Through the looking glass…

title

So if you are clueless about fall trends, or need a little inspiration, Procter & Gamble (P&G) Beauty has launched a YouTube page to create some inspiration and runway-ready looks perfect for fall.

P&G_LACREME_Katrina_5_2467 My favourite from the bunch included this Looking Glass look, called Undone Glamour, which features a loose side braid and nude and pink makeup.

From P&G: This feminine statement is the ultimate in effortless beauty. Match a touchable loose side braid with cool texture to the pastel makeup trend; think pale pinks and lavenders. Get soft matte-coloured eyes and lips that will spell out one word: Pretty!

Total swoon, right?  So like any beauty blogger, I just had to recreate it and then post it on my blog to share with all of you.  The YouTube page does include a step-by-step guide on how to do this exact look, but I just swung with it and did my own stuff.

Here’s how to recreate it.

Steps

Before we get into the steps, start off with freshly washed hair.  I used Pantene Pro V’s new Everlasting Ends shampoo and conditioner, which prevents up to 95 per cent of split ends before they start.  I was sent these products, however, these two actually left my hair feeling so soft.  If you suffer from split ends like me, pick this stuff up.  Seriously.

1. While your hair dries, we are going to start with the makeup.  Lay down an eye primer (I used Too Faced’s Shadow Insurance), and then with the Covergirl Dance Party trio, apply the lightest pink to the insides of your eyes, blending it towards the centre.

2. With the middle colour from the palette, apply this from the middle to the outer corners of your eyes.

3. With the darkest colour and your blending brush, apply this to your crease.  I found this palette was really light, so don’t be too scared to really layer it on.

4. With a black eyeliner, like Covergirl’s Liquidline pencil liner in black, line your upper lash line, slightly winging it out.  My favourite pencil liner is Make Up For Ever’s Aqua Eyes, but for being a drugstore one, this worked really well; it went on super smoothly.

5. Curl your lashes and apply a few coats of mascara.  I used cult-classic Covergirl’s Lash Blast Volume mascara in Very Black.

6. Now for foundation, apply a full coverage foundation all over your face.  I used Covergirl’s Outlast Stay Fabulous 3-in-1 foundation, which I actually ended up loving.  I used the colour 910 Classic Ivory.

7. Conceal under your eyes, hiding dark circles and brightening the area, with a concealer that is a shade lighter than your skin tone. I used Covergirl + Olay Concealer Balm in 310 Fair.

8. Set everything with a powder foundation.  I used Covergirl & Olay Pressed Powder in 320 fair/light.

9. I did slightly contour using Covergirl’s Clean Glow bronzer in Spices, but this look is all about the rosy cheeks.  Lay on a pink blush, like Covergirl’s Cheekers Blush in Classic Pink.

10. The lips!  Apply a nude pink colour on your pout to bring the look together.  I used Covergirl’s Lip Perfection Jumbo Gloss Balm in Ballet Twist (this is a must have!)

Now for the hair…

11. Apply a split ends tamer to your ends to protect them.  This is a must in my books.  For this look I used Pantene’s Everlasting Ends Split Fix Creme.

12. For heat protection, smoothing, moisture, frizz control, flyaway taming, and a bunch of other remedies for your hair, apply Pantene’s Ultimate 10 BB Creme.

13. For some volume, lay on some mousse to your roots. I used Pantene Stylers Extra-Hold Mousse.

14. With a comb, create a deep side part.

15. Blow dry your hair, making sure to lift your roots to set the volume.

16. With a teasing comb, create some volume at the roots.

17. Bring your hair over to one side and braid it, the looser the better.

18. Pull some pieces out and then curl them.  Spray everything and you are set!

final 1

I hope you enjoyed the look and let me know if you tried it out.  Also, don’t forget to head over to P&G Beauty’s Looking Glass page.

The essentials: Skincare gift guide

skincare title

I’ve made my list, have you?

Although makeup is usually my first priority when it comes to cosmetics, skincare is an equally important necessity (okay, it’s probably more important than makeup…).  Just like how cosmetic companies bring out special collections, sets and items for the holiday season, so too does skincare brands.  From mud masks to cleansers to lip balms, not only are these great gifts, but if you are in the market for a new moisturizer (or mud mask), now is the time to stalk up because these sets are usually really great value for what you get.

Here are my top picks for the holidays.

