The new-new: CoverGirl rebrands and launches new products

Easy, breezy.. not anymore.

I’ve mentioned about this before on here, but a couple years ago CoverGirl got sold from P&G to Coty and along with it came a makeover for the brand. You may have noticed that their packaging got a revamp, the font is a little different, there are more CoverGirls on the docket (including the beauty brand’s first ever male spokesperson, James Charles).  Also new is their “I Am What I Makeup” slogan.

I was super fortunate to attend CoverGirl’s relaunch party in Toronto last week where we got to play around with their new Tru Blend Matte Made foundation, sip on cocktails, take some selfies, and learn all about the rebrand. Since that famed “Easy, Breezy, Beautiful” slogan is not so easy breezy for all, Covergirl executive Ukonwa Ojo mentioned to the crowd that people no longer strive for a singular standard of beauty, but use makeup as a tool for self-expression and personal transformation. Thus, “I am what I makeup” better encapsulates the vision of the brand going forward, in that it’s positive, creative, and inclusive.

I do love the new slogan, but I do have to admit that the OG is so classic that it’s going to take a while for me to associate this new one with the drugstore beauty brand. But hey, growth is good.

Anyways, onto the new packaging and products.  Their new branding has slowly been making its way onto store shelves and when I got to my hotel room in Toronto I was greeted with a gift bag of new stuff.  In the bag was their new Lash Blast Flourish mascara (which I had previously reviewed), their TruNaked Peach Punch eyeshadow palette (which smells like peaches FYI), the TruBlend Base Business Pore Minimizing primer (also comes in Illuminating, Skin Smoothing, and Color Neutralizing), a Melting Pout Matte Liquid Lipstick, the Get In Line Liquid Eyeliner, a gel pot liner, the Tru Blend It’s Lit Concealer, and a couple of the Tru Blend Matte Made foundations.

Along with promoting the new rebrand, the star of the show was definitely their new foundation. I am already a fan of the original Tru Blend so I was excited to try out the Matte Made version.

This new foundation is offered up in 40 shades, categorized by Light, Medium, Tan, and Deep. The shade range on this line is truly phenomenal as Covergirl actually added 26 new shades to the family. The formula is medium-to-full coverage and like the name suggests, gives you a matte appearance (they also claim that it doesn’t transfer on white, so I’m excited to take the test).

We were shade matched at the event and I walked away with M30, which to be honest, matched my self-tanned skin perfectly, but wouldn’t really suit me for how my skin actually looks (M10 would be the closest of the three pictured below).  Typically the shade range on drugstore foundations aren’t as high as 40 colours, so this is huge news that CoverGirl came out with these as you will certainly be able to find a colour to match your skin tone. I’m still currently testing these and plan on doing a more thorough review coming soon, but so far I am really impressed with how well this foundation performs and holds up.

In the photo above I’m wearing the new peach eyeshadow palette, the gel pot liner, the primer, the foundation, and the concealer. I absolutely love everything, however, I do wish that the gel pot liner went on more pigmented. I found I had to go over the line a few times as I like my line to look really black.

I’ve always been a huge fan of CoverGirl, so although it did take some getting used to when I saw their new logo, I’m loving the direction that the brand is taking. I’ve mentioned it before, but prior to me becoming a blogger, I always associated the brand with being “mom makeup”. My thoughts on this have definitely changed over the years, and now with the revamp, they are definitely including everyone, no matter the age, gender, or ethnicity. Kudos CoverGirl, keep doing what you’re doing!

What are your thoughts on the CoverGirl rebrand and new slogan?

Please note, I received this product for review. All opinions are my own.

Drunk on good skin: Drunk Elephant skincare

Although I do get a lot of skincare products, sometimes I hear so much hype that I have to try something out myself and see what it’s all about. Such is the case with Drunk Elephant skincare.

You may have seen their stuff in your local Sephora, but this Houston, Texas-based brand is committed to using only clean ingredients that either directly benefit the skin’s health, or support the integrity and effectiveness of their formulations. They choose their ingredients based on its safety and bio-compatibility and they don’t include any silicones, chemical screens, sensitizing colorants/perfumes, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), essential oils, or drying ingredients. What you get is really good skincare that is appropriate for every skintype.

Since I have a pretty lengthy skincare routine I wanted to get the full effect of the products and chose to use one of the cleansers, a serum, a moisturizer, and an eyecream.

Drunk Elephant skincare products

I start my routine with their Beste No.9 Jelly Cleanser (C$42), which is a jelly cleanser that removes makeup, excess oil, pollution, and other gross stuff from the day (or night). For nighttime I pair this with my FOREO Luna 2 to get a deep clean, and for the day I just use it with my bare hands. I find it does a nice job of washing my face, but definitely prefer it with a cleanser brush as it washes the skin much more thoroughly. It is very gentle, but doesn’t lather much, which to me, I’m a big fan of a little lather, but as long as it’s doing a good job, that factor doesn’t make or break how much I enjoy a cleanser. I also want to note that since it is a jelly, I do have to be careful that it doesn’t slip out of my hands into the sink, thus wasting product.

After I’m done cleansing, I use my usual toner, then go in with the Shaba Complex Eye Serum (C$72). Drunk Elephant has a couple different eye serums, but this one is formulated to take on major signs of aging around and under the eyes, such as fine lines, wrinkles, and sun damage. It contents potent doses of black tea ferment and copper peptides that work together to support a smoother, younger appearance, as well as slow down the signs of aging. I love the packaging on this since you twist the top for the dispenser part to appear (same with their C-Tango Multivitamin Eye Cream). Although they call this a serum, it does look like a cream and a little goes a long way. The formula is nice and gentle and absorbs quickly into the skin. I don’t have any real problems with my undereyes (unless I smile, fine lines appear). I haven’t really noticed a difference with this, but that’s a good thing as I haven’t noticed my eye area getting worse. This keeps my skin nice and calm (no puffiness here), and my eyes look youthful and alert.

