Orange crush: Make Up For Ever Aqua Rouge in 17

title orange One of my favourite colours for summer is orange.  Now being a huge lipstick fan, I’ve never felt that I could pull a Kourtney Kardashian and rock an orange lip.  Then Make Up For Ever released their new summer line of Aqua Rouges.

I was sent #17 from their Aqua Rouge collection which is a rich mandarin orange colour.  It was a double-whammy for me, not only have I never sported an orange pout, but I’ve never tried Make Up For Ever’s Aqua Rouge products, which is a double-ended liquid lipstick that provides intense, long-lasting, waterproof colour.

I’ve seen Aqua Rouge’s in store but for some reason always thought they were glosses, which doesn’t really make sense to me now because there is a clear gloss on the end.  I was expecting the consistency of MAC’s Kissable Lip Colours, but instead, the product was more like an OCC Lip Tar.

The coloured side is applied with a doe-foot applicator and the colour truly is “what you is what you get”.  Number 17 is a wham bam thank you m’ame kind of orange.  At first the liquidy and then it sets matte to a gorgeous hue (plus the scent of roses add an extra touch). If you wish for a bit of a glossy sheen, paint on the clear gloss from the other end.

These are billed as being very long lasting so I put them to the test on my birthday.  I applied the product around 9 a.m. and finally removed it around 5:30 p.m.  It went through eating, drinking, a eucalyptus steam, a mineral pool, and rain.  By the end the colour was still vibrant along the edges of my lips and a little worn off towards the middle.  I really had to work with a makeup-removing towelette to remove what was left.

Overall I am very impressed with these and will definitely be picking up other colours.  The colour payoff and longevity is amazing.  As for #17 from the collection, this is my first orange and I love it!  I’ve been sporting it with just some mascara and bronzer for a summery, pool-side look.  Well, that and big shades, a hat, and a white blouse.

Colour of the year: Make Up For Ever Aqua Cream in 52

title green

In case you have been living under a rock for the past few months, Pantone, the leading colour authority, announced at the beginning of this year that the Colour of the Year is emerald (my birth stone!).

About a month ago, Make Up For Ever released their summer line which includes a few new Aqua Creams, one of which, number 52, is emerald (well, pearly green lagoon as per Make Up For Ever).

Box Closed case open case bottom

In case you aren’t familiar with MUFE Aqua Creams, they are a cream shadow that is creaseless, waterproof, smudge proof, and just all around amazing.  They are super creamy in the pot but then once they are applied they don’t budge.  They are great as a base or just worn alone.  You can also use them as a cream blush or a lip product, although I don’t really recommend this colour for that use (unless you are into green lips and cheeks).

Although green may be a bold colour, it is perfect for summer.  I have a yellow Aqua Cream and I wore that alone with some waterproof liner and mascara last summer to the pool and pool parties and it was perfect because it stayed as vibrant at the end of the day as it was when I first applied it.

Emerald is so hot for this year and there are so many ways you can wear this.  You can sport it alone or layered under a green shadow or even as a liner.  Plus, the hint of gold shimmer adds that extra bit of glam to this product that it’s certainly eye-catching once applied.

Do you plan on trying Make Up For Ever’s Aqua Cream in 52?  Tried it?  What were your thoughts?

Spring sunset: a tutorial

Title tutorial Inspired by the Yabi eyeshadow in Copperwire I received in my May Topbox, I was feeling like creating a bronzy sunset-inspired look last Friday night.

Here are the steps to create it.

Steps

1. Starting with the eyes, apply a bronze cream eyeshadow to your eyelids, creating a base.  I used Maybelline 24-Hour Color Tattoo in Bad to the Bronze.

2. Moving to the crease first, apply a dark brown eyeshadow into the crease area with a fluffy crease brush.  I used the darker colour from the NARS Cordura palette.

3. With a copper eyeshadow, apply this to your lids.  I used Copperwire from Yabi Cosmetics.

4. Apply a liquid or gel liner, winging it out.  I used Lancome Art Liner in black.

5. Curl your lashes and apply some generous coats of mascara.  I used three different ones because I didn’t pop on falsies, It Cosmetics Hello Lashes, Clinique Lash Power, and Rimmel ScandalEyes Curve Alert.

6. Moving onto the face, first prime then I did a triple whammy with cream contouring.  I first applied a light-coloured concealer under my eyes, on the bridge of my nose, and on my chin.  Then, with a cream bronzer, I applied this on the hollows of my cheek bones, my temples, and under my chin.  With a beauty blender and some foundation I mixed it all together.

7. Back to the eyes, with the same bronze cream shadow, apply this with a pencil brush along your lower lash line.

8.  With a lighter brown eyeshadow, go over the cream shadow.  I used the lighter colour from the NARS Cordura palette.

9. With a white eyeshadow, or in my case a cream one, apply this to the inner corners of your eyes.  I used Rimmel London ScandalEyes Eyeshadow Stick in Witness White.

10. Fill in your brows using either a pencil or eyeshadow with an angled brush.  I used Buck from the Urban Decay Naked one palette.

11. Apply a black eyeliner to your waterline.

12. Going back to your brows, apply that same white (or a nude) along your brow bone to open up your eye area.

13. With a pink blush, sweep this on your cheeks.  I used Angelika from NARS.  Finally (and not shown) apply a highlight along your cheekbones.

final 2

I hope you enjoyed the look!

Also…. happy birthday to me!! I turn the big 2-5 today.  Eek! Getting old.

Finally, here are some recent Instagrams (follow me at @shayna_apopofcolour) from the last few weeks :).
