Feeling enamored: Marc Jacobs Enamored Hi-Shine Lip Lacquers

Title It seems like Marc Jacobs just can’t make up his mind.

After reinventing their line of lipsticks, he’s pulled a Madonna and reinvented his line of glosses too.

The 18-shade Enamoured Hi-Shine Lip Lacquers is a line of glosses that delivers maximum colour and brilliance with its Triple Shine Complex, a blend of high-performance ingredients that provide unstoppable wear and shine. The collection is half nudes and half bold shades, so there’s a colour for everyone.  The biggest selling point for me was the mint scent, which not only freshens your breath, but also gives you that tingly feeling that is commonly associated with plumping glosses (although these are marketed as being plumpers).

Colours Wands

I received two shades, French Tickler, an iridescent peach shimmer, and Whip It, a bold iridescent magenta. I love layering French Tickler over a nude lipstick to just jazz it up as it provides just the right amount of shine to my lips. On it’s own, it’s not the best gloss for colour payoff, but when layered over a lipstick (especially a matte) one, it creates just enough jazz to  add some dimension to the lips.  As for Whip It, I’m usually not gravitated towards bold glosses, as I usually save my dark colour option for lipsticks, but this gloss is beautiful.  It’s definitely a lot more louder on the lips than it looks just in the tube. It’s the perfect magenta pink that’s not too in your face, making it perfect for any season. Wear it on it’s own for a lighter wash of colour, or over similar shade of lipstick to really deepen it up.

Although the colours are great, best of all, these aren’t that sticky, but rather quite comfortable, which if you know my annoyance for sticky glosses, is a big plus for me.

French Tickler Whip It

I’ve tried Marc Jacobs original glosses when he first launched the line and were impressed with those as well.  The packaging has changed since then, with the Enamored line being more square and the original gloss line, Lust for Lacquer Lip Vinyl, housed in a flat-ish tube. Regardless, both are super chic, and look expensive.  I also found the original line to be way shinier, although these guys definitely pack a punch in the shininess department themselves. I don’t really see a huge difference between the two lines.  This one may be a tad less sticky and major points for the mint scent as well.

Overall, I was really impressed with these guys and considering that I’m not a gloss girl, I can definitely see myself reaching for these when I want to amp up my lipsticks. Kudos Marc Jacobs, you nailed it!

Have you tried the new Marc Jacobs Enamored lip glosses?

All a-flutter: Big & bold lashes with New York Color

NYC title

If I had to choose just three makeup items to bring with me everywhere, it’s foundation, lip balm, and mascara.

I’m a huge mascara girl and love long lashes.  I used to have lash extensions, but then decided that I needed to start saving money, so instead I’ve become a huge mascara girl. I’ve tried everything from high-end to low-end, and I definitely have a few favourites (all of which range in price).

The trick to getting those big, bold lashes is to layer mascaras.  For this month’s New York Color #NYCBeautyPRO challenge we were tasked to create some major lashes. We were sent three mascaras, Big Bold Angel Lash Mascara ($4.99), Big Bold Volume by the Lash Mascara ($4.99), and Big Bold Curl Mascara ($4.99).

wands

Since I don’t like having too much product on my lashes, I chose to work with two of the mascaras, Big Bold Angel Lash and Big Bold Volume by the Lash.  First I curled my lashes and then applied Big Bold Angel Lash (the purple tube) for full-bodied, fresh and fluttery lashes.  After, I went over them with Big Bold Volume by the Lash for total fringe impact that volumes each lash up to 12x more volume.

Lashes

If you want your lashes to look really long, go light with the lid shadow and instead of liner, just opt for a darker shadow in the crease.  The base of your lashes will look dark enough with the mascara, hence no liner needed.

For $4.99 each, these mascaras are great for layering.  I highly recommend choosing two of your favourite mascaras that are targeted for certain needs (example: length, volume, separation, etc.) and then cocktail them to get that full fringe look.

What are your tips for longer lashes?

Festival faves: Five things I brought to the Winnipeg Folk Festival

FF title

With summer comes beaches, pools, patios, and festivals.

I’ve already been to a couple festivals this summer, but it was my first time embarking on the Winnipeg Folk Festival, a four-day weekend festival held in July every year in Bird’s Hill Provincial Park, a stone’s throw from my hometown, Winnipeg. Folk Fest, as us Winnipeggers call it, is a celebration of folk music and the evolution of the genre.

Although I do have an appreciation for folk and indie music, this particular festival has never really been my thing (when I told my friends I was going, it was met with confused looks).  Yes, it’s no EDC, but it’s local and something different (read: a lot more chill). Regardless, festivals are just great ways to get away and do something different.

Anyways, the best part for me of any festival is the outfit and what I’m bringing.  Since Folk Fest is much different from the electronic dance scene that I’m used to, here are some must haves I brought that are universal for any festival, regardless of the genre.

Backpack FF3

Camera- This one is a no-brainer. Obviously you need to capture the memories to share with all your friends. Whether it’s your iPhone (grab those selfie sticks!) to post on Instagram, a DSLR camera (as my case for the photos for this post), or my favourite – and totally appropriate for festivals, especially Folk Fest – an instant camera, like the Fujifilm Instax Mini ($99 at London Drugs). Trust me, if you are paying that much for the ticket, you’re gonna want to have something to get snap-happy with.

Sunscreen – It was 30 degrees outside on Saturday with plenty of sun, so I made sure to lather up with sunscreen prior to going, as well as packing it in my bag for later.  My favourites are the Ombrelle Face Cream with SPF 60 ($17.99 at London Drugs) and Hawaiian Tropic Sheer Touch Sunscreen SPF 30.

Lip balm – Nothing is worse than having dry, parched lips (I can’t tell you how many times I had to ask my friend for lip balm at EDC because they were so dry), so make sure you pack some lip balm so you’re covered.  I like Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm since its a two-in-one for moisture and colour, so this way you only have to pack the one product as opposed to a separate lipstick or gloss.

Water bottle – Probably one of the most important items you can bring to a festival.  You’re going to be walking around, dancing, standing, sweating, drinking (as in the alcoholic variety), all in the heat (and if it’s during the day, like Folk Fest was, in the sun) so make sure you keep hydrated (and not just with alcohol).  You can of course choose to purchase a bottle of water on-site, but they are usually marked up to ridiculous prices, so plan ahead and purchase one that you can refill when you are there. I love the Bubi Bottle ($29.99 in London Drugs stores), since its silicone and you can roll it up, meaning more room in your bag for other stuff.

Battery charger – The worst feeling is when your battery dies on your phone. How else are your friends going to know how much fun you’re having? What if you get lost?  What if you need to call someone or send out an all-important Tweet? Make sure you keep in handy a mobile battery charger or a Mophie case for when your battery is getting dangerously low.

Other items that were on my must-have list was a blanket for sitting, a festival friendly perfume (in this case it was Vera Wang Hippie Princess (30 ml/$49) – #beautybloggerproblems, bright nails (Sally Hansen Miracle Gel in Tipsy Gypsy), Batiste Dry Shampoo (love the tropical one), and a heavy-duty mascara (CoverGirl The SuperSizer by Lash Blast mascara).

What are your festival must-have items?

Huge thanks to London Drugs who provided me with tickets to the Winnipeg Folk Festival.
