Spring forward: Spring 2018 releases from Maybelline New York

Well it may still be full-fledged winter here (read: extreme cold warning), but in the beauty world it’s already spring.

Drugstore beauty brand Maybelline has been killing it lately with their releases, first came the Gigi Hadid collection, then Total Temptation, and now their beauty edit of spring 2018 goodies, which includes a plethora of products like a foundation, eyeshadow palettes, brow products, and more.

I couldn’t wait to dive into these, so since I was going out last Saturday I took the opportunity to get my hands dirty and put these products to use.

Starting with the brows, Maybelline has released a couple different items, including the Total Temptation Eyebrow Definer Pencil, which I have talked about previously (holy-grail, I love this product), but there’s also the Tattoo Studio Waterproof Brow Gel, which is a waterproof eyebrow gel that is supposed to last up to two days. The product, which is available in four shades and retails for C$14.99, features a sculpting tip and eyebrow spoolie brush that work together to create thicker-looking brows. The gel is quite pigmented, so you definitely need to be careful when applying this. Maybelline recommends to use the spoolie to create a defined look.

Does this last two days? No.  The first couple times I used it it came off with the rest of my makeup when I washed my face at night.  When I wore it last Saturday though, I did find that it stayed on one brow.  I also paired it with the Total Temptation Eyebrow Definer Pencil, so I’m not sure if that had anything to do with it.  It’s cool in theory, but if you use a pretty rigorous cleansing routine, which I do, I don’t see this lasting any longer than a day.

For the eyes, Maybelline has released a couple of new palettes as part of their The City kits collection. There’s two to choose from, The Pink Edge palette, which has a variety of pinks and purples to choose from, as well as the Urban Light palette, which feature pastels in a variety of different shades.  These palettes contain both eyeshadows (in shimmers, glitters, and mattes), as well as a blush and highlighter.

I love the packaging on these, as it’s similar to the Total Temptation Eyeshadow + Highlight palette they released last month.  The Urban Light palette has a holographic container, whereas the Pink Edge one has more of a millennial pink hue to it.  As for the colour range in here, they are okay.  They are pretty basic colours and shades I’ve seen before. Colour payoff is good, but considering that the brand has been putting out so many eyeshadow palettes lately, I wouldn’t say that these are a must.

They also released a new eyeshadow palette, The Burgundy Bar, a 12-shade palette that features 12 shades in shimmering and matte shades. The colours in this particular palette are a little more wearable and functional for both everyday and evening use, so out of these palettes, this one would be the one I would recommend the most. For the photos in this post, I actually used The Burgundy Bar, with a couple of the lighter shades from the other palettes thrown in for highlighting. All three retail for $17.99.

For the face, there is a new foundation out, the SuperStay 24hr Foundation, which I was really excited to try.  For the longest time, my favourite drugstore foundation was Maybelline Fit Me Matte and Poreless, so I’ve always been a fan of what they produce. This new foundation, available in 16 shades for $14.99 each, offers saturated colour pigments that provide long-lasting coverage. Best of all, this is a true high-coverage foundation that gives you flawless-looking skin that doesn’t dry it out.  Maybelline recommends that if you are unsure between two shades to go with the lighter one.  They sent me two, so I went with the lighter route and found it was a nice match for my skin (although a touch too tan), but I pulled it off anyways.

I know I just said that the Burt’s Bees Goodness Glows is my new fave drugstore foundation, and that still holds true because it makes your skin so glowly, but if you are looking for something with full-coverage, I would certainly check this one out.

To finish off the face, Maybelline has a new highlighter out, which is something you’ll definitely want to pick up. The Master Holographic Highlighter (C$12.99) gives you an iridescent finish that is so beautiful once applied. This contains prismatic pearl pigments that up your highlight game thanks to a holographic effect.  This is definitely something that is unlike anything else in my highlighter collection. The texture of the powder isn’t as creamy as other highlighters out there, but it’s certainly dazzling.

Finally, for the lips, we all know how much I love matte liquid lipstick.  Although they do have new shades available in the SuperStay Matte Ink line (which I love), they have also released the Color Sensational Powder Matte Lipstick, which is available in four shades (I’m wearing Carnal Brown, there is also a red, pink, and grey). This lipstick, which retails of C$9.99 each, offers two-times more mattifying powders than their Color Sensational Creamy Matte lipsticks.  The colour payoff in here is ultra matte, so I did like the finish on this.  These actually reminded me of the Inglot Matte Lipsticks, which came out a few years ago.

Overall, I really love everything that Maybelline has put out this season. I would skip the two City Kits, but everything else is very impressive.  I’ve just been loving what Maybelline has been doing lately, whether it’s been upping their packaging game, or coming out with innovative products, I would definitely take a look at what they have in store for you this season.
