Essie Naughty Nautical summer 2013 collection recap

main title

I’m getting a little naughty this summer with Essie’s new collection, which launches in June.  I did separate posts on each shade but I wanted to do a final recap to sound off on my thoughts about the collection.

The line comprises on six shades, some safe ones (a lilac and pale blue), some fun ones (coral, emerald, and magenta), and a daring one (lime green, hello!).  Five of the six have silver shimmer in them which is actually quite noticeable once painted on, and the sixth one, the lime green (The More The Merrier) is creme.

Naughty Nautical – marine blue-green shimmer
The More The Merrier – juicy lime green
Sunday Funday – tangerine coral crush shimmer
Full Steam Ahead – pearlescent punch lilac
The Girls Are Out –  fuchsia peony sparkle
Rock The Boat – shimmering french blue

For each swatch I used the same base and topcoat combo, OPI’s Nail Envy and Poshe top coat.  Pretty much all the colours aside from The More The Merrier (which is the only non-shimmery one) lasted a day before chipping, so that was a bit disappointing.

As for colour selection, there are some stand outs in the collection and some I would skip.  I loved Sunday Funday, The Girls Are Out, Naughty Nautical, and The More The Merrier.  Rock The Boat and Full Steam Ahead are colours that can be easily duped and not really anything unique in my opinion, plus Rock The Boat is so similar to last year’s Bikini So Teeny, so if you own that one I would for sure skip this one.

Overall, the Naughty Nautical collection is fun, bright, and the pop of shimmer in the polish adds something extra to this warm collection.

NOTD: Essie The More The Merrier

green polish title

Break out the margaritas because the more the merrier!

The last shade from the Essie summer 2013 Naughty Nautical collection saga is The More The Merrier, a juicy lime green colour that is the standout of the bunch.  Unlike the other shades, which all features shimmer, this one is a crème finish that screams summer.

When I received the colours from this collection this one stood out the most to me, so I decided to try the best for last.  Don’t get me wrong, I love all the colours but I tend to naturally gravitate towards bright, fun colours, so my heart was all a-flutter when my eyes landed on this beauty.

L to R: OPI Who the Shrek Are You, OPI Did It On ‘Em, Essie The More the Merrier

When I first saw this it reminded me greatly of both OPI’s Did It On ‘Em and Who The Shrek Are You, but when I compared all three, the OPI colours have more yellow undertones, whereas The More The Merrier has green undertones to it.  They aren’t exact dupes but they are similar.

I used two coats to get the colour opaque (although on my right hand I used three coats), with OPI Nail Envy as my base and Poshe as my topcoat.  One of my besties tried this shade out and it chipped for her a day she applied it.  For me, it has lasted three days thus far without chipping.

Overall, this is a unique colour for this collection because it’s so different.  It’s definitely a summer shade, and if you don’t own anything similar to this I would pick this one up for sure.

NOTD: Essie Full Steam Ahead

title purple

TGIF! Perfect for the weekend is the “safest” colour from the Essie 2013 summer Naughty Nautical collection.

Full Steam Ahead is a lively lilac with silver shimmer.  Although not the most unique polish in the collection, this one is uber pretty on the nails.

I feel like Essie puts out a few different lilacs every year and it should definitely be a staple in everyone collection. If you don’t own a polish in this shade already, pick this one up, the silver shimmer adds a bit of dimension and uniqueness to the lacquer.

I did compare this to Nice is Nice from their A French Affair summer collection from two years ago, but that one is a creme finish (aka no shimmer) and a greyer in tone.

I used OPI Nail Envy as my base with Poshe top coat to seal my mani.  Although I only needed two coats, I used three to see if the polish would last a bit longer on my nails before chipping.  It lasted two days before a couple nails chipped :(.

Although this isn’t the most unique colour in the collection, if you don’t own a lilac polish, this one would be a great one to pick up.  It’s safe, so therefore you can wear it to really any occasion and always be on trend.
