Bright & beautiful: Three Vitamin C serums from Skinceuticals

Cleanser, toner, eye cream, serum, retinol, moisturizer, spray, lash treatment, lip balm… the list goes on and on when it comes to skincare.

I have a pretty rigorous skincare routine that includes a lot of products. Doing my day and night skincare routine is actually one of my favourite things to do and it sets the day ahead/calms me before bed.  Just when I thought I couldn’t add any more products into the routine, along came Vitamin C.

I recently attended a Zoom event with Skinceuticals talking about their serums and their newest innovation, the Silymarin CF.  I have tried Skinceuticals serums before and really loved them, but didn’t really know a ton about them. I just knew they were good (and they were Skinceuticals, so I knew I would love it).

Skinceuticals Vitamin C serums

Skinceuticals currently has three Vitamin C serums in their line up, CE Ferulic, Phloretin CF, and now the Silymarin CF serum.  I’ve used Vitamin C serums before, but prior to this call I didn’t actually know the importance of adding this to my routine.

Adding a Vitamin C serum into your morning routine is important since it is known to prevent and correct signs of aging, sun damage, and uneven skin tone and texture.  Of course not all Vitamin C serums are the same though and it really depends on what your specific skin issue is to find the right serum for you.

So want to find the right Skinceutical Vitamin C serum?  Don’t worry, I got you!

Starting first with CE Ferulic, this serum (C$190) is ideal for normal to dry skin. You would apply this in the morning (they recommend four drops) and helps to combat aging, sun damage, fine lines, and wrinkles.

The formula contains 15 per cent L-asocorbic acid, which is a highly potent form of pure Vitamin C that helps to protect against oxidative stress while providing visible anti-aging benefits.  It also includes one per cent alpha tocopherol, which is a form of Vitamin E that neutralizes free radicals and replenishes skin lipids.  It’s been proven to work well with Vitamin C.  Finally, it also has 0.5 per cent ferulic acid, which is a plant-based antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals and enhances the benefits of Vitamins C and E.

CE Ferulic is one of the brand’s most iconic products and although I’ve used it before, I wasn’t quite sure what it did. Now that I know more about the science behind it, I have been incorporating it into my daytime routine every morning.  I can’t wait to see the results in a few months once I’m done the bottle.

If uneven skin tone is more your concern and you have normal to combination skin, then take a look at Phloretin CF (C$190), which also combats aging, sun damage, and discolouration.

This serum helps to protect the skin against advanced environmental damage and includes two per cent phloretin, which is a natural product that neutralizes damaging free radicals and helps to improve cell turnover, as well as improve the appearance of discolouration.  It also has 10 per cent L-ascorbic acid and 0.5 per cent ferulic acid.

Apply four drops in the morning every day to help accelerate cellular turnover and refine the skin’s texture.  It also helps with atmospheric aging, as well as aging caused by the sun’s rays and environmental pollution.

Finally, their newest product, the Silymarin CF (C$190) is a Vitamin C ideal for those who suffer from breakouts or acne.  This serum is specifically formulated for those who have oily and blemish-prone skin.  It is proven to reduce oiliness, refine skin texture, and visibly improve skin clarity and fine lines.

Skinceuticals Silimarin CF vitamin C serum

This serum contains 0.5 per cent silymarin, which is milk thistle extract that helps to prevent oil oxidation and provides antioxidant protection against free radicals. It also has 15 per cent L-ascorbic acid, 0.5 per cent ferulic acid, and 0.5 per cent salicylic acid, which refines pores and helps to prevent skin against breakouts.

Skinceuticals says that with regular use, this serum can prevent breakouts from happening since it targets oil oxidation.  It also will reduce oiliness, refine skin texture, minimize pores, and visibly improve skin clarity and fine lines.  Although I don’t have acne or suffer from many breakouts, this serum will come in handy to prevent maskne. You can also use it as a spot treatment as well or just apply it to the lower half of the face if you want it to go a long way (which, at $190 a pop, this isn’t something you want to rush through).

I am forever a changed woman and definitely see the benefits of adding a Vitamin C serum into my daytime routine. Right now I’m using the CE Ferulic serum but have the Silymarin CF on hand for backup as well.

These serums are very pricey but Skinceuticals is a medical-grade skincare brand that is only sold at medical clinics or retailers who specialize in these kinds of products.  I like getting my Skinceuticals items from Wonder Skincare, which is Canada’s first online medical skincare clinic.

I believe that you can’t put a price on good skin, so if you can afford it, I would say to go for it. Believe me, you and your skin won’t regret it.
