That ombre effect.. Maybelline ColorBlur Cream Matte Pencil & Smudger

Title

So it seems like you can ombre basically anything nowadays.  Hair, nails, and now, thanks to Maybelline, your lips.

New for 2015, Maybelline’s ColorBlur lip pencils are matte lip colours with a smudger on the other end to create a blurred effect. Available in 10 shades, you can rock these either bold opaque or smudged out. To create that smudged out blurred effect, first apply the colour and then using the smudger on the other end, gently blur the colour towards the edges of your lips.

Colour Blurs Smudger

I received five colours from the line to test out and although I love the shade range, I don’t particularly think I would ever wear this blurred.  Apparently it’s a popular beauty trend in Asia, and you know us Westerners, we love bringing those trends over here stateside (cough BB cream).  To me, it kinda gives you that “I just sucked on a popsicle” or “I had full lipstick on and then I ate and drank and most of it wore off” kinda look.  It’s a cool concept, and you certainly don’t need to use the other end to smudge it out, but it’s cool that the option is there if that’s your jam.

Berry Misbehaved Fast and Fuchsia I'm Blushing Orange Ya Glad Plum Please

I tried the whole blur thing with Plum Please, but I just can’t grasp the concept. But hey, that’s the magic of makeup, you can do whatever you want and if you don’t like it then you can wash it off and start over.

Blurring effect aside, these are actually great lipsticks.  They go on matte and are extremely pigmented. Matte lip colour seems to be all the rage lately, so this line is a double whammy, it’s right on trend with the blurred thing and with matte colour. They are also easy to apply as they just glide on the lips and are incredibly long lasting.  The only thing I didn’t like was that you have to twist them up from the bottom, and when you take the top off the lipstick side it looks like you would twist it there.  Not a huge deal, but it frustrates me every time I go to use one of these.

These retail for a SRP of $11.99 although I’m sure you can find them for much cheaper. Regardless, it’s a great product and I would definitely pick up a colour or two.

Down to the last drop: Paula’s Choice product update

Please note, the following post is a sponsored post on behalf of Pretty in my Pocket. All opinions are my own.

PC title So I’m fortunate that I get the opportunity to try out a lot of skincare.  Although I do have certain faves when it comes to cleansers, toners, and moisturizers, I love trying my hand (er, face) at different products.

Back in June I got the opportunity to try out a bunch of skincare products from online brand Paula’s Choice. Included in my regimen was the Resist Perfectly Balanced Cleanser ($18 USD), the Exfoliating 8% AHA Gel ($26 USD), the Resist Super Antioxidant Concentrate Serum ($34 USD), and the SUN 365 Self-Tanning Concentrate ($18 USD). I’m not quite done all the products, but done to the last drops on a few of them.

cleanser

My faves are definitely that cleanser, serum, and self-tanning concentrate.  If I had to choose one product though, hands down it’s the Resist Perfectly Balanced Cleanser because of its foaming properties.  If you are like me and use a Clarisonic on the regular every night, this product is great because it foams up, thus making your skin feel like it gets a deep clean. The serum was great too, however, I didn’t really see any noticeable differences in my skin tone.

As for the moisturizer, I actually ended up giving this product to my mom as it broke me out on my chin area (it ended up breaking her out too).  With that being said, I always use cream moisturizers, whereas this one is a gel, so it may have been the consistency of the product on my face that made me break out.  Once I discontinued using it, my skin did clear up.  If you are used to gel moisturizers though, it would probably work great for you.

In a flash: White graphic liner + Cavalia Odysseo comes to Winnipeg

title

If there’s one way I love wearing coloured liner, it’s applied over top of black.

Last Thursday I was invited to the opening performance of Cavalia Odysseo here in Winnipeg. If you live in the city then you no doubt have seen the ads all over town promoting the show, which runs until October 18 due to popular demand. Or maybe you’ve seen the big white tent on the corner of Sterling Lyon and Kenaston, which is the size of a CFL football field and houses the show and 2,000 seats. If you haven’t heard of the touring production, it’s essentially Cirque du Soleil but with horses.  Of course there’s all the acrobatic stuff, but the 65 horses are also an integral part of the show.

