Pink eyes, pink lips: A drugstore makeup look

Title

The drugstore beauty brands have been killing it lately.

With spring just around the corner, it seems like every brand are releasing products that are rivalling their luxury counterparts. From matte liquid lipsticks to an assortment of brow products to full-coverage concealers and foundations, it seems like you can get anything and everything at your fave drugstore.

Since I get so many products to try out and play with, I wanted to come up with a look that was exclusively drugstore. From the primer to the setting spray, you really can create a beautiful makeup look that uses products that are affordable and easily accessible.  As a result, I came up with this pretty pink everyday look that uses some new stuff from Covergirl, Maybelline, some faves from Makeup Revolution, and more.

final 2 Steps
1. Starting with the brows, fill them in using a complementary brow shade. I used CoverGirl Brow Powder & Brow Fill, then set it with the Eyebrow Shaper to set and add some additional coverage. To highlight the brow bone, I used Maybelline Brow Precise Perfecting Highlighter (I love this thing).

2. Lay down an eyeshadow base (I used Maybelline Master Prime Long-Lasting Eyeshadow Base. Then, with the matte dusty pink colour from the CoverGirl TruNaked Eyeshadow Palette in Jewels, apply that in your crease as a transition shade.

3. Next, with a crease brush and the Makeup Revolution Redemption Eyeshadow Palette Iconic 3, grab the matte brown pink shade and then apply that in the crease.

4. With the same brush, grab the shimmery pink brown from the same palette and apply that in the crease over the other shade to darken it up.

5. Spray a flat shader brush with some setting spray then apply the shimmery pink champagne colour to the lids. By spraying the brush first, it makes the colour appear more frosty.

6. With a dense shader brush, apply the shimmery bone colour from the CoverGirl Jewels palette to your brow bone.

7. Apply your foundation and concealer. I used CoverGirl Outlast Stay Fabulous 3-in-1 foundation (my favourite from the brand) and their new Outlast All-Day Soft Touch Concealer with the Outlast All-Day Matte Finishing Powder. For the contour I used the contour kit from Makeup Revolution; for the cheeks I used the peach shade from the L’Oreal Infallible Blush palette. To highlight, I used the Maybelline Master Strobing Liquid with the Makeup Revolution Vivid Baked Highlighter on top.

8. For the eyes, apply a brown liquid liner for a softer look. I used CoverGirl Intensify Me! Liquid Eyeliner in Smoked Amber, then put some coats of CoverGirl So Lashy! mascara and some false lashes from Kiss and their Blooming collection.

9. To finish up, for the lips I used CoverGirl Outlast All-Day Intense Matte and Glossy in Nude Intensity.

final 1

This was my first time using a lot of these products. Although I have used and love the CoverGirl Stay Fabulous Foundation, I was pumped to try out their new Outlast face products. The concealer’s applicator was really cool because you just squeeze it and swipe it on; super handy (it reminds me of a lipgloss applicator). The Outlast powder was great too because it mattified my skin and added some extra coverage.

Other products that I loved were the Maybelline Brow Precise Perfecting Highlighter, which literally fits right on your brow bone and gives you a nice clean highlight, and the CoverGirl Outlast matte and gloss duo, which is available in a ton of colours.

It’s crazy how you can get pretty much any product at the drugstore now, and the quality of products available are amazing. Next time you’re at your favourite store, stop by the makeup section and let me know what you’re most excited to try!

What makeup product are you most excited to try this spring?

Partner in prime: Estee Lauder Smoother Universal Perfecting Primer

Title

Normally I wouldn’t do a whole review on a primer, but when I tried Estee Lauder’s newest one, I thought it justified an entire write up on it.

The massive beauty brand already had two primers in their lineup, the Mattifier and Radiant Perfect Primers, but they’ve just released a third one to the family, the Smoother Universal Perfecting Primer.  Now, with three different primers to chose from, it makes it perfect to find the one that will suit your skin type and texture. These primers are enriched with technologically advanced formulas and skin-perfecting ingredients. As a result, these guys create a perfect canvas for makeup application.

