Fragrant + full: La Coupe Moroccan Rose Volume Loving haircare

I’ve had a lot of issues with my hair lately.

My colour looks drab (although it is looking a little better thanks to Schwarzkopf Professional’s BLONDME products), it’s dry and staticky (thanks Winnipeg winter), and my layers were long and overgrown (I actually just went for a haircut this week). I’m always on the hunt for the latest and greatest hair product, so when I received LaCoupe’s new Moroccan Rose Volume Loving collection, complete with a bottle of Henkell rose and a new hair towel turban, I was super excited to give this a go.

Okay, so cute bottles aside (seriously though, I’m such a sucker for packaging), LaCoupe’s new offering to their lineup consists of a shampoo, conditioner, and mousse. Like the name says, this haircare line is designed to add volume to your hair and make it smell delectable. I’m actually not really familiar with LaCoupe at all, in fact I totally thought it was a salon brand, but turns out you can buy it at Walmart Canada. Moroccan Rose is the first of four new silicone-free haircare lines in the brand’s eco-friendly Naturals Collection.

This particular line (which comes in giant 500 ml bottles, pretty good value for C$9.99 each) is supposed to strengthen fine and thinning hair, while giving you major volume, all in an environmental-friendly formula. Win-win, right?

Like I said, there are three products in the range, a shampoo, conditioner, and volumizing mousse. I couldn’t wait to actually try these out so I hopped in the shower and gave my hair a lather (wow Shayna, nice rhyming there). The shampoo and conditioner contain a blend of rose oil, which helps to add bounce and silkiness to dull hair. It also contains biotin and collagen to plump up your locks and it’s infused with coconut water and 100 per cent pure aloe leaf juice for moisture.

The mousse is a lightweight mousse that instantly thickens and lifts the hair. It also contains biotin and collagen, as well as a blend of natural moisturizers and exotic oils. Lastly, it has a thermal protective formula that will protect your hair against future heat damage.

So did these products work for me? The first time I tried them I liked how my hair looked and felt after showering, but when I woke up the next morning I found my roots looked a little greasy. This no doubt is because I actually put mousse on my hairbrush first, then brushed it in my hair. With this mousse it seems like you’re going to want to avoid applying it that way, and instead use your fingers to massage the product in your hair since it can leave you with greasy-looking hair if applied directly on top. The second time I tried it, I did just that, then blow dried my hair and applied rollers to get major volume (see photo below). As long as you don’t apply the mousse directly to the top of your head, it is a nice product.

The shampoo and conditioner also is quite nice. I like how it comes in a pump bottle so you aren’t wasting product. The smell is also divine. Is it my new favourite? No. But I do like how it gives you nice volume (you can definitely tell your hair has gotten a boost). Would I use this on a regular basis? No, but if I’m planning on doing a hairstyle with a lot of volume, then I would pull it out.

Overall this haircare range is okay, it does the trick for volumized hair. I wouldn’t use it on a daily basis since I like using something that’s good for my blonde, but if i want to do an at-home blowout, then I would reach for it.  Formula aside though, the packaging on this is just so cute that I think I would want to display it in my shower full time just to add some cuteness in there (again, I’m such a sucker for packaging).

Spring forward: Spring 2018 releases from Maybelline New York

Well it may still be full-fledged winter here (read: extreme cold warning), but in the beauty world it’s already spring.

Drugstore beauty brand Maybelline has been killing it lately with their releases, first came the Gigi Hadid collection, then Total Temptation, and now their beauty edit of spring 2018 goodies, which includes a plethora of products like a foundation, eyeshadow palettes, brow products, and more.

I couldn’t wait to dive into these, so since I was going out last Saturday I took the opportunity to get my hands dirty and put these products to use.