Glam Glow Gift Sexy

open box

Housed in a chic reversible box (you keep opening it and it turns from pink to blue), GlamGlow’s Gift Sexy holiday set is a great way to try two of their most beloved masks.  I did a review on these about a month back, but this set features a 1.2 ounce of their uber-popular Supermud Clearing Treatment and a 0.5 ounce of their Youthmud Tinglexfoliant Treatment.

These masks have fast become cult favourites because of their ability to make your skin look younger and bring on that “supermodel glow”.  If you were to purchase these separately, it would run you C$90; so for C$75, this set is a more affordable way to try out the brand.

GlamGlow Gift Sexy is available at Sephora.

Boscia Mask Medley

Boscia masks open box boscia

If you are looking for a more affordable mask set, Boscia has you covered.

This set of three 30-gram peel-off masks work to purify, brighten, and hydrate your skin for a flawless complexion.  Unlike GlamGlow, these peel off your face, so make sure you apply these liberally.  They go on like a gel and then set on your skin.

This was my first foray into peel-off masks, as well as the Boscia brand.  I have heard a lot of great things about the line, and I think that for C$46, this set is a really great bang for your buck.  I tried out the Luminizing Black Mask one first and although I did find the product hard to peel off (I didn’t apply enough), it did make my skin look fresh.

Here are some stats from Sephora:

After four weeks of using Bright White Mask twice a week:
– 81% said their skin appeared more radiant
– 86% said their skin appeared more moisturized
– 86% noticed an overall improvement in their skin

After four weeks of using Luminizing Black Mask twice a week:
– 91% said their skin felt softer
– 91% said their skin felt less oily
– 82% said their skin appeared brighter

The Boscia mask medley is available from Sephora.

Josie Maran Escape to Morocco Holiday Hair & Body Beautifiers

josie maran

If you are a Josie Maran, or just an argan oil fanatic, this set is for you.

Like Boscia, I haven’t ever tried anything from Josie Maran’s uber-popular brand, but I know other bloggers and YouTubers rave about her argan oil-infused products.

The Escape to Morocco set includes:

– 1.9 oz Argan Cleansing Oil
– 0.5 oz Argan Infinity Intensive Creamy Oil
– 0.5 oz Argan Oil Hair Serum
– 0.5 oz 100% Pure Argan Oil
– 1 oz Whipped Argan Oil Intensive Hand Cream in Vanilla Apricot
– 2 oz Whipped Argan Oil Body Butter in Vanilla Apricot

This is a great sampler set to try out her products (which all smell amazing by the way).  I have only heard great things about her 100 per cent pure Argan oil, as well as the Infinity Intensive Creamy Oil.

Josie Maran open set

Argan oil is a plant oil produced from the kernels of the argan tree, which is from Morocco.  It’s an amazing moisturizing oil for both hair and skin, it’s also full of vitamins and antioxidants.

Because this offers a variety of products for different parts of the body, this is an amazing set to give or receive.  Plus, Josie Maran is known for her argan oil products, so you will certainly impress anyone on your list lucky enough to receive it.

C$47 (and $81 value!) from Sephora.

Shu Uemura Cleansing Oils

shu cleansers

One of my holy grail products, Shu Uemura cleansing oils are a must.  These aren’t the easiest products to find (they only sell Shu at select Sephora locations in Canada, as well as Holt Renfrew, and online; in the U.S. you can only get it online), so I was so excited that Canadian Sephora stores brought in minis of these beauties (located near the checkouts).

I tried the Shu Uemura cleansing oils for the first time last year and it was love at first use.  You just rub a few drops of this stuff on your dry face and then rinse, and voila! Makeup is removed and your skin is left feeling rejuvenated and fresh.  What is the difference between these and a regular makeup remover?  These aren’t as harsh on the skin and retain the skin’s natural level of moisture.

Everyone knows the Japanese brand for their iconic eyelash curler, but they are super well-known for this product as well.  So much so, that one bottle is sold every seven seconds.

A 450 ml bottle of their cleansing oil can run you anywhere from C$82 and up, but if you are looking for a stocking stuffer, these 50 ml bottles retail for C$19 (I believe, Sephora online doesn’t carry them).  Yes, it’s pricey, but your skin, or whoever you gift these to, will thank you for it.

shu sizing

Size compared to a 250 ml bottle of Bioderma.

There are a variety of different kinds available, I received four of them to try out, and according to the PR company that represents Sephora in Canada, this is the Cleansing Oil Mini Collection, which retails for C$55.  I haven’t seen this at my local Sephoras (just individual bottles), but I know that the location at Toronto Eaton Centre has a Shu Uemura section, so they may have it.

