Truly remarkable: Marc Jacobs Re(marc)able Full Cover Foundation Concentrate

Foundation title

So I get to try a lot of foundations and there have been a few that I can list off as being holy-grail status, totally-worth-the-money buys. And then there are some that I fell in love with, tried them a few more times, and then decided they weren’t all that great after all.

A few weeks ago I got sent a huge package from Sephora to try out their new fall goodies.  One of the products was Marc Jacobs’ new foundation.  I have a love-hate relationship with his line.  Some of the products are amazing and others are totally skipable. I’ve never tried his foundations before because of the staggering price tag (C$69 a pop) and the inconsistency in his line, so I was excited to dab into these guys and test them out.

Marc Jacobs Re(marc)able Full-Cover Foundation Concentrate is a lightweight foundation concentrate that promises to deliver 24 hours of full-coverage wear. The oil-free formula contains twice as much pigment as other leading full-coverage foundation and it’s infused with innovative ingredients that completely cover your complexion.

Dropper

Available in 22 different shades, I received the colours 34 (beige medium) and 27 (bisque neutral).  Since I have a slight tan on my skin still (thanks self tanner!), I can pull off 34, however, 27 is a bit too yellow for my complexion (I have to mix it with a peach-toned foundation to pull it off). I initially thought this guy was going to have a pump applicator, however, the black top pops off to reveal a silver wand that contains a dot applicator, which is used for custom coverage.  You are supposed shake, dot, and then blend on your skin for a matte coverage.

If you are looking for a light foundation, skip this one.  They weren’t lying when they said it was full coverage and long lasting.  I’ll be honest, I absolutely love this foundation.  This may even be better than my beloved Laura Mercier Silk Creme because it’s so light to apply (unlike other full-coverage foundations, like Kat Von D Lock-It Tattoo Foundation, which feels so heavy) and it lasts all day with amazing coverage. Usually my foundation will look a little patchy after a day’s wear, but not this guy. This stuff is amazing.  Hands-down my new fave.

I did look up reviews on Sephora and I was shocked to see that it got a pretty bad rating. I think the issue is that you really only need a little bit of the product, which when it comes to foundation in general, I’m sure we are used to using way more.

Overall, this foundation is incredibly pricey, but I do have to say that it’s one of the best I have ever used.  You also don’t need a lot, so I would put some serious thought into giving it a try.  Sephora also offers samples of foundations so you can give it a try at home before committing to that $69 price tag.  Just remember, a little goes a long way.

Feeling blue… How to wear blue lipstick

Blue title

Reds, nudes, pink, and purples.. but what about blues?

Okay, so blue may not be the most conventional lipstick colour, but it seems like “wacky” colours, a la blues, blacks, greens, and really anything that can be classified as “unicorn shades” are so totally in right now.

A few months ago, Lime Crime sent me a few of their products to test out.  I have been wanting to try their lipsticks for so long, but of course the only colour they sent was this bright blue shade, called Cry Baby, a collab they did with Atlantic Records artist Melanie Martinez.

Cry Baby is an ocean blue shade that is so gorgeous to look at, but totally not wearable for everyday.  Or really, for most occasions.  I love looking at it, but I feel like if I were to wear it out in public I would get so many stares (it’s not really a shade I can wear to work.. or on a date..).

Anyways, when I found out I was going to Frosh Festival this past Sunday at the University of Manitoba where a bunch of EDM DJs were playing, I thought this could be my chance to finally put this on.

But how to wear it?

Well, since this is such a bold lipstick, the rest of the makeup should be soft.  You can sport just a black cat eye and lashes and be done with it, or you can sport soft pink and nudes, like I did in this post.

final1 Steps 1. Fill in your brows (I used Gerard Cosmetics Brow Bar To Go), and then lay down a shimmery cream-coloured cream eyeshadow. I used MAC Paint Pot in Bare Study.  Then, with an orange shadow, like Make Up For Ever Artist Shadow in L-802, lightly dust this in your crease to act as a transition shadow.

