Bright and bold: my picks for summer 2012 nail polish

Summer is coming up and the nail polish is changing from dark neutrals to bold, fun shades.  Bright colours are on trend this season and I personally am obsessed with blue-toned hues.  Here are some of my picks for this season.

Deborah Lippmann Girls Just Want To Have Fun

With Pantone introducing Tangerine Tango as the colour of the year, oranges and corals are totally the shades to rock this summer.  This colour looks fab in the bottle and the juxtaposition between this Deborah Lippmann all star and a tan make a beautiful combo.

OPI Fly

This beaut came out earlier this year as part of the Nicki Minaj collection but the shade easily translates into summer.  I am seriously obsessed with this colour, it’s the perfect blue; it’s bright and bold, but not a  bright colour as in a neon pink or a bright green.  If you can still find this shade, pick it up.  SpaRitual also makes a similar colour called Indigo, which is part of their summer 2012 Pigment collection.

From L-R: OPI Fly, China Glaze Aquadelic, Urban Outfitters Hot Tub, Essie Mint Candy Apple, Deborah Lippmann Girls Just Want to Have Fun

China Glaze Aqudelic

This hue may seriously be my favourite colour this year.  In the bottle it doesn’t look that special, but paint it on and wow, I could wear this days on end.  The shade is almost the exact colour as a Tiffany’s box but bright and louder.  It’s definitely a head turner.

This one came out with China Glaze’s Electro Pop collection earlier this year so if you can’t find it, a close dupe would be CG’s For Audrey.

Urban Outfitters Hot Tub

Although I think that every season should have a hot pink in its collection, Urban Outfitters Hot Tub is perfect for summer 2012.  The colour radiates in the bottle and even more when it’s painted on.  The shade is perfect for the beach, pool, or, you guessed it, hot tub.

Essie Mint Candy Apple

Mint green was hot last year and the colour easily transcends into the current season.  This is the first minty green I own (I also have Essie’s Absolutely Shore, but that’s more of a seafoam green), and according to an Essie rep, it’s one of their most popular shades for the summer.  The look is so fresh and clean that you could really wear it anywhere.  If you in the mood for this kind of shade, pick this one up.

From coral to hot pink to a whole whack of blue-toned shades, I think this summer is going to be full of bright, fun shades, a lot of which can easily be transferred into other seasons.

NOTD: Essie Mint Candy Apple

Mint green was a super hot trend last summer, with basically every nail polish company promoting a shade.  I didn’t get a chance to pick one up but it’s been on my list for a while.  I attended a beauty trade show a couple of weeks ago and Essie had a booth there so naturally I was attracted to it like a fly on light.  I was actually eyeing this shade before I went to the booth and when I talked with a rep she said that Mint Candy Apple is the most popular colour right now.  That pretty much sealed the deal, so I picked up a bottle.

Mint Candy Apple is more vibrant than Essie’s Absolutely Shore, but not as blue-toned as China Glaze’s Aquadelic.  It’s also not as turquoise as Essie’s Turquoise and Caicos.

The polish applies quite streaky but I got it pretty opaque after two coats.  It also has lasted me a few days before some minimal chipping.  As always, I used Seche Vite base coat with OPI Top Coat.

If you are in the market for a mint green, I would definitely recommend this one.  I personally haven’t seen it in stores so I’m not sure if consumers can still pick it up.  My bottle of this polish was different from the other Essie bottles I own, maybe because this one is for salon use?  I did buy it directly from the distributor.  If you can’t find it in stores, maybe try a salon that uses Essie, you might find it there.

Have you tried Essie’s Mint Candy Apple?  What were your thoughts?