Anyways, about the oils (from Shu Uemura)…

Philosophy Shower Gel Sweets and Pink Almond Candy Lip Balm
philosophy

One of the yummiest-smelling brands out there, Philosophy has some delicious offerings for this holiday season.

Okay, so first off, who doesn’t always need body wash?  This super cute ornament set includes 12 single-use shower gels that multi-task as a body wash, shampoo, and bubble bath.  Each gel is 0.25 oz. includes two of each of the following delectable scents: Christmas Cookie, Pink Almond Candy, Sweet Fluffy Cupcake, Pink Grapefruit, Homemade Honey Buns, and Raspberry Glazed.

For C$23 you can either gift this set as it is, or break it up and split it among friends!

Also, from Philosophy, they are offering up the creamiest of lip balms.  Infused with their Pink Almond Candy scent, this Sephora-exclusive delectable lip balm will smooth even the driest of lips.

Priced at C$19, it is a bit pricier than other balms (especially compared to eos, which the design of this really reminds me of), but it’s actually the creamiest balm I have ever tired. The scent is alright, I can definitely think of other fragrances they have released that I would prefer, but this little guy can cheer up even the grumpiest of grinches.

From masks to cleansing oils to luxury lip balms, there are a variety of different holiday sets and products to brighten up anyone’s holiday season!  Do you have a skincare wish list item on your list?

Jolly ho! Benefit holiday sets

Benefit title

Ay carumba! Benefit has released some rad sets this holiday season!

I love, love love Benefit’s holiday collections because they offer minis of their bestsellers that gives you a great way to try out the brand.  I still have minis from two of their holiday sets from a couple years ago that I still use to this day.

The super-fun brand come out with a bunch of different sets for this holiday season, and although there are some blasts from the past that we all know and love (like a lipgloss set and a beauty bestsellers kit), there are some fun new ones as well (including an advent calendar!).

I received two of the sets, Groovy Kind of Love and Let’s Make Lovely. package open materials

A Groovy Kind of Love is a complete kit for complexion, eyes, lips, and cheeks.  The set is housed in a chic tin that has four eyeshadows, two blushes, plus three minis of their bestsellers: the POREfessional, They’re Real! mascara, and Benetint.  The set, which retails for C$43, is a great way to introduce anyone to the Benefit brand and it really does highlight some of their top products.  For me, this one includes some makeup must haves, so it’s perfect for anyone, whether you are just trying out Benefit or have used some of these in the past.  For those who haven’t tried They’re Real! or The POREfessional, these are stellar products that I have used and loved.  They are sample size, but they do last a long time; I myself am still using my They’re Real! from my Sephora birthday gift (that one is 3.0 g, whereas the one in this set is 4.0 g).

Wearing the Groovy Kind of Love eyeshadow quad, They’re Real! mascara, Benetint with Dandelion and Gimme Fever mixed together on my cheeks. Also used The POREfessional primer under my foundation and Hoola bronzer as my contour.

looking-down-1024x687

This set is available at Shoppers Drug Mart and Murale in Canada; I don’t believe you can buy it at Sephora.

Let's make lovely

If you are looking for something more along the lives of a stocking stuffer, Let’s Make Lovely is a more affordable set (C$27) and features four samples of Benefit’s best-selling products, including Hoola bronzer, They’re Real!, The POREfessional, and It’s Potent! eye cream.

I have either full sizes or samples of each of these products already and I can honestly tell you that these are must haves for anyone’s makeup collection.  They may be sample sizes but they do last a long time, especially It’s Potent! (a little goes a long way) and Hoola (I have a couple sample blushes from two years ago that I haven’t even hit pan on).

I am a bit mixed about this set, only because of the price.  I feel like $27 may be a bit too pricey for what you are getting (for example, you get two samples free with your Sephora birthday gift).  On the other hand, the samples do last a while; I just feel like $21 would be more reasonable for this set.

compare

The minis compared to their full-size counterparts (aside from They’re Real! as I don’t have a full size of that.)

If you can justify the price, this set is perfect as a small gift or a Hanukkah gift (it starts early this year, at the end of November!).

Between the two sets, I would definitely go with A Groovy Kind of Love because for a little more, you get more products and it’s housed in a super cute tin.

Like I mentioned earlier, Benefit also has a few different sets for the holiday season aside from these, including an advent calendar which will no-doubt be a huge bestseller.
