A passion for pinks: my top pink choices for spring!

Pink title

I thought I found my spring go-to lipsticks when Maybelline released their Buffs collection, but then I came across my weakness and I caved.

Baby pinks and nudes are my jam.  Although I will sport the occasional red, dark, or magenta lip, there’s nothing like a baby pink to brighten my day.  It’s so sweet, but sexy at the same time.  I do have quite the collection of various shades, but I’m such a sucker that as soon as a spot a new one, I cave.  It doesn’t matter if I have a couple already that are dupes, if I see it, I must have it in my life.

I picked up two new baby pinks within days of each other (Hi, my name is Shayna and I have a lipstick problem), and I am obsessed.  Although it may be too pale for some, baby pinks are so perfect to sport once the weather gets nicer (or for me, year round).  It’s still -40 degrees Celsius (#WinnipegPeopleProblems), but a pink pout usually warms my mood, no matter what the thermostat says.

Covergirl yummy Covergirl

My first obsession is an affordable one.  CoverGirl Lip Perfection Lipstick in Yummy.  This blue-toned pale pink goes on quite sheer but is buildable.   I have a few CoverGirl lipsticks already, but I haven’t come across one that I would normally reach for/a staple in my collection.  Then, I spotted Yummy during the Beauty United Grammys party and I knew I had to have it in my life.  Prior to this one, I hadn’t really come across a drugstore baby pink that I would recommend to people, but then I got Yummy.  It’s seriously just as cute as it’s name.

For those unfamiliar with CoverGirl’s Lip Perfection lipsticks, they are super buildable and incredibly moisturizing. Because this shade in particular is so light, I do find that I have to reapply it often, but honestly, I find that with a lot of light-coloured lipsticks, no matter the brand.

Lipsticks MAC swatch

My second obsession is one that I was a little hesitant blogging about, only because it’s part of a MAC limited edition collection.  Rose Lily, a lustre lipstick is part of MAC’s current collection, A Fantasy of Flowers, which is full of pastel-shades and perfect for spring.  Basically I saw this, tried it on, and was like I really don’t need another pink lipstick… and then my mom bought it for me the next day (thanks mom!), so I guess it was meant to be.

Because this shade is a lustre, it goes on sheer but you can build it up.  It’s also quite glossy, so it’s a double whammy, colour and gloss!  This particular shade is sold out online, but when I bought it from my closest MAC counter (which is probably the most popular counter in my city), they had three left after I got mine.  The MAC store had a whole bunch and that was a week after the collection released.  If you are interested in picking this colour up, call your local counters.

Swatches

MAC Rose Lily on top, CoverGirl Yummy on bottom.

I did swatch the two colours to see if they would be dupes and no, they aren’t exactly the same. CoverGirl Yummy is a bit darker than MAC’s Rose Lily, but if you are craving a baby pink and Rose Lily is sold out, try CoverGirl’s version, it’s more affordable and I find both of them to be really moisturizing.

What’s your go-to shade for spring?  Have you tried CoverGirl’s Yummu lipstick and MAC’s Rose Lily?

Cleansing oil conundrum: L’Oreal Paris Sensational Cleansing Oil

Cleasning oil title When it comes to removing hard-to-get-off makeup I live and swear by my beloved cleansing oils.  Ever since I first tried out the Shu Uemura cleansing oils back in 2012, I was seriously hooked on the stuff.  You apply it to your dry face, work it into your skin, apply water, and watch as all your makeup melts away, leaving you with refreshed, clean skin.

I love my Shu cleansers so much that I haven’t even bothered trying another brand, as why reinvent the wheel, right?  Well, L’Oreal Paris has been stepping up their game recently and introduced a number of new products that are putting their department store counterparts a run for their money.

L'oreal cleanser

Recently introduced, the L’Oreal Paris Sublime Radiance Sensational Cleansing Oil removes traces of makeup and impurities to reveal skin that looks hydrated, sublime, and glowing.  The oil formula removes traces of makeup — yes, even waterproof — for your face and eyes.