Drunk Elephant Virgin Maracuja oil

Next up is their Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil (C$90), which I apply at night before my moisturizer. This oil is high in antioxidants and rich in Omegas 6 and 9 to moisturize, rejuvenate, and nourish skin. It actually comes straight from the marula fruit, so it remains in its purest form. After applying a drop or two, skin feels moisturized, rejuvenated, fresh, and nourished. Since this is an oil, I only apply this at night since I found my makeup would tend to slide throughout the day (although DE does recommend it for day and night, it just didn’t work for daytime use for me). By the time morning comes, this product is fully absorbed into my skin and my face feels ready for the day ahead.

Finally, my last step is using the Protini Polypeptide Cream (C$84) at night. This is a protein shake for your face as it combines an array of signal peptides, growth factors, supportive amino acids, and pygmy waterlily for improvement in your skin’s tone, texture, and firmness. Drunk Elephant says that this formula will give you younger, revived-looking skin and lines, wrinkles, and signs of sun damage appear reduced. I only use this at night, however, you can definitely use it during the day as well (I have too much skincare to use so I switch it up during the day). The packaging on this is cool since you press the top down for the product to appear. The cream feels incredibly moisturizing and refreshing on the skin. I also find that a little goes a long way since it tends to spread out nicely.

The combination of these products were a lifesaver when I got back from New York City last month. For some reason when I was out there my skin felt dry and bumpy, so when I got back I really put a lot of time and effort into getting it back to tip-top shape. After a few days of using these products, my skin was feeling more revived and energized, and the gross texture soon went away.

Drunk Elephant Shaba Eye Complex and Protini moisturizer

Aside from how well the products work, I do have to say that I love the packaging. Some of these containers are super unique and the fun colours and branding totally pop in my medicine cabinet. Of course, if you are investing money into your skincare routine, the packaging shouldn’t be a selling factor, but I’m a sucker for bright colours and cool things, so I’m totally digging it.

When it comes to skincare, the price will usually set you back, which is the case with these products (although they do offer smaller versions for less money than what I mentioned in this post). I’ve tried a lot of products from a lot of brands, but so far I’ve really been enjoying what Drunk Elephant has to offer up. I also like how their products are made in the United States, not mass produced in some Asian factory (not that there’s anything wrong with that, as we all know, Korean beauty is huge), but since they really seem to be about their philosophy, it’s nice to see that they don’t compromise on ingredients.

Next time you’re in Sephora and looking for some new skincare items, I would definitely recommend giving them a look. The best part about Sephora is that they will give you samples if you ask, so if you don’t want to invest in a C$84 moisturizer just yet, you can ask to try it out first.

Have you tried Drunk Elephant skincare? What are your favourite items?

Pick a palette: Tarte Tartelette palettes

Tarte is one of those brands that consistently just does it right every time.

I’ve been using the Tartlette In Bloom eyeshadow palette (C$60) consistency since I got it a couple years ago. The bestselling palette contains 12 shadows, everything from brightening matte colours to micro shimmer shades. There’s soft nudes, shimmery coppers, browns, you name it. Since there are nine mattes and three shimmers in here, you get the perfect assortment of colours and formulas, which make this one an all-star product. In fact, it’s usually the palette I reach for the most when it comes to travelling. The shade range coupled with the fact that it’s nice and slim (with a good-sized mirror), makes it super handy to toss in your makeup bag for that dream vacation.

Since I love the In Bloom palette so much I was so excited to receive the other two palettes in the Tartelette family, the Amazonian Clay Matte Palette, and the Toasted Eyeshadow Palette (both C$60 each).

The original Tartelette Amazonian Clay Matte Palette contains 12 matte eyeshadows in cool and warm tones. Like In Bloom, there are 12 shades in here, organized into rows which let you create three easy looks or mix and match to create a custom eyeshadow look. Although it’s always good to have a selection of different formulas in your collection, I do feel like everyone should have a strictly matte one in their collection since the matte formula is so integral in an eyeshadow look. This particular palette is full of basic colours that can create any eye look. Since these palettes use their Amazonian Clay eyeshadows, each shade is infused with vitamin E and mineral pigments.

Finally, for the newest one the bunch, Toasted came out last year I believe and features 12 all-new warm shades. This one leans more towards oranges, browns, and coppers, but is the perfect going-out palette. Like the other two Tartelette palettes, each row is organized into three different looks and if you’re into smoky, then you need to pick this up. There are seven mattes and five shimmers in here, making it easy to do that person crimson smoky eye that will sure to have anyone commenting on your eye colour (I had so many people mention how blue my eyes are when I wore this). As someone who regularly wears a shimmery cream on my lid, a burnt orange in my crease as the transition, and a matte brown in my crease, this one is right up my alley. I’m wearing this palette in the photo below.

All three Tartelette palettes feature a creamy formula that glides on the lids and really it just comes down to what you’re going to be using the palettes for. In Bloom is the perfect everyday palette, Toasted is the party palette, and the original Tartelette is great to have in your collection since it’s all matte. I’m kinda obsessed with all three, so I don’t really have a favourite (although again, I have been using In Bloom for years and it’s still one of my absolute faves out of every palette I own).

I know that it’s tough choosing which palette is right for you (out of every brand there is on the market), but if you’re in the market for a new shadow palette, then definitely look at the Tartelette palettes, you will not be disappointed.
