#GottaTurnItUp – The art of the five-minute face

Title

We’ve all been there.  Alarm goes off, we hit snooze.  Do that five more times and then realize in a panic that hey, I gotta get up and get to work.  No time to eat, no time for makeup, throw on the first thing you see, and you’re out the door.

Well, breakfast is an easy one cause you can just grab something and you’re on your way, but showing up at work with no makeup?  That’s a no-no (at least in my books; nothing screams “I look tired” more than no mascara).  Luckily, it only takes a few steps to go from “I stayed up way too late last night” to “I woke up looking like this”.

Although my regular makeup routine is at least a 12-step process (#beautybloggerproblems), obviously, you ain’t got time for that in five minutes.  No matter how much time I have, washing your face in the morning is a must.  I love Olay Fresh Effects {Out of this Swirled} Deep Pore Clean & Exfoliating Scrub (actually though, I’m already on my second bottle of the stuff), which will prep your face and wash away any remains of yesterday’s face.  After, make sure you apply an eye cream, which will keep your eyes looking young and fresh (I’m 26 and people often think I’m 23… one lady at the gym last week thought I was 18).  Olay Fresh Effects {Bright on Schedule} Eye Awakening Cream is great as the cooling applicator massages as it hydrates to reduce the look of puffiness and dark circles.   Finally, moisturize your skin to keep it soft and supple.  Use Olay Fresh Effects {Dew Over!} Hydrating Gel Moisturizer for an instant boost of cooling hydration with honeysuckle and anti-oxidant-rich white tea.

Onto makeup!  Pull a triple whammy with a BB cream!  Olay Fresh Effects {BB Cream!} Skin Perfecting Tinted Moisturizing Cream says bye bye to blotches and leaves your skin looking healthy and glowing, plus covers up minor imperfections.  Mascara is a must in my books, so curl your lashes and then apply a few coats of CoverGirl Clump Crusher Mascara, my favourite drugstore mascara due to the precisely designed bristles, which really coats and separates every lash for the perfect fringe. To finish up, toss CoverGirl Lipsticks Smoochies Lip Balm in #BeSweet in your bag for a nude lip that keeps them moisturized all day long.

For hair, obviously ain’t nobody got time for that, but make sure you wash your locks the night before (which will leave you considerable time in the morning).  For strong hair, try Herbal Essences Honey I’m Strong Shampoo and Condition’er.  To detangle and add shine, apply the Herbal Essences Honey I’m Strong Silkening Spray to your damp locks for glossy hair the next morning.  Toss a hairspray in your bag (like Herbal Essences Tousle Me Softly Tousling Hairspray, which is in a non-aerosol can – perfect for hot days.. aka no explosions), and do a low chignon or braid while you are working on emails at work.

before and after

Follow these steps and no one at your job will know you woke up 20 minutes ago ;).

The innovator: Skindinavia Makeup Primer Spray

Title

I feel like a lot of primers have landed across my desk in the past few months.  Although I have been using primers under my foundation for years now, it seems that most makeup brands have been adding this must-have to their line ups. From pore vanishing to cancelling out redness to blurring imperfections, there’s a primer for everything.  I have tubes of the stuff at home from a variety of brands, but nothing liquid-like.  Until now, that is.

Skindinavia, known for their innovative setting sprays, released the first-ever makeup primer spray last month.  Their first launch in over five years and something new to the makeup category, this spray is a lightweight silicone-free spray that is good for your pores now and into the future, since it’s breathable and paraben-free.  The product is also clinically proven to soothe redness, prevent breakouts, control the appearance of oil, even-out skin tones, and reduce large pores over time.

The product works just like a setting spray, where you spray it directly on your makeup-free face.  Apply your foundation, blush and bronzer without the fear of creasing. I have been using this for a couple weeks now and I have to say that I love it.  It’s super light and applies like a fine mist. I have used the Skindinavia x Urban Decay setting sprays in the past and loved them.

Right now I am using Victoria’s Secret, based solely on the price ($14 compare to $36), and find that the setting sprays apply a little thicker than the primer. I have used this with a variety of foundations, but have to say that I love the way that it makes the Kat Von D Lock-It Tattoo Foundation apply.  That foundation, since it’s a full coverage, goes on quite thick, which can be a pain to blend at times.  With this sprayed first, it adds a bit of liquid to the foundation, making it easy to glide across my face, resulting in better coverage.  It’s also much faster to use, just grab the bottle, spray it in an X or T motion, and you are all set to go.

swatched

The only downside I can think of is the fact that you have to order this online, as I don’t know of any retailers here in Canada that sell it.  If you are interested in the primer and order it today off Skindinavia’s site, you can get free shipping (U.S. and Canada only), plus receive a mini bottle of the product for free.  The 4 oz. retails for $35 and the 8 oz. for $49.

Are you excited to try Skindinavia’s new Makeup Primer Spray? Please note, this post contains product that were sent by PR. All opinions are my own.

Dad’s the word! Father’s Day gift guide

When it comes to Mother’s Day, I find picking out gifts for my mom quite easy.  I didn’t do a gift guide this year because I feel like with a beauty blog, any product review could really apply to moms.  With Father’s Day, it’s a little different.

There’s the stereotypical gifts like barbecue accessories, gift cards, golf equipment, but if you have a dad like mine, Father’s Day is tough because either my dad doesn’t know what he wants or he wants a gift that’s way too expensive.

Visa gift cards are always a great idea, but if you like giving tangible gifts, here are my top picks (all beauty related, of course!).

Sothy’s Homme Soothing After-Shave Balm and De-stressing Eye Roll On Discovery Kit

Sothys

This French brand is a spa exclusive making this perfect for the dad who’s into luxury skincare (a previous gift for my dad was a $100 shaving brush from Gillette – I guess I know where my expensive taste comes from :P).  The soothing after-shave balm soothes razor burn, skin redness and discomfort, leaving skin feels energized and renewed.

Who says eye creams are just for women?  Pair the aftershave balm with the de-stressing roll on, which is an eye cream formulated just for men.  This products works to reduce puffiness, diminish dark circles, smoothes wrinkles and hydrates the eye area.

Soothing After-Shave Balm ($59.50) and De-Stressing Roll On ($59.50) available at Spaboutique.ca.

Calvin Klein Euphoria Cologne

Euphoria

I feel like cologne is always a great gift for dads. I mean, who knows better about fragrances than ladies, right?  Although there is a heck of a lot of scents out there, I love Euphoria Men, a mature scent that has notes of chilled sudachi, ginger pepper cocktail, raindrop accord, cedar leaves, black basil, sage, Brazilian redwood, patchouli, suede note, and amber.

1.7 oz eau de toilette ($72) at Sephora.

BRIKA Father’s Day Gift Box

BRIKA_FathersDayGiftBox_2

For the dad who likes to keep things local, BRIKA, a Canadian start-up online experience that celebrates modern craft and storytelling by featuring the work of authentic makers, has curated some of their fave artisan goods into a gift box special for Father’s Day.

The hand-selected items that are included in every box include facial care products by Crux Supply Co., a leather card case by Moniker Goods, and a Sierra key chain no. 1 by Son of a Sailor.

Boxes are $49 (with a retail value of $68) and are available online until June 9 at BRIKA.com.

What are you getting your dad for Father’s Day?