So how does it compare?  The texture is about the same as the Shu cleansing oils and it’s about the same colour as Shu’s Ultim8 Sublime line.  I used two pumps of the product, which was enough to remove everything. I typically use my Clarisonic Mia with my cleansing oils to really penetrate the product into my skin, but for the purpose of this review, I just used it the regular way.

In comparison to the Shu Ultim8, I would say they are very similar.  They both removed my eye makeup and foundation, although I did have some makeup on the cotton pad once I used my toner for both products.  My skin definitely looked as radiant after using the L’Oreal version compared to the Shu.

Loreal Shu

What about price?  Well, for C$11.99, you can’t beat it, especially since the 150ml of a Shu cleanser can cost $49 and up (closer to the $100 range when you want the 450ml bottle).  At 150ml, it’s does give Shu Uemura a run for its money.  I do want to mention that the Shu cleansing oils are full of botanicals that benefit your skin, and come in a whole range of different formulas depending on skin type.  So no, they aren’t exactly the same, however, if you were just looking for a cleansing oil to remove makeup and make your skin more radiant, the L’Oreal version definitely does the trick.

Eyes to kill: CoverGirl Bombshell mascara

Title

A couple of years ago I was a lash extension fanatic.  I would get my lashes done every month for about a year until I realized that that $50 or so I was investing in little hairs could be better saved for my future condo (which I finally put a downpayment on last year).  I then decided to just purchase expensive mascaras as they would be better bang for my buck, plus I kind of missed the act of applying mascara.

Fast forward a few years and I’m no longer the mascara snob I once was.  I will just as often reach for a drugstore mascara as often as a department store one. In fact, I don’t think I even own a full-size department store mascara right now.

Wand CoverGirl, a mascara favourite of mine after trying their Lash Blast Clump Crusher, released a new addition to their Lash Blast line late last year, Bombshell Volume, a double-ended mascara in a pink tube.  When I saw the colour of the tube, I was sold, and then I saw it was called Bombshell, and I was like done, I need this in my life.

The product claims to give you 10-times more noticeable lashes versus bare lashes, and the two-step process combines extreme volume with an intensifying top coat for big, sexy lashes.

Side one Side 2

Okay, so if you have seen this product in stores, you would have noticed how giant the tube is.  Seriously, pick up two of them and you won’t need to use the dumbbells at the gym.  Side one’s brush is very similar to the original Lash Blast wand, and side two is more of your typical mascara wand.

The first time I tried it I wasn’t blown away.  I had big expectations for this because of its two sides and CoverGirl’s history with mascaras.  Then, I reversed the steps and found that my lashes looked way better.  They looked more voluminous and long doing step two first, then step one.

Base lashes Step one first Step two after step one Step two first Step one after step 2

Alright, so as much as I liked this mascara, this stuff is the most difficult mascara to remove that I have ever come across.  Seriously.  I had to use my Shu Uemura cleansing oil at night and in the morning to remove the stuff, on top of my regular makeup remove.  It’s like cement on your lashes.  It’s also quite messy to apply as I often get mascara on my lids, which isn’t a huge deal because you can just wipe it off, but if you aren’t careful it can wreck your whole eyeshadow look if it dries.  It’s because of these factors that I find myself not reaching for it.  It’s not worth the effort to remove, especially since there are other mascaras out there that give me the same effect.  Maybe if it was mind-blowing holy-grail status would it be worth the removal process, but it’s not. There are other mascaras out there that perform the same way that don’t give me a pain in the side to take off.  With that being said, this stuff must be waterproof, as I did give it the tear test and it held up perfectly (although sometimes waterproof doesn’t also mean tear-proof – learned that one the hard way).  It didn’t even smudge a little bit.

Overall, I liked this mascara, especially when you reverse the steps, but I don’t find myself reaching for it often because it’s such a pain to remove. Unfortunately that seemed to be the general consensus on CoverGirl’s website as well.  I do like the other items from the Bombshell line, including the cream shadows, the liner, and the lipsticks, but this mascara, meh.  It could be a winner, but the removal process is something I just can’t get over.