But more on that later… since I’ll take any opportunity to do my makeup, I knew I wanted to do something different with this look.  I received this Lime Crime Eyeliner in Lunar Sea a while back and love how opaque it is.  I find that white liners are typically quite sheer; not this one though.  This goes on as white as it looks in the tube, and best of all it doesn’t budge.

white liner

I doubled up the white with Kat Von D’s Tattoo Liner in Trooper (I received the five-year anniversary edition of the product, which donates $1 USD to the California Wildlife Center), packed on the mascara and some falsies for a flirty eye look before heading out to the show.

Final 1 Steps 1. With a cream eyeshadow, like Lise Watier 24 Hrs Glam in Sexy Glam, put this all over the lid area.  This is going to act as a base for the shadows we’ll be using.

2. Using the Anastasia Beverly Hills Shadow Couture palette, grab the colour Soft Peach on a fluffy crease brush and lightly work this into your crease, acting as a transition shade.

3. With the colour Morocco from the same palette and a Mac 217 (or any other crease brush), work this into the crease area to add some dimension and darkness.

4. With the colour Bellini, apply this on the lids, going lightly into that crease colour.

5. With a black liquid liner, I used Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper, liner your upper lash line, winging it out.

6. With a white liquid liner, like Lime Crime Eyeliner in Lunar Sea, apply this gently over the black. If you are like me and don’t have a steady hand, go over the bottom of the white with the black to make it more smooth.  After, apply mascara, and if you wish, some falsies.  I used Make Up For Ever Smoky Stretch with Kiss Ever EZ Lashes in 02, which are very subtle.  For the bottom lash line, lightly dust Morocco and then apply mascara.

Final 2

For the face, I used Marc Jacobs Re(Marc)able Full-Cover Foundation Concentrate in the shade 27 Bisque (I LOVE this foundation) with Make Up For Ever Ultra HD in 117 mixed in to lighten it up a bit (it was a touch too yellow for my skin).  For the lips I used Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Requiem (obsessed with this lip colour) with Maybelline Baby Lips Moisturizing Lip Gloss in Tickled Pink over top to add some moisture.

Tents box office outside stage Although I’ve never been a huge fan of Cirque du Soleil, I was excited to check out Cavalia Odysseo. Just to be clear, Cavalia is a separate entity from Cirque, I believe the only tie is that the artistic director Normand Latourelle, who was in attendance on Thursday night, was one of the founding pioneers of Cirque du Soleil from 1985 to 1990.

Anyways, similar to the well-known Quebec aerial production company, Cavalia (who also hails from la belle province), also has acrobatics, but the real draw is definitely the horses.  The show marries equestrian skills, acrobatics, and theatrical effects to present a two-hour show that will leave you mesmerized (the show started at 8 p.m. and ended around 10:30 p.m. with a half-hour intermission).  So why horses?  According to Cavalia, the horse has marked human history and progress more than any other animal. Horses have taken us to the ends of the earth, enabled us to build bridges between cultures and expand civilization.  All that is really prominent in the show, as the horses are at the same level and treated the same as the human performers. The interaction between human and horse is so flawless that you’ll have to keep reminding yourself that these are real-life horses. Altogether there are 65 horses and 45 artists in the world’s largest touring production; with 11 different breeds and the artists consisting of riders (the stuff they do is equally as awe-worthy as the acrobatics), acrobats, aerialists, dancers and musicians. Fun fact: all the horses are male, consisting of stallions and geldings (neutered horses, which the audience learned in the trivia prior to the show starting).

close

Unfortunately photography was prohibited due to the safety of the performers (both human and animal), but if you can still grab tickets to this show, I certainly recommend it (check out Cavalia’s official site to see photos and videos of the show).

Regardless of the animal factor, I just felt overall that Cavalia puts so much love and pride into the production, more so than Cirque du Soleil, which is all over the world (how many of them are there in Vegas again?).  The quality of the production was amazing and you certainly won’t be leaving disappointed.

Will you be checking out Cavalia Odysseo?
