The miracle workers: new CoverGirl + Olay foundation and concealer

title If there is one product that CoverGirl always nails, it’s foundations.  I have yet to try a foundation from the drugstore brand that I haven’t liked.  Sure, some have been better than others, but for the most part, they are always bang on.

The beauty brand has recently introduced two new products to their face category that don’t disappoint.  As part of their CoverGirl + Olay line, their new foundation and concealer fights fine lines and under-eye dark circles.

foundation

Housed in a jar, the CoverGirl + Olay FaceLift Effect Firming Makeup combines the hydrating effects of a night cream with luxurious flawless coverage.  Think it’s too good to be true?  Not a chance.  The Olay FaceFirm technology provides all-day hydration and skin renewal that plumps and lifts to improve skin’s natural firmness in just two weeks of continued use.  As for coverage, skin brighteners offer a gorgeous glow for a semi-luminous finish that covers fine lines and wrinkles, moving with skin so it doesn’t look cakey (the worst!).

concealer To round off your foundation routine, the CoverGirl + Olay The De-Puffer Eye Concealer combines expert shading technology with Olay rejuvenating serum to reduce the look of fatigue around the eyes for a more youthful appearance.  The concealer shading is warmer and brighter to counteract dark circles, and the unique cooling metal-tip applicator (love this!) and Olay rejuvenating serum, infused with cucumber extract, soothes puffiness under the eyes.

So basically both these products pack the power of hydrating moisturizers with the coverage of a foundation.  A match made in heaven.  But, do they work?

I’ve always assumed that the CoverGirl + Olay line is targeted to an older generation, so I pretty much told my mom she could have these products once I tried them out. Since she’s into her 60’s I figured she would benefit more from what these products have to offer than I would.  But then I tried them.  Okay, granted I don’t need a facelift or anything, and I don’t have under-eye circles, but wow, these two leave you with a really nice finish.  And, best of all, this stuff lasts all day. My makeup looked as flawless as it did when I applied it in the morning all the way to when I took it off.  As much as I love CoverGirl foundations, there have been some in particular (ahem, TruBlend) that just have no staying power, which is a big no-no for me. Sure, I have nice skin, but I like my makeup to stay all day; I don’t carry around my foundation or a compact for touch ups throughout the day, so I like things to not budge.

As for the concealer, I really loved the metal-tip applicator because it’s nice and refreshing to apply, especially first thing in the morning.  I wouldn’t do heavy-duty concealing with this, but I think it’s a pretty innovative product and I do recommend it.

Once again, CoverGirl hit it out of the ballpark with these two.

Have you tried CoverGirl + Olay’s new face products?

Turn up the heat! Wal-Mart Canada Summer Beauty Essentials

Wal-Mart title When it comes to summer beauty, it’s all about withstanding the heat.  From the pool to the beach to the barbecue, your beauty routine has to hold up all day, even when the temperature is hot, hot, hot.

Being summer beauty ready doesn’t mean you have to break the bank.  Every Sunday, my brother and I do our weekly grocery haul and we always make a stop in at Wal-Mart Canada, as they often have a great selection and the best prices.  After I get all my food, I make sure to check out the cosmetics section to see what’s new from all my favourite drugstore beauty brands.  Everyone from L’Oreal to Revlon to CoverGirl has some great products out this season that will have you looking your best, while still having some cash left over for the waterpark and slurpee runs. Products My top choices for skincare is a great day moisturizer that will help skin cell renewal.  Because your skin is exposed to sun all day errr day, make sure you keep your face moisturized.  Try L’Oreal Age Perfect Cell Renewal ($29.95), a new skincare line formulated to help stimulate surface skin cell renewal.  It instantly makes your skin look smoother, more supple, and in one week looks refreshed and replumped.  Before you moisturize, use a gentle face scrub, like Olay Fresh Effect’s Acne Scrub ($7.97), which has exfoliating microbeads that deep clean to fight blemishes and blackheads, and help prevent new ones from forming.  Partner your moisturizer with Garnier’s new BB Eye Roller ($15.97), which corrects dark circles, minimizes puffiness, reduces the look of fine lines, evens and hydrates.  Lord knows summertime means lots of long nights (whether it be bonfires or a patio/lounge).

