In bloom: Maybelline Rebel Bloom spring 2015 lip collection

Title

Can we just talk about these colours.

Maybelline released their Rebel Bloom lip collection for spring 2015 in January of this year and I just about died (#notreally).  The 10-colour collection (eight in Canada) features super-saturated pigments that give you the most intense pastel collection this season.  I just needed to see the colours and I was sold.  This collection features the most irresistible spring shades; if you thought that their Vivids collection from two years ago was a showstopper, you need to see this one.

Each colour has a white base, so what you see in the tube is what you get on the lips. You know how when you add a white base to your nail colour it amps up the shade?  Same theory, but in lipstick format.

Labels Shades

I received five of the colours from the collection: 705 Blushing Bud, 710 Petal Pink, 725 Lilac Flush, 735 Rose Rush, and 740 Coral Burst.  Unlike their other lipstick tubes, these come in a gorgeous lilac casing that just screams spring. The formula is infused with honey nectar, which adds moisture, a must for these last few months of winter. As with other Maybelline lipsticks, these aren’t the longest-wearing ones I’ve tried (the darker colours, like Rose Rush and Coral Burst last a little longer), but I mean really, look at these shades. I certainly don’t mind pulling out that gorgeous lilac tube every few hours to reapply.

Blushing Bud

Blushing Bud is a mauvey-pink.. This is definitely a pink that mostly anyone can wear as it’s not too in-your-face, leaning more towards a subtle rose. I would say this shade is probably the most wearable from any other them in the collection; it’s one of those pink nudes that you can rock everyday without getting tired of the colour.

Petal Pink

Petal Pink is a blue-toned baby pink.  At first glance, I thought it would be similar to Pink Pop from the Vivids collection, but this one is more bubblegum pink, whereas Pink Pop is more purple-toned pink. You can definitely tell that there is a white base with this one, as the colour is so fluorescent.

Lilac Flush

Lilac Flush is one of those shades where when you look at it you just want to bask in all its glory.  It’s almost too pretty not to use.  A white-based lilac shade, this one takes a bit of a heavy hand when applying it, but once it’s on, the colour is just so gorgeous. Definitely more of a statement look, this one will be so gorgeous on the lips once the weather warms up.

Rose Rush

Rose Rush is a red that leans towards more of an orange-tomato, if that makes sense. It’s not a deep vampy/traditional red, but rather a red with orange undertones, making it lighter for a nice spring look. I’m not typically into reds, but rock this one with a tan, and you’ll have a nice refreshing look for spring.

Coral Burst

Finally, Coral Burst is a pink-toned coral colour.  At first glance I thought it was going to be similar to Coral Crush from the Vivids collection, but Coral Crush is a lot more vivid in nature, compared to this one. With a pink undertone, Coral Burst leans more towards pink than orange, but again, this one will be great to rock this summer with a tan.

Maybelline slayed it with this collection (#yassssssbitch), and if you haven’t picked up any colour yet from the collection, make your way over to your nearest drugstore to check it out. I can’t even pick a favourite since they are all so perfect. If anything, I just want to get my lipstick hoarding hands on the rest of the collection (not that I need anymore lipsticks).

Pucker up: Rimmel London Provocalips lip colours

Title

So it seems like the biggest rage in lips these days is long-wearing lip colour in a cream format, with a matte shade and a glossy balm.  L’Oreal has one.  Make Up For Ever has one. And now Rimmel London has one.

I have all three and for the most part they all work the same way. They come in a dual-ended wand, with a high-intensity opaque colour on one side and then a matte gloss or balm on the other. The colour side is a liquid that dries matte on the lips, and they all claim to last anywhere from 16 to 24 hours.

I do plan on reviewing the L’Oreal one (right now we are having a love/hate relationship), but today, it’s all about the new Rimmel London Provocalips.  This dual-ended product claims to be kiss-proof, transfer-proof, and trouble-proof, delivering a high-impact endless colour.  There’s no tight feeling or dry lips and lips feel smooth and moisturized all day long.  Available in 10 shades from nudes to pinks to reds.

