Customizable colour: Mary Kay Cosmetics Chromafusion makeup

Ever wanted to create your own eyeshadow palette?  How about a totally curated face palette?  Well, now you can with a new release by Mary Kay Cosmetics.

Officially launched as of November 2018, Mary Kay Cosmetics came out with a brand-new formula for their eyeshadows, blushes, highlighters, and bronzers.  Called Chromafusion, this technology delivers 12-hour wear and incredibly pigmented colour.

The brand was amazing and actually sent me all the shades before it officially launched to the public and between trying it out and writing all the holiday posts, I finally got around to fully playing with it and writing about it.

MAry Kay Chromafusion eyeshadows Mary Kay Chromafusion palettes

The largest release is definitely the eyeshadows, which are available in 33 shades (16 of which are matte).  These shadows deliver intense colour payoff and the advanced hybrid technique wraps the finely-milled premium pigments in a layer of cream to amplify colour. What you’re left with is a smooth eyeshadow that packs a punch and blends out beautifully (while feeling lightweight).   These shadows (C$9 each) are magnetized, so you will need a pro palette (Mary Kay sells them for C$28 for the large and C$17 for the small).  The colour range varies from nudes to pink tones, purple tones, blues, and darks.

I did find these shadows to apply beautifully. They aren’t the creamiest ones I’ve tried, but sometimes too creamy can be a bad thing.  I think the pigmentation, colour payoff, and longevity of the shadows are worth the hype and I like how you can totally customize how you want your palette to look.

Mary Kay Cosmetics Chromafusion blushes and eyeshadows

For the face, Mary Kay has released 10 Chromafusion blushes (C$15 each) as well, suitable for just about any skin tone.  I gravitate more towards the light and mauve pinks, however, there is a wide variety of shades to choose from. I do find the colour payoff on these to be really good since a little goes a long way and it doesn’t look like you’re wearing blush. The colour melts into the skin and leaves you with a beautiful natural finish.

For bronzers (C$15 each), there are only two to choose from (although some of the blushes are on the darker side and could totally pass off as a bronzer).  Available in Latte (light/medium) and Cocoa (medium/dark), these are nice to help you achieve that perfect contour.

Swatches of Mary Kay Chromafusion eye and cheek products

To finish up the face, there are two highlighters (C$15 each), Glazed and Honey Glow.  Both are a shimmery highlighter that help add that extra glow to your skin.  I do find these highlighters to be on the darker side. I wish they released a more silver-toned one, but I have made Glazed work nicely with my complexion. These are nice, but I do have better highlighters in my collection.

All the face products have the same consistency as the eyeshadows in that they deliver pigmented lightweight colour that lasts all day. I do really like this collection and love the colour range that the brand came out with for these. I find Mary Kay shadows in general to be hit or miss. I’ve tried some palettes that I’ve loved and others that did nothing for me. These work well and I’ve found that I’ve been reaching for my large palette a lot lately since it really does hold a lot of these Chromafusion items (I got all the shadows in here, as well as two blushes, a bronzer and a highlighter).

If you are a Mary Kay fan already, I would definitely try these out. I think the pricing is quite affordable as well and love how you can choose the colours you know you want and will use.

Radiant skin: Rodan + Fields Radiant Defense Perfecting Liquid Broad Spectrum SPF 30

When it comes to lazy days but I still wanna wear makeup, I always reach for a tinted moisturizer or CC/BB cream. These are so easy to wear since they provide skincare benefits and also give you coverage on your skin, blurring out redness and impurities.

You guys know I love IT Cosmetics’ CC Cream and wear it on the regular, but am always open to trying out new products along the similar line. When I got in Rodan + Fields’ new Radiant Defense Perfecting Liquid Broad Spectrum SPF 30, I was instantly intrigued since I’ve heard so many amazing things about R+F and I love a great tinted moisturizer.

Rodan + Fields

The Radiant Defense Perfecting Liquid Broad Spectrum SPF 30 (C$76) is available in six different shades and combines skincare benefits with complexion-perfecting results.

R+F says that this is the final step in your skincare routine as it perfects skin after your routine (plus gives you that SPF for when you’re out and about). This lightweight oil-free formula contains R+F’s proprietary RD3 Complex, which provides three forms of defence: environmental, barrier, and photo.  It also helps defend against environmental aggressors, repair’s skin’s moisture barrier, and protects against UVA and UVB rays.

Since I have pretty good skin already, I did find that one coat was good enough to give me the coverage I was looking for. It is lightweight and I wouldn’t call it a full coverage, but it gives me just enough that my face looks flawless with one application. You can also build it up for more flawless skin.

