Playing around: Mary Kay At Play pencils for colour correction and contouring

I was never really into colour correcting until recently.

Lately, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve started to notice that my skin’s red undertones have been coming through in certain areas of my face. This includes around my eye area, my nose, and a little on my cheeks. Although I don’t colour correct that often, I will pull out my favourite green cream product to help reduce any rosiness on my face if I’m doing my makeup for a night out. Because of this, I was super pumped to receive Mary Kay Cosmetics’ new Mary Kay At Play Makeup Sticks.

These crayons (C$17 each) are available in four different formulas for colour correcting, highlighting, and contouring.  There’s two contouring sticks (Get Sculpted 1 and Get Sculpted 2), a highlighting stick in Rosy Glow, a colour correcting stick in Wipe Out Redness (the green one), and a colour correcting stick in Ditch Dullness (the purple).

I’ve chatted about colour correcting and contouring/highlighting on here before, but it’s a simple method to help cancel out any imperfections and sculpt the face. The colour correcting sticks are used to help tone out red and dull areas on the face.  This can include blemishes, rosy cheeks, or redness around the nose (the green one), and help brighten and wake up your face (the purple one).

For contouring, the most important thing to remember if you are using a cream contour, is that you apply this over your liquid foundation (make sure you don’t set it with a powder before using this). For a subtle contour, select a shade that is one or two shades darker than your foundation; for something more defined, choose a shade that is three shades darker than your foundation, and don’t forget to blend it all in! For the photo below, I actually did everything underneath my foundation and then used a damp sponge to blend it.

I really like these and find them super handy. The only thing I would have done differently with this collection is swap out the rosy highlight for one that was more champagne toned, as I find that to be a little more suitable for all skin tones.

At C$17 a pop, I think Mary Kay priced these affordably so you can just pick and choose which crayons you need in your collection. I feel like most people have some sort of redness on their face, so I highly recommend picking up the Wipe Out Redness for sure.

Do you colour correct or cream contour/highlight?
