The lash diaries: Benefit They’re Real! mascara

I finally got around to trying a mascara that’s been on my must-try list for a while, Benefit’s They’re Real!

I have always loved Bad Gal Lash by Benefit, in fact it was probably my first high-end mascara.  Over the years though I have lost the love for my beloved Bad Gal Lash and fell in love with other mascaras from different brands.

I have had a couple samples of They’re Real! lying around here and finally wanted to just bite the bullet and try it out.  I have heard so many good things about this mascara so I wanted to see if it would knock my socks off.  And it did.

What it is:
A jet-black mascara that lengthens, curls, volumizes, lifts, and separates lashes for a spectacular “out-to-here” look. 

What it does:
This mascara features an exclusive brush specially designed to maximize the performance of the long-wearing, glossy formula revealing lashes you never knew you had! Staggered bristles grab close to the root, boosting length and volume beyond belief. The precision bristles on the custom-domed tip lift, define, and curl even your tiniest lashes. The end result is luxurious, silky lashes that won’t smudge, clump, or dry out.

The wand is similar to It Cosmetics Hello Lashes but has more bristles to it.  It has a slight ball at the end that really lets you get in there and coat every. single. lash.  I wouldn’t say my lashes looked fake, but they looked pretty amazing.

As always when I try out mascara for my blog, I curl my right lashes (left in the photos) with my shu uemura eyelash curler and then leave my left ones au natural to see what the curl is like and if a curler actually makes a difference.  For this mascara it didn’t really make a big difference, also my left lashes are fuller and longer for some reason so honestly, it’s hard to even tell because they are so different in terms of length and fullness to begin with.

After one coat I was amazed, and then after the second, I ran to my mom and was like “mom, look at my lashes!”.  They looked full and fabulous.

Benefit really hit it out of the park with this mascara.  I would even say it’s better than Bad Gal Lash.  I have so many mascaras and samples to use up, but I definitely think this is will become a staple in my collection.

It Cosmetics Hello Lashes 5-in-1 mascara

Always on the lookout for mascaras that will make my lashes look like falsies, I was sent It Cosmetics Hello Lashes 5-in-1 mascara.

I have been a huge It Cosmetics fan for a few years now and have loved practically every product I have been fortunate to try, so I was excited to try their mascara, which I have heard numerous good things about.

Hello Lashes 5-in-1 Treatment mascara utilizes technology to infuse a blend of lash-enhancing and conditioning ingredients, including peptides, collagen, proteins, acai, jojoba, green tea, and vitamins A, C, E, and B5. Hello Lashes is paraben-free, fragrance-free, phthalate-free, and sulfate-free.

This mascara is marketed as doing practically everything aside from thickening out your lashes.  It’s a volumizing mascara (it claims to make them look 430 per cent longer); a conditioning, hydrating lash primer; a lash-enhancing serum; a lash tint; a lash comb/curler; it walks your dog; it does your grocery shopping; and it even can give you a ride to work in the morning. Those last three were jokes, but you get the idea, it does a lot of stuff.  Like most, if not all, of It Cosmetics products, it was formulated by leading plastic surgeons, so you know it’s legit.

They say the wand is innovative but I feel like there are a few mascaras on the market now that are similar, like Benefit’s They’re Real!.  The wand features a ball at the end so you can coat every lash, even those small outer and inner corner ones.  Once you apply the product you are supposed to push your lashes up with the end of the wand so the lashes stay in place throughout the day.

So thoughts on the product.  I actually really do like this mascara. Aside from the luxe packaging (every detail counts) I love how the wand gets every lash, even those darn outer corner ones.  So, if you wanted that cat-eye effect, this is the mascara is perfect for that.  I don’t think my lashes look 430 per cent longer, as they would probably be up to my hair line if they did, but it definitely makes them stand out.  I just wish it made them look thicker, that’s the only qualm I can think of other than the fact that after two coats my lashes feel extremely stiff (probably so they stay in place better).

So would I recommend this mascara?  Yes!  This is an excellent mascara and if you are looking for one that gives you that flirty look and coats every single lash this would be it.  I did layer it with Lancome’s Hypnose Star for a night out on Saturday to get some extra oomph and my lashes really did look long and bold.

If you are interested in this mascara, in Canada you can pick it up through The Shopping Channel where you get two of them for $29.  It’s also available through QVC in America for the same price (with the duo).  $29 for two mascaras, that a pretty good deal; keep one and give the other to a friend or hold onto the other for backup.

The best time of the year: Sephora birthday gift 2013

title copyMy birthday isn’t until a couple months away but if you are anything like me and love free stuff, then you are signed up for numerous company email newsletters, rewards cards, etc. I will buy certain products at certain stores if they have a rewards card; I love accumulating points.

I have been a Beauty Insider at Sephora since before my local city had a store.  I have never traded in my points for a 100 or 500 point perk yet (the ones that interest me always sell out really fast) and I’m currently close to 2,000 points (it’s a dollar a point).  I’m now at VIB status so as you can imagine I shop there quite often.  Regardless of the points perks (you can get samples or even full-size products sometimes when you redeem them), I love receiving their birthday gift every year.  Last year’s birthday gift was the Fresh Mini Sugar Lip Treatment which was great because I probably would have never tried those products and for this year it’s one of my favourite brands, Benefit.

The complimentary gift (you just show your Beauty Insider card during the month of your birthday at Sephora) is called Real Birthday Turn-Ons and consists of a mini sample of their They’re Real! mascara and Watt’s Up, a highlighter.  I haven’t tried either of these products yet (I already use Benefit’s High Beam and I have another sample of They’re Real! which I haven’t opened yet), so it’s a great way to test them out.

If you are not a Sephora Beauty Insider, run, don’t walk, to your nearest Sephora (or Sephora.com) and sign up, it’s completely free, and make sure you show them your card when you check out.  You can also upload your card on Passbook on your iPhone so you don’t have to have it handy.  If you spend $350 in a calendar year you get upgraded to VIB status which gets you a couple more perks, like higher discounts during their events, more samples, 10 per cent off one purchase when you become VIB, etc.

I have a couple friends who have recently gotten into makeup (because of me, no doubt) and they are first-time Beauty Insiders.  I personally love the program and since it’s free to sign up, you might as well take advantage of all that it offers.
