#SeeItAll: Folklorama Punjab pavilion + a colourful look

Punjab title

Well folks, tomorrow marks the last day of Folklorama. I’ve had a blast travelling around Winnipeg and taking in so many different cultures.

For my last look, the Punjab pavilion was a no brainer. Inspired by the colourful punjab dresses, I had so much fun creating this bright makeup look. The pavilion was held at the Punjab Cultural Centre (1770 King Edward Street), which also housed a favourite pavilion of mine, the UK one, the week before.  We dined on Indian food, such as butter chicken, rice, naan bread, and sipped on this delicious mango smoothie, which I pretty much gulped down in one sip.

The makeup was pretty minimal on the dancers, however, I went with a more punjab bridal look, which goes heavy on the black liner, and lots of colour. Pinks, greens, and blues are perfect for this bright recreation, but I chose to stick with pinks and purples since those shades typically make my eyes pop. If you have brown eyes, try going with blues and greens.

Punjab steps

1. Fill in your brows (I went a little thicker than I usually go), and then with a pink cream eyeshadow, apply this as your base. I used CoverGirl Flamed Out Shadow Pencil in Sapphire Flame.

2. With Morocco from the Anastasia Beverly Hills World Traveller palette and a fluffy crease brush, lightly work this into the crease, acting as a transition colour.

3. With Pink Champagne from the same palette, apply this to your lids.

4. With a matte purple (I used a shade from the Kat Von D Star Studded palette, which unfortunately was limited edition for the holiday 2014 season, but any similar shade will do), apply this along your crease using a pencil brush. After, blend it out.

5. With a vibrant rose pink, like this pressed pigment from Lancome, apply this to the centre of the lid area to really bring out the pink.

6. Line your upper lash line, really winging it out and then apply a couple coats of mascara. I used a liquid liner (Make Up For Ever Ink Liner) to make it bold.  After, with a black shadow, lightly apply this in the crease, to darken it up a bit.

7. Line your lower lash line with that same pink pigment or shadow and then apply a couple coats of mascara to your bottom lashes.

Final 2

For the lips, I applied YSL Rouge Volupte in #8 to give me that perfect pink to complement the eyes.

I have to say that I had so much fun going to all the shows these past two weeks and learning and taking in so many cultures.  I have a lot of respect for all those performers, who, even though we see for one show, they perform three times a night for seven days. It’s actually super impressive to think about, considering that I haven’t seen one performer who looked tired.

#SeeItAll: Folklorama Italian pavilion + an Italian-inspired look

title

Ciao bella!

Having toured around Italy (a.k.a. Florence and Rome) last year, it was a no brainer that the Italian pavilion was first on my hit list of shows to hit up for week two of Folklorama.

I’ve been to this show in the past and this year’s was much different than what I experienced a couple years ago. Held at the Centro Caboto Centre (1055 Wilkes Avenue), the Italian pavilion had a medieval theme with dancing and lots of singing. We munched on bruschetta and a blood orange beverage while taking in the major talent from the performers (especially the little girl who had a major singing voice).

italy 1 italy 2

Obviously Italy is known as one of the fashion capitals of the world, with many high-end designers hailing from the European country (flashback to that time in Florence when I visited the Prada outlet…).  For this look I channeled my inner Sophia Loren, an famous Italian film actress, and did some light curls to my hair to make it wavy, pinned the top part back to add some volume, and went light on the eyes (with a cat eye of course), and pink on the lips.

Final
Steps 1. Fill in your brows then lay down a champagne pink cream eyeshadow as a base. I used CoverGirl Flamed Out Shadow Pencil in Violet Flame.

2. To act as a transition colour, grab Soft Peach from the Anastasia Beverly Hills World Traveller palette (I thought this would be a very fitting palette for these posts!) with a fluffy crease brush and work this lightly into the crease.  Remember to keep it subtle.