2. With the Anastasia Beverly Hills Shadow Couture palette, I grabbed the colour Morocco on a crease brush and worked this into the crease.

3. With a cream eyeshadow, like NYX Prismatic Shadow in Girl Talk, place this on the lid area.

4. Before we move onto liner, apply your foundation.  I used Marc Jacobs Re(Marc)able Foundation in 34.

5. Next, with a black liquid liner, line your upper eyelid, winging it out.  After, apply some mascara.

6. If you wish, you can apply some false lashes.  I used the Kiss Ever EZ starter kit, which includes the most perfect wispy lashes, glue, and tweezers to apply the lashes.  I don’t usually use the glue included in these kits, but this one worked great.  I highly recommend this set.

For under the eyes, I dusted on Morocco, then put a nude liner in my waterline. After, I put a coat of mascara on my lower lashes.

7. Next, apply your concealer. I used Emani HD Corrective Concealer.  Then, apply a bronzer to contour; I used Vita Liberata Trystal Minerals. To finish up the face, apply a peach-coloured blush, like NARS Madly, and a highlight to the tops of your cheekbones for some shine.  I used the highlight from the Make Up For Ever Pro Sculpting Duo.

8. For the lips, I used Lime Crime lipstick in Cry Baby.

Final 2

I am so obsessed with this look, that I’m sad I don’t go to more events where I can wear it. I will say though that at the concert I had so many people come up to me and say they love my lipstick.

I might just have to fill up my planner with more occasions where I can rock this blue, cause I’m certainly not crying over this look.

How do you rock blue?

Start spreading the news… Reese’s Spreads

Reese's spreads title Is your Instagram feed also cluttered with delectable sugary sweets?

I feel like there’s two huge trends going on right now on social media that totally contradict themselves.  Fitness is super hot right now, but then so are macarons, donuts, cupcakes, aka all those yummy sweet snacks that kinda throw all your fitness goals out the window.

In case you haven’t been to a supermarket lately (or don’t live in Toronto – when I was there for Labour Day Long Weekend I say billboards and ads EVERYWHERE), Reese’s came out with a spread that is ah-mazing. It’s like a peanut butter cup in a spread. Yes, that’s right, a spread which can put on anything.

Reese's Spreads Open Snackster boxs Snacksters

Reese’s Spreads is the perfect combination of chocolate and peanut butter (be still my beating heart), and they are based on those iconic one-is-never-enough peanut butter cups. And if that isn’t enough, they also have handy travel-sized throw-in-your-bag Snacksters, which has the spread and little sticks to dip it in (I just can’t).

Since I can easily go through the 650g jar of this in one sitting, I tried to be resistant and instead see how I could bake something up using this sweet goodie. After spending hours on Pinterest and Google I finally came across this Chocolate Hazelnut Layer Cake from Cookies and Cups, a two-layer chocolate cake with cream cheese chocolate hazelnut spread sandwiched between the two layers (and another layer of just the chocolate hazelnut spread), with that icing on top as well.  It looked like the perfect dessert to make for Rosh Hashanah dinner last Sunday.

Cake

Obviously I had to tailor the recipe and swap out that other chocolate/nut spread for the Reese’s one, but it came out fantastic.  For the frosting, I totally forgot to add in the icing sugar and vanilla, but it turned out great anyways with the cream cheese (light obviously – have to save those calories somehow!), whip cream, and Reese’s spread.  I topped it off with caramel tiramisu balls from Dean & Deluca (which OPI graciously sent over recently in a press send).  I tried to do the drizzle of the spread, but unfortunately Reese’s spread doesn’t turn liquidy when microwaved.  That’s okay though, because it was chocolatey enough.

You can find the recipe on Cookies and Cups’ blog.

If you are looking for more bite-sized smaller recipes, Hershey’s Kitchens’ website has tons of great options.  You can dip it on fruit, you can drizzle it on pretzels, put it on bacon, or just dip that spoon directly into the jar and eat it al fresco.

Okay, now I’m hungry…

How do you spoon?
