All day wear: Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor

Revlon title So it’s no shocker that when it comes to all the rage right now in lip wear, it’s matte lip colour.

These aren’t new to the game, but it seems like more and more brands are coming out with their own formulas.  First it was prestige lines like Kat Von D and Anastasia Beverly Hills, now drugstore brands are coming out with their own versions.  One of the newest to the game? Revlon.

Revlon’s Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor is a line of eight different shades, ranging from pinks to reds to nudes.  These are 100 per cent wax-free and are a gel formula.  They apply lightweight, leaving you with high-def velvety matte colour.

products Gloss wands

I received two shades of these guys courtesy of London Drugs, the colours HD Obsession (a bright fuchsia) and HD Passion (a fiery red).  Like the MAC Retro Matte lip colours, it’s all in the brush when it comes to the application.  These feature a flat long brush which makes it easy to line your lips before fully applying the colour.  For both my swatches I didn’t even need to use a lipliner beforehand, the applicator does the job perfectly.

The colour goes on glossy but then dries to a matte finish, which literally lasts all day.  Think something similar to the MAC Retro Matte formula, but without that annoying canines that tends to ball up by hour eight.  Even after eating and drinking, the red one was still pretty opaque on my lips, even in the centre where it would tend to fade.

Also, these have the comfort factor of the Maybelline Vivid Mattes, which leaves you with creamy colour (not that annoying tight feeling that is common with matte lip colours), but much longer lasting than their drugstore counterparts.  Because of that, these should be seriously considered when it comes to finding the perfect matte liquid lip colour.

Between the formulation, comfort factor and longevity, these rank quite highly on my list of matte lip colours, regardless of price.  The only thing is I wish that they had a larger colour selection.  Let’s see some bold colours – purples, blues, blacks (okay, these aren’t that wearable, but that’s what I love about the Kat Von D Everlasting Lip Colours, since they have such a huge shade range).

I also want to note that these do have a fragrance, it’s a mango/vanilla scent, which I absolutely love, but if you have fragrance issues, I thought I would warn you.

Overall, if you are looking for a good matte lip, you need to check these out.  A coworker recently sent me an email saying that she couldn’t find the Maybelline Vivid Mattes yet at her local Shoppers, so I told her to look into these as well.  Honestly though, the more I have used these, the more I’ve just been loving them.  If you like the Maybelline ones (or even if you don’t), look into the Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolors because I have to say these are better (sorry Maybelline, I still love the product though!).

Have you tried the Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolours yet? What were your thoughts?

Sweet scents: Three perfumes for Valentine’s Day

Perfume title When it comes to Valentine’s Day there’s a few things to keep in mind. What your hair and makeup is going to look like, the perfect outfit choice, and the sexiest perfume to top it all off with.

I have many of scents in my collection but each one has its own story.  I have my date night scents, my everyday perfumes, my winter fragrances, etc.  When it comes to Valentine’s Day, obviously your partner’s favourite scent on you should win out, but if you need helping choosing the perfect perfume then keep reading.

Viva La Juicy

Viva La Juicy –  Juicy Couture

This one is actually my boyfriend’s favourite scent on me, and also one of my favourites (it’s the first perfume I have ever finished).  With notes of will berries, mandarins, honeysuckle, gardenia, jasmine, amber, caramel, vanilla, sandalwood, and praline, this will make you want to bathe in all its glory.

This is definitely a girly scent and whenever I smell it it reminds me of summer, and especially of Las Vegas. This one is the total package; from the sweet scent to the gorgeous glass bottle (complete with pink bow!), you need to give this a whiff.

Valentina Pink

Valentino Valentina Pink

This one is limited edition, but you can still find it at Hudson’s Bay. From the gorgeous ceramic hot pink bottle (complete with an oversized flower!) to the sweet smells, if you can still get your hands on this one, grab it.

Valentina Pink first hits you with peony, punctuated by strawberry and the musky tonality of blackberry. From there, the trio of May rose, a centifolia rose and a rosebud entices the senses. Round out the experience with Cashmeran wood and praline.

I usually reserve this one for day dates since it’s very feminine, but not quite as sexy and seductive as other fragrances out there.

Chloe

Chloe Eau de Parfum

Another oldie but a goodie, Chloe Eau de Parfum is a smooth floral fragrance with top notes of pink peony, freesia, and lychee.  At the heart is mid notes of magnolia flower, lily of the valley, and rose.  End it all off with cedarwood, amber and honey.

This feminine perfume is encased in a glass bottle with a plated silver top and hand-tied ribbon.

Apparently I have things for floral fragrances, since all three have floral notes.  But then again, a Valentine’s Day staple is a bouquet of roses, so all of these fragrances are most fitting.

What’s your favourite Valentine’s Day scent?

New to the game: Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Oil

title A couple months back I started to notice that my eye makeup would start to run and smudge throughout the day. I didn’t know if it was my foundation or my mascara running, but it was really annoying that I always had black smudging down that I would have to wipe away.

Anyways, I later made the connection that it was my facial oil that I would apply morning and night under my foundation that made my makeup run.  It was too oily for my face to handle during the day.  After I made the change to just applying the oil at night I no longer noticed that unwanted darkness under my eyes.

Anyways, it was because of this that I was surprised that Smashbox came out with a primer that’s in the form of an oil. Umm hello, I felt like it would be the opposite of what it was trying to achieve.  Primers are supposed to make your makeup look vibrant and fresh, as well as make it last longer.  Applying facial oils in the morning did the complete opposite of this.

oil

Smashbox’s Photo Finish Primer Oil is 50 per cent primer, 50 per cent oil and it has 100 per cent skin-refining power for picture-perfect makeup every time. From the same company that came out with BB water (which is amazing BTW), this is the first-ever primer specially formulated in a lightweight, luxurious oil to create radiant skin that glows. It’s made with a blend of 15 essential lipid-rich plant oils that penetrate instantly to moisturize deep into skin.  This leaves you with a seamless canvas with a dewy, youthful finish. All you have to do is apply two drops to your face, wait for it to dry, then apply your makeup.

As I mentioned, I was sceptical about this product. Applying oil to my face before I applied my makeup basically ruined my look. So how well would this work for me?  Surprisingly quite well. My eye makeup has not run and it’s kept my foundation nicely in place for the day. The only thing you have to watch out for is not to apply too much of the product.

Dropper

So why go with an oil over a cream? Well, it’s all in the ingredients.  This guy contains, among other things, is a lightweight blend of jojoba, arabica, and argan oils, and it’s also infused with soothing chamomile and lavender oils to calm the senses.  Because of all the extras in here, it makes the product perfect for the harsh winter months and during the summer when you might get a bit too much sun on your face.

It’s also not just for your face.  You can apply it to split ends, cuticles, elbows, and even your chest for a dewy sheen. Since it’s an oil, you can also pat it over your makeup for a dewy, healthy look.

Before and after

At C$49 it’s priced comparably to other primers out there (primers are expensive!), so you’ll have to go on personal preference.  It’s definitely something different, but if you want to take the chance and try it out, I’m sure you won’t regret it.
