It can be used on either wet or dry skin and is paraben free and not tested on animals.

pump

I haven’t used shaving cream for a number of years because I tend to use razors that have a shaving cream bar built in.  With that being said, I have always loved the feeling shaving cream gives you once your legs are freshly shaved; I’m just lazy and like skipping the step.

I tried out the sensitive-fragrance free one, although the other two looked incredibly appealing.  It is recommended to use two to three pumps of the product, which I did.  The product goes on quite sheer and smooth on your legs; it’s not thick like other shaving creams I have tried.  Personally, I like a thicker shaving cream because I love how it feels on my legs, plus I feel like it does a better job overall.  With that being said though, shaving cream is shaving cream and this left my legs hairless and smooth.

As for 24-hour moisturizer, my legs didn’t feel dry after a full day went by but I just don’t get the benefit in that claim.  Like, why only 24 hours?  Why would you need your legs moisturized for just 24 hours?  After 24 hours should I apply a moisturizer?  I don’t know, I just find that benefit really odd.

holding jar

Like other eos products, the bottle is smooth and ergonomical, which is a huge plus for me.  I’m one to judge a book by its cover, so if the bottle of a product looks cool, I’ll usually buy it (I’m a sucker for branding).

Overall, just like any other eos product I have tried, the shaving cream does it purpose and it’s a quick fix to a problem.  My legs did feel moisturized a day after I tried it and it’s quite affordable, so if you are in the market for a new shaving cream, try it out.

Have you tried the eos 24-Hour Moisturizing Shaving Cream?

Please note I was sent these products for review purchases, however, all opinions are my own.
