Refresh your look: Spring inspiration from Walmart Canada

New title

If you know me well, you’ll know I’m a huge Walmart person.  I swear, every Sunday my brother and I go for lunch and then hit up the store for our weekly grocery shopping.  Usually once we’re done in the food department, I head to cosmetics and he goes to electronics before meeting at the front to check out.

With that being said, I’m sure you can imagine my excitement when Walmart Canada got in touch to talk about their spring lookbook and how to incorporate the trends into inspiration for spring.  Since the fashion department is right beside the food department I occasionally peek in to see what they have, but when I received a $100 gift card to refresh my look, I fully realized how on-trend and affordable their items are.  Seriously, I picked up so many cute things for just under $100.

I recommend you take a peek at the lookbook for some inspiration of your own; I was totally digging so many themes, which is what I kept in my mind when I went shopping.

How to get in the groove… Spring means festivals.  Rock some flowy tops, cutoffs, and go nuts with metallic tattoos ($3 people!!).

Can we just talk about the people larping in the background real quick?

How to make an impact… Island-inspired brights are super on-trend this season, so I paired this neon mint green racerback crop top with a high-waisted long black skirt, this fringe floral kimono, and black flats to play into the trend but jazz it up a bit.  I like this outfit because I you can dress it up or down.  Swap out the kimono for the cardigan from the other outfit and you have a whole different look.

G21 Green racerback crop top – $5
G21 Black knit skirt – $7
G21 Fringe Kimono – $15

G21 Gabby flats – $9 (reg. $15)
G21 Reflective Aviator sunglasses – $9

Blues close up

How to chase the blues… Blue is totally on trend this season, so I rocked this cool hue along my lower lash line and on my nails to jazz things up.

New York Color City Proof 24Hr Waterproof Eyeshadow in River Romance – $3.47
Hard Candy Top Ten Eyeshadow in Feelin Blue – $5.98
Essie nail polish in Garden Variety – $7.96
Hard Candy Ginormous mascara in Electric Blue – $5.98

Make sure you stop by your local Walmart Canada store for directional “how to ” signage to help guide you in freshening up your spring wardrobe.  Also, don’t forget to flip through the spring lookbook, in store or online.

What trends will you be rocking this spring?

Garden variety: Essie Flowerista spring 2015 collection

Essie title

Essie nailed “spring collection” on the head when it released a collection called Flowerista.

To me, a spring collection is all about pastels and floral colours, so naturally I was super excited to see the brand introduce six flower-themed shades. This collection consists of six creme shades and is actually the first collaboration with designer Rebecca Minkoff ever since she became the global colour designer for the brand.

The collection consists of a fuchsia purple, a teal blue, a mint, a grey, and two nudes.  When I first received it I actually thought they sent two of the same colours, since the nudes are very similar in shade. It wasn’t until I looked at the labels did I notice that they are in fact two separate shades.

Garden Variety

Garden Variety

Garden Variety is described as a teal blue orchid and is one of those gorgeous blues that although has been done many times before, is just so noticeable on the nails.  I have a few shades that are similar, but this particular blue is always my favourite shade.  Definitely one of the standouts from the collection, although I have to say it did stain a touch when I took it off.

Flowerista

Flowerista

The namesake from the collection, this is described as a rich vibrant plum with red undertones.  Plum is definitely the best word for this guy, on the lighter side might I add, and it’s truly stunning once applied. Since the colour is on the darker side, you can definitely get away with one coat.  I did two just to be sure, but a second wasn’t really needed.

Blossom Dandy

Blossom Dandy

Blossom Dandy is an eye-catching blue-green with mint undertones. When I first spotted it I thought it was incredibly similar to Mint Candy Apple.  When I compared them though, Blossom Dandy leans more on the blue side of things, whereas Mint Candy Apple is a true mint (also lighter in shade).  If you are a fan of Mint Candy Apply (really, who isn’t?), pick this one up.

Petal Pushers

Petal Pushers

Petal Pushers is a refreshing cool slate with subtle red and blue undertones.  When I first saw it I thought it was a weird choice to include a grey in a spring collection.  Now that I’ve worn it though, this grey is definitely a beautiful spring grey.  I would even love to rock this in a chevron pattern with Blossom Dandy, as it leans more towards the lighter side of things, making it season appropriate.

picked perfect

Picked Perfect

Picked Perfect is a caramel brown mixed with a touch of red-velvet.  The darker of the two nudes, this guy is a good base or neutral if you want that “I’m wearing nail polish, but not” kinda look. It does have a thicker consistency, so you can get away with one coat.

Perennial Chic

Perennial Chic

Perennial Chic is the lighter of the two nudes. The colour is described as a neutral peach-brown accented by creme rose highlights.  This shade is the perfect skin-coloured shade if you are fair skinned.  It’s nice for days when you want to/have to keep it neutral.  It’s also a great base shade for nail art. I did find this particular shade to be the thinnest one in the collection; I did two coats but easily could have done a third for the most opaque coverage.

Overall, hands down my favourites from the collection are Garden Variety and Flowerista.  I feel like all the nail polish brands are just hitting it on the head this spring with their collections (OPI Hawaii, anyone?). As for wearability, these guys actually held up a bit longer than usual with Essie. I do find the brand chips easily (can get about a day’s wear out of it), but for some reason this collection stayed a few more days than what is the norm for my nails. I did use OPI’s Infinite Shine Primer and Gloss as my topcoat and base, so that may have played into the factor as well.

Although I do feel that all the colours are highly dupeable (especially with other Essie shades), sometimes you just can’t resist a new spring collection when you see it.

Are you picking up any colours from Essie’s spring Flowerista collection?

Please note, I was sent these products for review purposes, however, all opinions are my honest own :).

Matte about you: Maybelline Fit Me! Matte + Poreless foundation

Title

The rules to taking a good selfie?  Lighting, angles, and great makeup.  Ever take a photo and then when you look back your makeup just looks too glowy (which usually can be a good thing, but we don’t want that shine in the playback).

Enter Maybelline’s new addition to the Fit Me! family, the Matte + Poreless foundation.  This guy, available in liquid and powder versions, delivers a natural complexion that makes visible pores and shine disappear.

Available in 16 shades for the liquid version and eight for the powder, this foundation is great for days when you want to look natural. If you’ve never tried Fit Me! before, this line is great because its available in a wide range of shades.  Also, if you can’t find your exact shade, then you can mix and match to create a custom colour that fits any skin tone.

I have both the liquid and the powder, which I layer together for lasting staying power.  Although you can definitely do one without the other because it leaves a good coverage, I’m always in the routine of setting my foundation (although technically you won’t need to set this since it’s matte).

Swatches

I’ve been using this foundation for a few days now and although I do like the coverage, but I can still see some pores popping through.  I’ve never really had any issues with pores, so to be honest it doesn’t bother me and I never would have noticed if it weren’t for this review.  It does provide a nice matte finish though.  If you want a dewy, glowy foundation, look elsewhere (luckily, Fit Me! has a variety of different formulas to choose from).

Overall, the coverage is good on this.  It’s a great daytime foundation, I wouldn’t necessarily wear this on a nightout, since I like something more glowy and full coverage, but it’s amazing for daytime wear.  Also, a little goes a long way with this guy, so apply it sparingly.

Welcome to the family Matte + Poreless, you’ll fit right in!

Have you tried Maybelline’s Fit Me! Matte + Poreless foundation?
