Signature shape: Kat Von D Beauty brow products

As I mentioned in my Mary Kay brow post last week, I’m always on the hunt for great brow products.

Having been a huge fan of Kat Von D Beauty, I was thrilled to get in some of their brow products. Although I have tried a lot of items from the brand, I’ve never tried anything from their brow line (I don’t think.. honestly, with so many products coming in everyday it’s hard to keep track of what I’ve tried and what I haven’t).

Anyways, the brand sent over one of their Signature Brow Precision Pencil in the colour taupe, as well as the matching Brow Struck Dimension Powder.  Although I do use powders on my brows, I do prefer a pencil, mostly because it allows me to create and sculpt the brow more precisely than a powder will do.  Sometimes though, if I have time, I will go in with both if I feel like a really bold brow.

Kat Von D Brow Products Kat Von D Signature Brow Pencil

The Signature Brow Precision Pencil is available in seven shades, for blonde hair to black, and is billed as a long-wear waterproof pencil.  This is a retractable pencil with a spoolie on the other end, and the actual product is an oval shape, so it really allows you to get in there and precisely map out your brows. I like the shape of this since you can use the tip to create those faux hairs and then use it straight on for shading them in.

I received the colour taupe in this, which considering that it isn’t my right shade (this is the lightest one), it actually wasn’t that bad with my brow hairs. I would normally go for dark brown since my brows are so dark, but I found taupe worked well for me since you want to create a shadow effect, not overpower the brows with too much colour.

Kat Von D says that this pencil is break-resistant, however, the first time I used it it snapped off, so it definitely did not fit that claim.  I think it’s okay pencil, I wish it were a tad creamier to use, as I found it to be very light. But again, taupe is not my colour, so I think that would be part of the issue. I’m sure my opinion would be different with a shade that is darker and matches my hair more properly.

Kat Von D Brow Struck Dimension Powder

Moving on to the Brow Struck Dimension Powder (C$24), also available in seven shades, this long-wear waterproof brow powder is infused with light-catching 3D pigments to create a natural brow effect. If you like using a powder product for your brows, this one comes in the chicest compact (with a mirror) and helps you fill in your brows and even out the shape. The formula in this is unique as it contains a primer and a powder formula to enhance the grip and wear time.  Kat Von D Beauty says this lasts for up to 12 hours on the brows.

Again, I got the colour taupe in this, which I used with the pencil. When used together, they seemed to make my brows look natural and definitely believable (see picture below). When you first look at the product itself, it looks like there is a hint shimmer in there, which would be fine for an eyeshadow, but I thought it was a bit strange for a brow product. It ended up working out though since you don’t actually see the shimmer once it’s applied.

If you’re looking for soft brows and nothing too intense, then I would look into picking this up.  I didn’t find it to be too pigmented, but again, taupe is definitely not my shade.  I think that the dark brown colour would be much more suited to my brows.  With that being said, I do like the combination of the pencil and the powder though. Truthfully, if you could only buy one, I would go with the pencil. It’s just easier, but you don’t need an extra tool (you need an angled eyebrow/eyeliner brush with the powder).

Before and after using Kat Von D products

So final thoughts on the Kat Von D Beauty brow products? They do the trick, but I’ve used better. You guys know I love the Maybelline Total Temptation Brow Definer Pencil, and I’ve been using the Mary Kay pencil a lot lately as well (although that one does not come with a spoolie). I think the price point is fair on both of these, just make sure you pick up the right shade ;).

What’s your favourite brow product?

Please note, I received this product from PR. All opinions are my own.