For the daytime, rock Olay Total Effects Pore Minimizing CC Cream ($23.47), which has seven benefits, including an even skin-tone appearance, minimizes the look of pores, enhances brightness, visibly smoothes fine lines and wrinkles, reduces the look of spots, hydrates for a firm look, and replenishes moisture.  For night, try CoverGirl’s new Ready, Set Gorgeous foundation ($7.97) and concealer ($7.97), which gives a medium coverage which will last all night. Lipgloss Since cosmetics tend to wear away due to heat, chemicals, you name it, you’ll need some heavy-duty products for the lips and nails. Try Sally Hansen’s new InstaGel polish (I’m wearing the colour Pink Tank), which, combined with the topcoat, will give you gel nails without the annoying curing process.  For the lips, try a stain, which will give you long-wearing colour, perfect for the beach or pool.  I’m wearing Revlon’s ColorStay Moisture Stain in Milan Moment in the above photo, which gives you a nice colour with Vitamin E and aloe.

As for accessories, have some oil-absorbing sheets on hand if you have greasy skin.  Also, don’t forget some makeup wipes, and for those of you who want to look bikini-ready, try a skin treatment oil, which lessens the appearance of stretch marks.  Wal-Mart’s own Equate brand has all these products offered at a great price.

And finally, no day in complete at the pool or the beach without a chic towel, hat, and a cute bag to hold all your beauty products, including sunscreen (or in my case, tanning oil with an SPF ;)).  Hit up Wal-Mart Canada for all the beauty products and accessories shown in this post.

Ring the alarm: Concert makeup

Title

When it comes to concerts, I’m more inclined to do up the hair and makeup rather than go all out with the outfit. Since I’m in Canada, sometimes the most concert-appropriate outfit may not be the best choice due to the weather.

Last Sunday was the Beyonce and Jay Z On The Run Tour here in Winnipeg and since it was Queen Bey, obviously more is more (although I have to admit that I enjoyed HOVA way better).  I had my outfit all planned out, which consisted of lace shorts and a cute top but since it was an outdoor event, I chose to go with tights since the show was at night.  Luckily that didn’t alter my plans for hair and makeup.

The look I went with is a sparkly blue smoky eye, using two of Make Up For Ever’s new Artist Shadows.  I don’t often do a smoky eye much anymore since I don’t hit up ‘da clubs that often, but a Beyonce concert was a great excuse to bust out the dark eye makeup and false lashes.

Final 1 steps 1. Lay down an eyeshadow primer (I used Benefit Stay Don’t Stray, then with a dark blue cream eyeshadow (Yves Rocher’s Summer Collection Eye Pencil in Mediterranean Blue), apply this over your lid area.

2. With a dark blue sparkly eyeshadow, pat this over the blue cream shadow.  I used Make Up For Ever Artist Shadow in M-110.

3. With a matte grey shadow and a fluffy crease brush, work this into your crease, smoking out the blue shadow.  I used Make Up For Ever Artist Shadow in D-222.

4. With a shimmery white eyeshadow, apply this to your brow bone as a highlight. I used a shade from a limited edition holiday Marc Jacobs palette, but any shimmery white will do.

5. Since this is a smoky look, I often opt to skip the liner and just go heavy on the lashes.  Curl your lashes, apply a couple coats of mascara and then pop on some falsies.  I used Ardell Glamour Whispies and Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara.

6. Apply your foundation and concealer (do this after you do your eye makeup due to fallout) and then line your lower lash line with that same dark blue cream shadow.  Over top, place the sparkly blue and then coat your lower lashes in mascara.

Final 2

For the face, I used NARS Sheer Glow foundation and IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Undereye in Light with the banana power from the Anastasia Contour Kit over top to set the concealer.  I also used the Anastasia Contour Kit to contour and highlight, and Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush in Darling from the Off The Cuff Palette.  For the lips I used CoverGirl LipPerfection Jumbo Gloss Balm in Ballet Twist.

For the hair, I did loose curls and then a centre part with a gypsy headpiece. The outfit was all black with accents of gold.

How would you do your makeup at a Beyonce concert?