The Smoother Universal Perfecting Primer is great for all skin types and is infused with skin-softening apricot essence. The texture of it is like gelatine, and once applied, it leaves skin feeling smooth and helps to maintain the moisture balance in skin. Not only that, but once you have this primer on (and a little goes a long way), it will minimize the size of pores and imperfections.

I’m not really picky about primers. I’ll try and use any one that’s in my collection. Obviously, I have some for everyday wear and others (which typically tend to be the more expensive ones) I reserve for night outs. This guy retails for C$44, which is pretty average for a primer, which for some reason are often a pretty pricey makeup item in general.

I was very impressed with this primer, mostly because my makeup looked so amazing still even after 10 hours. Also, I want to add in those 10 hours, I was at work, I did a TV appearance, and taught a workout class.

before and after

I have been using this primer all week under my foundation. During the week I paired it with the L’Oreal Infallible Total Cover foundation.  For these photos I used NARS Sheer Glow. Regardless of the foundation used, my makeup still looked pretty good by the end of the day. Obviously there was some fading, but compared to other primers in my collection, this made my makeup hold up incredibly well.

I haven’t tried the other formulas of these primers so I can’t give my review on those, but I absolutely love the Smoother formula. Even if you don’t wear foundation, look into this product because it’s designed to blur out any imperfections. You can find it at Estee Lauder counters in department stores, as well as Sephora and Shopper’s Drug Mart.

What’s your favourite primer?

Trendy hair: L’Oreal Colorista Hair Colour

title One of the hottest trends for the past year in hair has definitely been pastel shades. From grey to cotton candy pink, lilac, seafoam green, you have probably seen so many bloggers and influencers rocking hair that would make Rainbow Bright jealous.

Now if you’re like me and have always admired these cool shades but are kinda scared to make the leap, L’Oreal has released the answer to this dilemma. Introducing Colorista, semi-permanent hair colour that washes out in four to 10 shampoos and includes only the coolest colours of the rainbow.

closeup

Backed by popular influensters, this line of unicorn shades includes 11 colours: peach, soft pink, pink, purple, blue, aqua, indigo, teal, burgundy, red, and tangerine. Since these colours are so pigmented, unfortunately the product is designed for bleached, light blonde, or highlighted hair. For you ladies and gents who have dark hair, sorry, this product is not recommended for that hair colour as you won’t get visible results.

L’Oreal asked me what shade I wanted to try out and I naturally went with pink since it’s my favourite shade. There are two pink colours in this line, soft pink and pink, and although I did ask for soft pink I’m happy they sent me the regular one since it gave me a range of pink shades once it started to fade.  But more on that later…

Application is super easy. The box includes a tube of the hair dye, a few plastic gloves and a brush in case you don’t want to fully dye your hair and instead opt for some highlights (or if you want to do an ombre using a few different shades). Since my hair is ombre, with the ends being way more blonde than the roots, I focused the colour on that part of my hair. There was no mixing or anything, just put the gloves on and apply the colour. I just squeezed the product into my hands and then started applying it to my locks using my hands.  In hindsight, I would section off the hair so the colour is applied evenly, but you live and learn.

Before and after

Colour stays on for 20 to 25 minutes depending on how blonde your hair is, then you rinse it out. What you’re left with is vibrant colour.

Once I dried and styled my hair I loved the shade of pink Colorista gave me. Best of all, it didn’t feel like I had something in my hair. I’ve previously reviewed the Garnier version, which is very similar and came out a few years ago, but that product left my hair feeling texturized, and then in turn made it very course and ratty. Although the colour was pretty, my hair felt dry and damaged.  Not Colorista though, my hair felt super smooth and healthy. It’s like this is permanent dye, not a product that gradually washes out of your hair.

After one wash, the colour did start to fade, however, the way it faded was really pretty. It went to a light pink colour, something more along the pastel trend that’s super popular right now.

final

Overall, I loved my experience using Colorista. Like I said though, you need to be blonde for it to work. The product impressed me from every angle; from the easy application to the colour to how it made my hair feel. If you ever wanted to try out a fun colour, I would definitely look into purchasing this, especially with festival season coming up, dyeing your locks a pastel shade is a no brainer.

Now the question is, which shade of Colorista do I want to try next? 😉

Which shade are you most excited to try?