Starting with the brows, Maybelline has released a couple different items, including the Total Temptation Eyebrow Definer Pencil, which I have talked about previously (holy-grail, I love this product), but there’s also the Tattoo Studio Waterproof Brow Gel, which is a waterproof eyebrow gel that is supposed to last up to two days. The product, which is available in four shades and retails for C$14.99, features a sculpting tip and eyebrow spoolie brush that work together to create thicker-looking brows. The gel is quite pigmented, so you definitely need to be careful when applying this. Maybelline recommends to use the spoolie to create a defined look.

Does this last two days? No.  The first couple times I used it it came off with the rest of my makeup when I washed my face at night.  When I wore it last Saturday though, I did find that it stayed on one brow.  I also paired it with the Total Temptation Eyebrow Definer Pencil, so I’m not sure if that had anything to do with it.  It’s cool in theory, but if you use a pretty rigorous cleansing routine, which I do, I don’t see this lasting any longer than a day.

For the eyes, Maybelline has released a couple of new palettes as part of their The City kits collection. There’s two to choose from, The Pink Edge palette, which has a variety of pinks and purples to choose from, as well as the Urban Light palette, which feature pastels in a variety of different shades.  These palettes contain both eyeshadows (in shimmers, glitters, and mattes), as well as a blush and highlighter.

I love the packaging on these, as it’s similar to the Total Temptation Eyeshadow + Highlight palette they released last month.  The Urban Light palette has a holographic container, whereas the Pink Edge one has more of a millennial pink hue to it.  As for the colour range in here, they are okay.  They are pretty basic colours and shades I’ve seen before. Colour payoff is good, but considering that the brand has been putting out so many eyeshadow palettes lately, I wouldn’t say that these are a must.

They also released a new eyeshadow palette, The Burgundy Bar, a 12-shade palette that features 12 shades in shimmering and matte shades. The colours in this particular palette are a little more wearable and functional for both everyday and evening use, so out of these palettes, this one would be the one I would recommend the most. For the photos in this post, I actually used The Burgundy Bar, with a couple of the lighter shades from the other palettes thrown in for highlighting. All three retail for $17.99.

For the face, there is a new foundation out, the SuperStay 24hr Foundation, which I was really excited to try.  For the longest time, my favourite drugstore foundation was Maybelline Fit Me Matte and Poreless, so I’ve always been a fan of what they produce. This new foundation, available in 16 shades for $14.99 each, offers saturated colour pigments that provide long-lasting coverage. Best of all, this is a true high-coverage foundation that gives you flawless-looking skin that doesn’t dry it out.  Maybelline recommends that if you are unsure between two shades to go with the lighter one.  They sent me two, so I went with the lighter route and found it was a nice match for my skin (although a touch too tan), but I pulled it off anyways.

I know I just said that the Burt’s Bees Goodness Glows is my new fave drugstore foundation, and that still holds true because it makes your skin so glowly, but if you are looking for something with full-coverage, I would certainly check this one out.

To finish off the face, Maybelline has a new highlighter out, which is something you’ll definitely want to pick up. The Master Holographic Highlighter (C$12.99) gives you an iridescent finish that is so beautiful once applied. This contains prismatic pearl pigments that up your highlight game thanks to a holographic effect.  This is definitely something that is unlike anything else in my highlighter collection. The texture of the powder isn’t as creamy as other highlighters out there, but it’s certainly dazzling.

Finally, for the lips, we all know how much I love matte liquid lipstick.  Although they do have new shades available in the SuperStay Matte Ink line (which I love), they have also released the Color Sensational Powder Matte Lipstick, which is available in four shades (I’m wearing Carnal Brown, there is also a red, pink, and grey). This lipstick, which retails of C$9.99 each, offers two-times more mattifying powders than their Color Sensational Creamy Matte lipsticks.  The colour payoff in here is ultra matte, so I did like the finish on this.  These actually reminded me of the Inglot Matte Lipsticks, which came out a few years ago.

Overall, I really love everything that Maybelline has put out this season. I would skip the two City Kits, but everything else is very impressive.  I’ve just been loving what Maybelline has been doing lately, whether it’s been upping their packaging game, or coming out with innovative products, I would definitely take a look at what they have in store for you this season.