Wands Wand balm

I have the colours Kiss Me You Fool (a standard red) and Skinny Dipping (a brownish nude). For long-wearing lip creams, typically you apply the colour and keep lips apart for at least 60 seconds.  Then, when you feel like they are dry, apply the gloss.  The gloss on these have a jelly texture, so they aren’t the best, but they add enough moisture to the lips to keep them comfortable.  They also aren’t the shiniest of glosses, but they do just fine.

KISS ME YOU FOOL

Skinny Dipping

Although I didn’t wear these for the billed 16 hours, both held up pretty well.  I do find reds last a long time in general, so a 10-hour wear with Kiss Me You Fool was standard (note, I applied a lip liner underneath the colour).  With that being said, I did reapply the colour after lunch as it faded away at the centre of my lips. As for Skinny Dipping, I really didn’t believe that a nude would hold up that long, and although the colour didn’t, it wasn’t completely gone after eight hours.  I didn’t reapply the colour throughout the day as I wanted to see truly how well it stood up.

As for the balm, it wasn’t the best “gloss” I’ve tried.  Like I said, it had a thin jelly texture, which added moisture to the lips, more so than shine.  I did find myself reapplying the gloss part a few times throughout the wear because my lips did feel dry, so I wanted to add back some moisture.

Overall, these aren’t the best long-wearing lip colours I’ve tried, but they aren’t bad.  For the price point, I would give these a chance.  There is a gorgeous baby pink nude that I eyed in store, and although I don’t think it would last the 16 hours, it probably would last longer than a regular lipstick in that shade.

A fresh outlook: Aveeno Fresh Essentials Skincare

TITLE

With it being the middle of February, there are two things on my mind when it comes to skincare — nourish dry skin and prep it for the spring.

I try out a lot of skincare products, both drugstore and prestige, and there’s a few things I look for when trying something new.  Does it break me out?  Does it leave my skin looking clear and radiant?  Do I get dry patches?  I’m a busy girl that is always on the go. Whether it be at my nine-to-five or the gym or doing my makeup for this blog, my skin goes through a lot.  Plus, the fact that I live in a climate where -40C in the winter is the norm (counting the windchill, of course), I need something that holds up.

I got the chance to try out the new Aveeno Fresh Essentials line recently, and I’ve been using them non-stop morning and night for the past two weeks. The line is comprised of three products: daily moisturizer SPF 30, a night cream, and a daily exfoliating scrub. All three products contain Southernwood, which creates a natural barrier that helps to lock in what’s good for your skin and keep out what’s not.

night cream

The morning moisturizer is enriched with vitamins A, C and E, which nourishes and protects the skin. Best of all, it’s formulated with SPF 30, so it protects against sun damage. The night cream infuses fortifying antioxidants and vitamins into the skin while you sleep. Finally, to round out the skincare routine, the scrub is enriched with natural luffa and coconut pulp to gently remove dirt and make-up from the pores. It’s super lightweight, so it won’t scratch your face.  I use a Clarisonic every night, so I didn’t use this particular product that much since I didn’t think I needed it, but the few times I did try it I noticed how smooth my skin felt.

I’ve tried Aveeno products in the past and have found they were good on my skin.  Did I get compliments on how radiant I looked?  No.  But, I did enjoy the consistency and texture of these products in particular, and best of all, there was no breakouts and my face felt moisturized. Although I didn’t use the scrub that often, I would say it’s my favourite from the three since I feel like a lot of facial scrubs are quite rough on my skin, but this one has ultra-fine particles, so you do feel the product, but it’s not irritating.

Scrub

Do I recommend the other two? As a drugstore moisturizer they did their job, but they didn’t wow me.  Yes, I recommend them if you are looking for something relatively inexpensive and does the trick.  With that being said, I really did like the fact that the day moisturizer contained SPF, which is super important for your skin.  Sure it’s winter now, but your face is still exposed to the sun.

Have you tried Aveeno’s Fresh Essentials line?  What were your thoughts?