Rodan + Fields Radiant Defense Perfecting Liquid Broad Spectrum SPF 30 and brush
Rodan and Fields Radiant Defense Liquid Brush

I have the shade beige, which is the second-lightest shade in the range. I also have the Radiant Defense Liquid Brush (C$44) that is the perfect partner to apply this with (and probably one of the best foundation brushes I have ever used). First I shake the product up then squeeze it on the brush head before buffing it into my skin. I find this shade to match perfectly with my skin and the product absorbs in nicely, leaving me with a finish that I’m completely loving.

Before and after using the Rodan + Fields Radiant Defense Perfecting Liquid Broad Spectrum SPF 30

As you can see in the swatches, it doesn’t completely mute out the redness in my face, but it dulls it and blurs it out, leaving me with a finish that is natural and perfect for everyday wear. If you aren’t a huge makeup fan, then I think you’ll absolutely love this as it touches up any imperfections on your skin and gives you a radiant finish (not to mention all those skincare benefits!).  It’s also perfect for that beach vacation you have planned at the end of the month since it’s light on the skin and gives you sun coverage with the built-in SPF 30.

This was my first foray into Rodan + Fields and I’ve only ever heard amazing things about their skincare products. I can definitely see what the hype is all about and am looking forward to exploring their other items in the line.

Keep a lookout on my Instagram because I’ll be launching a giveaway soon to give away a shade of this product and the brush to one lucky Canadian winner!

Fresh locks: Hair products you need to start 2019

What are your New Year’s beauty resolutions? Maybe it’s taking better care of your skin, only using clean beauty products, a mask a week, or maintaining healthy hair, although we are a week in, it’s not too late to start making your beauty goals for 2019.

I have a million hair products already but have really been loving a few that have been on heavy rotation lately. Although I was using these at the end of 2018 as well, here at my top choices to start off your 2019.

Design Me Dry Shampoo

Design.Me Quickie Me Dry Shampoo

I’m a huge fan of Design.Me, so when I saw they released a dry shampoo last year, I jumped all over it.

Available in three formulas (dry shampoo for light and blonde tones; dry shampoo for dark and brunette tones; and dry shampoo mousse), this dry shampoo contains a rice starch formula that absorbs, lifts, and styles hair without actually using water.

I try out a lot of dry shampoos and although the stuff it a necessity for every haircare closet, I find that my hair tends to feel grittier when I use the stuff. This one will still leave your hair looking and feeling fresh thanks to the rice starch which absorbs oils and gives you volume. It also has cetrimonium chloride and disiloxane to condition hair and maintain the natural look of your hair tone.

The dry shampoos work like how you are used to, whereas the mousse is really cool to switch up the routine.  In fact, I was kinda impressed with how much I liked this and how it helped combat the look of grease. Best of all, none of the dry shampoos leave that dreaded white film on your hair. They blend in naturally, like there’s nothing even in there.

Joico Blonde Life products

Joico Blonde Life Brilliant Glow Brightening Oil

Since I have blonde hair and blonde extensions, I always need to apply some sort of colour enhancer to keep my hair looking fresh and bright. Lately, for my serum, I’ve been reaching for the Joico Blonde Life Brilliant Glow Brightening Oil (C$27.65), which adds radiance to my hair, as well as nourishing and protecting it.

Add a couple drops to damp hair to brighten up your blonde, as well as tame frizz.  After a blow-dry (or air dry) my hair feels soft and hydrated. It also provides 87 per cent less combing breakage.

Joico Blonde Life Brilliant Tone Violet Smoothing Foam

Blondes know that a good purple shampoo will help revitalize tone in hair, so why not add a little purple to your styling products as well?

The Joico Blonde Life Brilliant Tone Violet Smoothing Foam (C$25.95) helps tackle brass and leaves hair looking and feeling smooth, soft, and bouncy. Just like a mousse, apply a dollop to your hands and then work it into your hair to instantly tone blonde hair and add bounce and movement.  Best of all, it doesn’t make your hair look or feel greasy or weigh it down. Just apply it before your blow out and after you’re left with incredibly smooth and polished hair.

Cake Wavemaker

Cake The Wavemaker Sugar-Infused Texturing Beach Spray

I’ve actually had this product for a while, but still adore its sugary scent.  Cake’s The Wavemaker (C$14.99) is a texturizing spray that smells like candy.  Typically, texturizing sprays have salt in them, but this one uses sugar, which is a natural humectant which helps preserve moisture. In addition to sugar, this spray also includes aloe vera to smooth and nourish hair, as well as orange peel and tangerine oils to leave hair feeling soft.  What you’re left with is a lightweight formula that helps create that envious beachy waves (without feeling sticky might I add).

I typically use anywhere from three to five different styling products when I wash my hair and these have been in heavy rotation a lot lately.  I know that may seem like a lot, but every product has a different purpose and I love cocktailing products for the best hair treatment I can get.