Spring fresh: Spring skincare and makeup items from Mary Kay Cosmetics

Mary Kay has been killing it with their products lately.

The direct-to-consumer beauty brand has released a bevvy of new products for spring 2018 and I couldn’t help but get a little excited because there are some major all-stars in here. Think hydrated skin, beautiful eyeshadows, and fluffy brushes.

Okay, so first up is the most exciting item, a six-piece brush set that features five multi-tasking brushes and a matching black carrying case. These brushes are feathery-soft and feature synthetic bristles and made to perform a variety of different uses.  There’s a cheek brush, an all-over powder brush, an all-over eyeshadow brush, an eye smudger brush, and an eye crease brush.  The variety that MK chose to include in here was quite stellar, the only thing I would swap out would be that “eye crease” brush, which is a thicker angled brush that I personally would not use in my crease as I prefer a fluffy dome-shaped one instead. But to each their own I guess…

The quality on the brushes in here is quite outstanding and you can truly use them a variety of different ways. For instance, the all-over powder can easily double as a blush; the cheek can be used for blush, contour, or even foundation,, and the eyeshadow brushes, well, they can be used for a variety of different functions for eyeshadows.

I believe this retails for $75 USD, not sure on the Canadian pricing, but for five good-quality brushes and a nice case to house them (and others), I think it’s a good deal. These are seriously so soft and luxurious that you’ll be keeping these for years to come (just remember to clean them often!).

Looking for something to use those new brushes with? Mary Kay has released a couple new limited edition Mineral Eye Colour Quads in the colours Berry Haute and Shades of Jade.

Like their other eyeshadow sets, these are magnetic so you place them in a Z Palette for storage (or buy a case from Mary Kay directly).  These are quite small, but feature four complementary shades to create a variety of different looks.  Both of them are perfect for spring and even if you don’t want to do a strictly purple or green look, you can easily still use these for something a little more natural (use the cream on the lids with the darker shades in the crease).

I tried out the purple one and the colour payoff was quite nice.  Neither palette really struck me as something that you have to pick up (unlike the brush set), but these are nice. I also like the fact that they are magnetic since I have a very lonely-looking Z Palette that needs to be filled.

Now onto skincare… Since this is a spring collection, it is still technically winter and I don’t know where you’re from, but here in Winnipeg winter means cold and dry. I’ve been slathering myself in lotion every night so these new goodies from Mary Kay have been coming in handy.

New to the Satin Body family is the Satin Body collection, which features the Satin Body Revitalizing Shea Scrub, the Satin Body Indulgent Shea Wash, the Satin Body Silkening Shea Lotion, and the limited edition Satin Body Whipped Shea Creme, all in a White Tea and Citrus fragrance and infused with shea butter.

Although it’s never really mattered to me much before, but I do enjoy using the same line from body wash to moisturizer, so I’ve really been enjoying these products. I’m not that crazy on the scent, but the everything is very luxurious and leaving my skin feeling nice and moisturized thanks to that added shea butter. Although a scrub is good to have for sloughing away dead skin cells, I would highly recommend picking up the body wash and a whipped shea cream, since the latter is limited edition, and the former is a body wash and who doesn’t need a luxurious body wash?

Mary Kay Cosmetics skincare

Since Mary Kay products are traditionally more expansive than let’s say, Dove, these are definitely a treat and would great as a treat to yourself or as a gift. There are so many good lotions, scrubs, and body washes nowadays, that I wouldn’t say you absolutely have to pick these up, but if you want to treat yo’ self, go ahead.

Out of everything Mary Kay has to offer for spring, I still stand by the brush set as the one item that I would highly recommend.  The quality of those brushes is phenomenal and who doesn’t need more brushes in their life? If don’t matter how good the makeup is, if you don’t have the proper tools to apply it, you’re wasting your time.

Are you excited for Mary Kay’s spring 2018 collection?