3. With Morocco and the same brush, add this into your crease to darken it up. Remember to blend!

4. Grabbing Spoiled, a shimmery pink, apply this on the lid area.

5. Line your upper lash line using a liquid liner and wing it out.  You can go very dramatic with this depending on your eye shape.  I used Make Up For Ever Ink Liner.  After, apply a couple coats of mascara to add some volume to your lashes. I used Make Up For Ever Smoky Stretch mascara. For the lower lash line, leave it bare and just coat your bottom lashes in mascara.

6. To finish up the face, I used Maybelline Fit Me Poreless + Matte foundation, Maybelline SuperStay Better Skin Concealer in Ivory, bronzer from the Anastasia Contour Kit to carve out my cheekbones, and NARS blush in Madly to keep everything neutral. For the lips, I used YSL Rouge Volupte in #19.

For the outfit, I chose to keep it classic with a white button down, denim shorts, Prada flower flip flops (purchased in Florence), Kate Spade giant faux diamond studs, and my House of Harlow Chelsea shades for that Sophia Loren look.

Let me know if the Italian pavilion is on your list this week! It’s a must!

#SeeItAll: Colour + culture at the Cuban pavilion at Folklorama

Title

Hola!

Week one of Folklorama is officially over, but that means that we get to experience a whole new set of pavilions and culture.  To finish up the first week, the last pavilion I visited was the Cuban one, held at the RBC Convention Centre here in Winnipeg.

The Cuban pavilion was one of the new ones to hit the festival, and it didn’t disappoint.  With such a big venue I had high hopes for this show, and it certainly delivered.

Maybe it was the amazing Cuban food, or the incredibly talented dancers, who came from as far away as Edmonton and Calgary, but this show was awesome.  The quality of the dancing and performing made it one of the best shows I have been to during week one.

Cuba 1 cuba 2 Cuba 3

Inspired by the heat of Cuban’s climate, I went with a dewy-bronzy look, complete with an orange lip and purple liner. Cuba’s culture is full of colour, and although this look is very minimal, I wanted to add those pops of colour in to celebrate the bright ambiance of this beautiful country.

Here’s how to get the look…

Final 1

Steps

1. Lay down a gold eyeshadow primer to create a base for the eyes. I used New York Color City Proof 24-Hour Eye Color in Murray Hill Champagne.

2. With an orange eyeshadow, lightly dust this into the crease area.  You don’t have to go too heavy, as the orange is being used as a transition shade.  I used Make Up For Ever Artist Shadow in S-74.

3. As a base colour for the lid, I chose to go with a rose shade, using Make Up For Ever in Make Up For Ever Artist Shadow in L-802.

4. To add dimension, I added a champagne-gold (from the Lise Watier Rivages eyeshadow palette) over the rose, making sure to not take it into the outer corners.

5. For the crease, I lightly dusted a metallic bronze (also from the Lise Watier Rivages palette), making sure to keep it subtle.  For this look I really wanted the lips to be the focal point.

6. I skipped black liner and chose to add a pop of purple instead.  I used Sephora Collection Colorful Shadow and Liner in Violet.

7. Curl your lashes and apply a couple coats of mascara to finish up the top part of the eyes.. I used Make Up For Ever Smoky Stretch with CoverGirl SuperSizer Mascara over top.

8. To finish up the eyes, I dusted that bronze along the lower lash line and then added some coats of mascara to my bottom lashes.

final 2

To finish up the entire look, I used Make Up For Ever Ultra HD foundation in Y225, Maybelline  Better Skin Concealer + Corrector in Ivory, New York Color bronzer in Sunny to contour and add some sun to my face, Revlon Cream Blush in Coral Reef, and Benefit High Beam with a Make Up For Ever highlight over top (to really give a dewy look).  For the lips, I used Maybelline ColorBlur in Orange Ya Glad.

Unfortunately the Cuban pavilion is finished this year, but there’s tons of other great pavilions you can check out during week two.  Take a look at Folklorama‘s website for listings.

Which pavilion did you check out during week one?
